Had this unit for over a year. While it played most things fine - over the last year I have seen this unit start to have issues with regular use. The unit now makes loud clicks on some discs, skips and locks up on some dl discs, and now locks up on some xvid files. Could be a dirty lens...not sure.

This unit is fine for occasional use but I couldn't recommend it for heavy use - the build quality seems poor - especially the tray mechanism. It was very inexpensive and I can't really complain. I recently replaced it with the OPPO DV-980H and am pretty happy with that.

LG LDA-530 bought at Futureshop. Had it for 10 months.

Like other reports, I find this is generally a good player and will play almost anything you throw at it. I had the Phillips DVP-642 for the year prior, and the LG picture seems sharper.

However....like the report from A.Q. (Tony) King below, I have found that the LG does have problems with some files. I too once had to do a cold reboot (pull power cord) after a severe lockup. I have also noticed a slow degradation of playback of home made DVDs. Stuttering movie playback, flawed transitions between jpg pictures, etc. I can see these difference over time because I play some of the same DVDs for my kid every few months. The DVD layer is degrading you say? Well, I doubt it as the DVD media is less than a year old, and this same problem happens with other DVD media regardless of heritage. I used generic media for a while, then switched over fully to T Yuden discs. So again, I doubt the discs themselves are degrading. Final evidence...these problem DVDs still play fine in the PC.

It might be a 'dust on the lens' thing for the LG LDA-530, so that is my next effort at fixing this problem before calling LG.

IMPORTANT !!!!

I've tried to play a multisessions DVD+R with 2 sessions but it only saw the first. I burned the dvd with my LG 4167b dvd burner. I already had problem with DVD+R on this burner but I can see the 2nd session with the 4167b. So I'm not sure if the lda-530 or the 4167b is the problem. I don't have any problems with DVD+RW, DVD-R or CD-R multi-sessions.

To make your LG DVD Player region free just click on this link (or copy paste it in the browser) http://www.area450.co.uk/images/LG5000.zip and unzip the zipped file and read the "readme" file.

That's it ! ! !

A friend of mine recently bought an LDA530 from FutureShop.
I lent them a divx video (on a DVD), consisting of about 10 AVIs, each about 400Meg.
I could play it very well on my PC, and so could several friends, except that one of the files had a bad spot or two - a corrupted DIVX which cause the video to flutter a bit.
When the LGA530 hit this spot on the AVI, it locked up. Completely. Couldn't turn it off, couldn't eject the disk. The only thing we could do is pull the powercord. (i.e. a cold re-boot)
As well, a CD with some DIVX AVIs on it played very well on several PCs, but the LG just stuttered along, freezing frames for several seconds and jumping forward etc... Totally unacceptable.

Anyone have similar problems or comments on these DIVX problems?
Is there some kind of firmware upgrade available that I can easily flash?
I was thinking of buying the LDA530, but since this happened, no way!
And I've cautioned all my friends against buying it.

About the region free code, I wrote the wrong code for the remote.

It is "314159"
So it goes like this:

Simple way to play free region code. ( Just using your remote no CD to insert!)

1.Turn on without disk inside. ( from your DVD player)
2.push "pause" on your remote
3.push in "314159" on your remote
4.push in "o" for all regions, "1" for US and Canada on your remote.
5.push in "pause" again on your remote.
6. Turn off and on. (From your dvd player)
you are done! :) Have fun with your dvd player!

Very poor playback with memorex DVD+R DL iffy with Verbatim DVD+R DL, has problems with most of my DVD+R DVD. Plays commercial DVDs OK nice picture. Customer serivce was just plain bad, they really couldnt care less that it wont play any DVD+R DL Disc. I sent the unit in for service and was told it plays the TEST standard DVD and so it performs as it should end of story. As a side note my old GE player handles all the above DVDs with great ease, so it is not my DVDs that are faulty..
Guess I will have to buy another unit, from another manufacturer.. TOO bad but no more LG for me.

