I have been using this DVD player for over a year now and couldn't be happier. I probably use it for playing DivX/XviD files just as much as for actual DVDs, and for that purpose it excels. The interface is fast and responsive, which was what I was most pleased with. Most video files even fast forward and rewind VERY smoothly.
If you can still find this unit, I heartily recommend one. After six months of using mine, I bought a second one for my bedroom and it's performed just as flawlessly. |

| GARBAGE!!! I bought my first one back in November '05 and loved it until about 20 days of ownership. After that point it would freeze while watching a dvd and I couldn't do anything, not even turn it off. I actually had to unplug the power. So, I returned and got another one, thinking the first was just a fluke. The second one worked fine for the first 6 or 7 months. Now it appears to have some heat issue because after watching a dvd for about an hour or so, it will freeze up for 5-10 seconds and then start playing again. This is consistent regardless of the type of disc. I've looked around online and have found other people with the same problem. Very poor quality. I would NOT recommend this player to anyone. |

It has played everything I've thrown at it so far. I haven't tested the MP3/WMA/JPG features yet or the memory card slots.
It has played all my DivX/XviD files that contain either VBR MP3, CBR MP3 or AC3 audio. It scans through at rates of 2x, 4x, 16x and 100x on DivX/XviD and the audio/video stays in sync. This is the DivX/XviD player to get. Go to BestBuy in the US and look for open box deals on it. I grabbed mine there for $49.99. They had a display model with no remote for that price, but when I frowned he looked for any open box ones and there was a bunch that were priced at over $100 but he matched the display units price of $49.99! Can't beat that deal!
There is one negative. Contrary to what I've read here, the upconversion sucks. The picture quality compared with my Pioneer DV563A is noticeably worse at all resolution settings for DVD's. But since I'll primarily be using this for DivX/XviD content it's not a big deal. |

| Well this is my second post. Initially when I purchased this player, it played my backed up DVD's without any issues. For some odd reason, it recently stopped playing my backups. All my regular DVD's play fine but all of my backed up DVD's stopped. Weird!!! |

I would have given this a 10(+) rating but there is a serious problem, noted by others, and that is the slot feed for discs. I too am having problems with discs not loading or unloading.
BUT the player has played everything, including .MPG and .AVI files, also the upconversion on composite video is worth the price, it is near HDTV clarity. YES it works as promised by LG. IT IS SUPERB!
>one other thing, Full Screen and Amorphic movies are stretched to fit 16:9 --- resulting in a bunch of short and fat actors, I don't know how to adjust this.
Recommend LG, there is a sister-model that has a tray feed. Find that one and you will have it all. |

| So far so good. Works with most (maybe all) of my DVD+R's I have around. So far, the only thing I can say that I dislike about this player is that it scratches the disc when you load and unload your disc. Other then that, I'm very pleased. Will update some with more info after a week or month of playing. |

Just adding some remote hacks for this player to allow upscaling (720p and 1080i) over the component video output:
HDCP off/on:
PAUSE,1,2,3,6,9
on screen: "OK H" or "Default H" (Status)
(2xPAUSE to leave)
Macrovision off/on:
Pause,7,4,1,5,3,6,9
on screen: "OK M" oder "Default M" (Status)
(2xPAUSE to leave)
Video/HDMI Info Page:
Pause,2,4,8,6,5
Use this to check and see if HDCP protection and Macrovision are off
Factory reset + SYSTEM INFORMATION page
go to Setup/video/TV Aspect/16:9
and press 1,3,9,7,1,3,9,ENTER
Remote Hacks are permenant unless you use these codes to restore defaults. |

This is an update:
Had to return to BestBuy because it keeps freezing on my 4X DVD+R Verbatim discs that are problem free even on my 6 years old Sony DVP-S330. Don't know if this machine doesn't like +R or Verbatim? or Both? |