I bought this player because although my Phillips DVP-642 works ok, I wanted the ability to have long filenames for my video files (raw mpegs or DivX/XviD) dumped onto a CD/DVD rather than just the 8.3 limitation that the Phillips had. Also, raw files dumped onto DVD +RW/-RW's never seemed to work on my Phillips. They do just fine on the LG.

Another thing regarding the use of DVDs recorded on a stand alone DVD recorder. I've got a Daytek DVR-P30 flashed with Liteon 5001 firmware and have tried +RWs recorded in 1,2,3,4, and 6 hour mode. They work fine with the caveat that you can't press 'next' to switch to another DVD title recorded; you have to jump back to the top level menu and then switch to the next DVD title on the disc. Although forward and reversing to next and previous chapters recorded on the recorder work just fine. +Rs recorded on the DVD recorder work just fine *IF THEY ARE FINALIZED FIRST*; otherwise problems such as jumping/patchiness occur.

The tray meshcanism is flimsy, so use caurion when loading or removing discs. Otherwise, this is a very good DVD player and can be made region free using the file/instructions found at the following link;

http://www.area450.co.uk/lg5083hack.htm

This units was purchased from a Futureshop in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 23/06, and was NOT region free out of the box. After being made region free, it played all of my DVDs ordered from Amazon UK.

Looks like I have a probleme with the audio output,
my receiver is turning off automaticly when playing
a divX movie and it is not randomly, always at the same
sequences, I tried the optical and analog outputs, and the same results. My A/V is a Pioneer Elite, never had a problem before. Is it a common problem ?

When playing MP3 with folders on disk, the player only plays one folder at the time, it is not continuous, it's anoying.

other thing, I bought 2 units, and one of them has problem with MP3 on some DVD-R, I get the disk error message, but when I put it on the other player it's Ok !! It's not a problem for me because only one of them is dedicated to play MP3s. But could be a problem for those who have only one unit.

don't like LG, only take this model because of the reviews on the net, and because it's cheap and suposed to play everything...

I'll get straight to the point...and I'll confirm some of the other users' pros/cons at the same time:

Pros:

1) Plays ALMOST everything but not quite. See cons for details.

2) All avi's that I've created myself and some which I downloaded played flawlessly (DiVX/XviD)

3) Love the fact you can watch the .jpg pics burned on it and play mp3's from other dirs on the same disc. It's like having your own Winamp. You add the mp3's to a list and thats the music you hear when playing back .jpg's. The final result is a nice slideshow with random effects between each pic shown and your favourite muzak playing at the same time.

4) Awesome gui (menus)! The nicest I've seen on any dvd player.

5) All file types are sorted by these categories: Music, Pics and Video. Actually, this is a must.

6) Will even show you the contents of pc game discs on screen. I put one in by accident and it showed me the files/dirs. Can't do anything with them but kinda neat.
Sorta strange why that works and why it doesn't show you .wmv files or .png or .gif files.

7) Nice remote control. Looks good, has all the features I want including disc eject/close. Can't get it to control my Insignia tv as there's no code for it but that's only 13" kitchen tv.

Cons:

1) Tray does seem flimsy and probably any slight accident to it will break it. Cheapest tray I think I've ever seen. It is very thin and light. Don't expect any luck or mercy if you're accident prone.

2) I had several short "funny" .mpg clips downloaded off the internet and burned on a dvd-rw/+rw. Some would play, some not, while others would play with no sound only or would have picture but no sound.

3) It's true. No time remaining but that doesn't bother me too much. It can help you guess how a movie ends if you know how much time is left towards the end. It'd still be nice if we had the option of knowing, if we wanted to.

4) Subs do seem a little small but the testing I've done was on a small 13" tv so I can't verify how bad it is when on a larger set. I am too lazy to hook it up to my large tv where the outlet is not easily accessible. I'll do that once I decide whether I'm keeping this player or not. I probably will...but given the price of $100 plus tax at FutureShop, I'd say it's a little overpriced. I'd say it's worth $80 (CDN), considering the Yahoo! dvd player which also plays divx at Walmart is priced at $60...and since I like this one much better, I'd pay an extra $20. I may return it and wait for a price drop as I don't really need a 2nd player just yet.

5) Flashed the player and made it region free using this site: http://pwp.netcabo.pt/dhammer/

Be sure to read the Extra info. You must rename the file to the model of your player (it's the model that's shown when you go to Setup and highlight 16:9 widescreen, then pressing 1397139. The numbers are from memory so I'm not 100% sure this is correct. And I think you had to press the Pause key before entering the number. There is another firmware flash I tried, I think it was for an LG 6000 model, and that one works perfectly, asking you to enter the region you want (0 for all regions) and that's it. No other changes are made to the system.

One drawback I've noticed with the hack that also gives you bigger subs, though I am not 100% sure yet it's because of the flash or I burned it with the wrong settings in Nero...is that mp3's which had capital letters were showing up as weird characters.

Also, the bigger subs must be for DivX subtitles only and not DVD's as they didn't seem to make any difference when I viewed DVDs with subtitles. The menu states that you can change the size to small, normal and large for DiVX subtitles. Same goes for position, color, etc.

6) It seems you have to play EITHER music, pics or videos. You can't play all formats together because you must press TITLE so that it shows you only music in any given directory on the cd. Press TITLE again to go to pics section will play a slideshow of your .jpg's (and any mp3's you may have added into the list at the same time). You don't have to play the music in your list if you just want to watch the pics. Press TITLE once more to let you select and play video files. Not a biggy, but it's FYI.

7) You can't change the length of how long a .jpg pic will be shown in a slideshow. It's shown for about 7 seconds each (I haven't timed it) if not more before going to the next picture. And if you try to skip to the next pic then it takes a while to load it so it doesn't speed it up. Therefore, there's no way to tell it to show each pic for say 3-5 seconds or to help it by skipping to the next one. This is probably the feature that needs the most improvement in my opinion. It may be faster if you .jpg's were created by a digital camera that's only 2.5 megapixels or less...mine were done with a 3.1 sony DCP-P71 I think is the correct model.

All in all, the best dvd player I've had. The thing I love the most about it is that you can play pics and mp3's at the same time, with random effects between each shown pic. No need to dvd author them on your pc. I haven't seen a dvd player available at Bestbuy or Futureshop that can do this and play all formats, including divx.

I wish there'd be a dvd player that would also play .wmv file in addition to all the other formats. I don't care for quicktime...but there are quite a few .wmv files and they cannot be played on any dvd player it seems. I guess Micro$oft won't allow it...what else is new!

I don't know if divx subs are selectable. Don't have a cd like that so I can't verify this.

Great Player! Plays everything I have used yet, and has a great interface. You can update the firmware with unofficial firmware from http://pwp.netcabo.pt/dhammer/ to get bigger subtitles from subtitle files. The subtitles it displays are tiny, but that firmware works like a charm to make them plenty bigger.

Highly Recommended.

Worst dvd player I've ever had!

Companies like LG should be ashamed of themselves.. releasing a dvd player that won't play any disk recorded on a DVD Recorder... even an LG DVD recorder.... I thought for a month my LIteon Dvd recorder was the culprit - but the Lg refuses to play back anything recorded from Satellite or regular tv.

Since 14% of Canadian homes have DVDrecorders now.. what is the point of releasing a DVD player that won't even play LG recorded DVD's from TV.
THis player is a piece of junk... avoid it like the plague..

The next time I buy an LG DVD player will be NEVER!

Good player, good price.

Pros
* Good menu system, easy to use
* Rich color and picture quality, but only on standard tv. (480i)
* Plays all kinds of medias including DVD+R DL
* Plays all kinds of DIVX. It plays more files than my Philip DVP-642. But occationally there is some loss in the decoded video. I saw a big black block instead of picture.
* Good subtitle support. It supports srt format and dvd idx/sub format.