Bought this to replace my Philips 642, which picky about discs and freeze all the time. LG load up discs quicker than 642.
Two concerns:
1. It has hard time playing my 4x burnt discs so I have to re-copy my freeze up 4x to 8x and they'll be fine. Hope LG will issue a firmware to fix this problem.
2. vaccum loading is struggling. Both taking and ejecting discs, wonder how reliable the hardware mechanism is and how long will it last without damaging the discs. |

| I absolutely love this DVD player!! Has played every movie disk I have thrown at it. I got it mainly for the HD upconversion, which does exactly what is says it does.(Resolutions: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i) This has NTSC/PAL conversion built in which I was not expecting because LG didn't list it as a feature. |

I've only owned this player for a few hours. The major problem I've found is that it has problems handling printable CDs and DVDs. The unit is slot loading. When it pulls one of these discs into the player, it struggles to suck the disc in, so I have to jam the disc harder so that it has a firmer grip on the disc. Ejecting is an even bigger issue... On the printable discs, it has a very difficult time ejecting the disc. I figured out that it is because the printable surface isn't smoooth like a silk-screen printed label, so it sticks on the top part of the slot. To get the disc out, I have to insert a sheet of paper so it sits on top of the disc, and then hit the OPEN button. The printable surface then slides against the piece of paper, allowing the disc to eject. Once the disc is out of the player, I noticed that the player left several rub-like scratches on the readable side, probably by the grip that had trouble pulling and pushing the disc.
Other than the physical problem, it played all my DivX 3.x, 4 and 5 files, as well as XviD. It played the audio CDs. On the XviD files, it read the soft subtitle files. That's all I could test.
It's a real shame LG switched to a slot-loading drive. Otherwise, I would've scored it a 10. |

| I bought this dvd player after reading comments on videohelp.com hoping I would get a player that would play anything. As far as Divx and xvid files go this player is great. It has played every one of those files I have sent its way. However I have two major problems with this dvd player. First it wont play basic mpeg 1 files. I used to have a crappy dvd player about 3 years ago that could play any mpg file but this player wont play any of them. Second if you have a 16x9 tv get ready for issues. If you are familiar with the tvs that have the 4 settings, Full/Zoom/WideZoom/Standard. This dvd player locks your tv in the Full mode. I have tried 3 other dvd players and all work fine but when I plug in my LG it locks in the full mode and I cant switch it. What this means is when I watch any standard frame DVD, like Seinfeld, it stretches the picture. I like to watch standard frame programs as standard frame. Right?! The rest of the reviews I read were pretty right on. Just thought you should know of those two issues. |

| I'm comparing this player to the Philips 642 which I have used for the past 2 years. I primarily watch xvid and divx TV shows downloaded over the internet. Unlike the Philips, this player displays the full filename on the menu and is not truncated. The player reads the disc and loads the files a lot faster than the 642. The buttons on the remote are intuitive, while the 642 is cumbersome. No problems with qpel in xvid. Unprotected content can be displayed at 1080i over componet cables. Protected discs will display 720p and 1080i over HDMI. Swiching between 480i 480p, 720p and 1080i is done with a button on the player itself, a really nice touch. The upsampling of my xvids to 1080i was simply amazing on my HDTV. Fast forward and rewind at 100x. SWEET ! The unit will play movies and audio and show Jpegs from a memory card. I know this player retails at 3 times the price of a 642, but it is worth every penny. |

Just purchased the 511 and so far it seems to be a great DVD player. I'm very impressed with the overall speed with which it browses discs..plays files, etc.. As far as Divx and Xvid, it has played everything I've thrown at it, and the Divx and Xvid movies I've played so far looked excellent on my 53" tv. Every format of DVDR has played perfectly.(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R DL, etc..) Another feature I like about the 511 is that it's slot loading.
The only problem I have with this player is how the remote works. You have to have the remote aimed directly at the player to work. Angle the remote only slightly to the left or right of the player and the remote won't work. Tried putting different batteries in and it didn't help.
Overall I would definitely recommend this player. |

I don't actually own this player, but I know from product info provided by LG that this is basically the same player as the LG DVB-418, with all the same capabilities, but slimmer and with a vacuum-loader for the CD's, instead of the tray the 418-model has.
So for more info, check out the specs on the LG DVB-418. |