Cons:
* Horriable picture quality on HDTV. It produces the worst pictures comparing to my other dvd players.
* Progressive Scan is not completely working. I saw a lot of noises under Progressive Scan mode. That is, this player can only output 480i signals.

This ia great player. Got it on a lark while walking by the bargain table at Future Shop. $50 CDN, but no box with it. Has worked perfectly, although as mentioned in another report there are occasions when the video gets wacky (blocky and wrong colour) and then corrects itself. This does happen more often with RW then plain old R media. Also plays subtitles without a problem. There is an unofficial firmware update for this machine that improves the subtitle features mostly, written by fallenangel and can be foudn at softpedia.

The 'real' model number for this is DVX99__. Check the back of your machine.

Got it last night and very happy. Agree with the one lacking item - it won't show time remaining in disc.

Are there firmware updates that may address this? Other than that - highly recommended for the price.

PS - Fellow Canadians - if you go to future shop and say you want them to match their one day friend and family price of $70 from Dec. 3 - they will ... I got it last night for $70.

After reading a few reviews comparing the LG to the Philips DVP642, thought I would give my opinion as an owner of both machines. I have only had the LG for 2 days, but so far, it is quite impressive, and does out perform the 642, with a couple of important features.
LG 530 can play DiVX files with DTS audio, and DiVX files over 2GB in size, both were not workable with the Philips machine.

Another good feature of the LG, is the menu / file system, in that it is fast and easy to navigate, and shows far more characters than the Philips, which is great for discs with many files. The Philips would only show about 9 characters long, which made it useless for many files to read the actual title.

DiVX viewed through component video cables looks great, expesially with a high bitrate file, it is hard to tell the difference from a DVD.

Really good bang for the buck. I love being able to put 12 good quality one-hour TV episodes (minus the commercials) on one disc and watch it on my TV. So far it's played everything I've thrown at it. The only flaw I can see with the player (and others have seen this too) is that every once in a great while when playing MPEG-4 media there will be a small amount of image corruption until the next keyframe is read. This happens very rarely (only once every few hours or so) and is the only reason I didn't give it a perfect ten. For me, it didn't seem to happen as often on recordable media as it did on rewritable media, and if you seek back to the same position the error does not appear again. It's only a very minor problem for one type of media though, so for as inexpensive as the player is, I don't think it should prevent a cost-conscious buyer from trying out this player.

For the money, this player is very hard to beat. Can play anamorphic PAL DVD's like a dream, no issues at all. I've tried Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell, BenQ, Ritek, TDK, and Ridata burned DVD media, both + & -, also +DL media, and it all played excellently.

*Pros*
Very good picture w/ rich colours
Selection of slow motion speeds 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2
Ability to play large variety of burned dvd media
Will play raw avi files burned on DVD perfectly
Excellent PAL to NTSC conversion

*Cons*
Thin tray (seems strong enough though) with poor holes for disc pick-up
Poor selection of FF speeds
Remote requires fairly direct pointing
Poorer sound than some players, but these are almost 7X the price
Does not (cannot!) display remaining playback time in either chapter or title
Display is too small to read at more than 6 feet

Just got a DVD burner and bought this player after doing some research on the Internet.

Can't go wrong with this player. My biggest issue was being able to play PAL DVDs on my DVD player, this baby does it all.

The Price is very attractive, can't go wrong for $90!!!

On the box, it claims to be a region 1 player but it really is region free.

It's slim but wide, the tray is quite fragile.

The remote signal must really be targetted on the device.

The GUI is beautiful.

It is quite noisy when it is reading a DVD / CD

Another great feature is the DivX/XviD playback, which works awesome.

There was a few pixelation issues with an XviD movie I played (Red Eye on a Sony CD-R), I played the same movie on the same media but with DivX encoding and there was no pixelation issues.

Plays all my VCDS/SVCDS.

Ideal player for the average person's budget!

Media I used:

DVD-R Sony
DVD-R (100 DVD-Rs for 25$)
DVD+R TDK
CD-R Sony
