Comments:
I tested many different types of videos and audio with this player. This model says "MP3/ VCD/ DVD/ CD Player" on the bottom.

Plays WMA & MP3 on data CD. If mixed data and audio tracks on one CD, it will only play audio tracks.

Plays all XSVCD's video-wise and most audio 44 & 48K (see notes an audio).

Plays most XVCD's, but has occasional problems when using B-frames when encoding out of specs. Larger frame sizes (height>240), telecine and b-frames cause problems with MPEG1. Not sure what exactly is causing this. But vertical sync is lost and colors rotate vertically on screen. Without either b-frames or when encoded @ 30fps (w or w/o b-frames), works fine.

All videos tested with min bitrate of 300kbps.

MPEG1 @ 23.976 fps
bitrates: up to 1700 avg tested with max 2500kbps. CQ and VBR work.
Audio: Only checked 44.1K-224kb/s MPEG1, layer II works.
Video: 352x240, 240x176, 320x176 all work.
352x480, 528x480, 704x480 only work without b frames or encoded directly @ 30fps. Probably a buffer allocation problem.

MPEG2 @ 23.976 fps
bitrates: up to 4000 avg tested with max 9800kbps. All types of bitrates work (CQ, VBR, etc).
Audio: Plays 44.1K and 48K MPEG1, Layer II. 32K does not work, comes out slow as if sound was in slow mo.
Stereo, dual channel and joined stereo tested at following bitrates (44.1K): 64, 96, 112, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256, 320, 384 and vbr.
48K tested: 192, 224 and vbr (w/ 192 max). Other bitrates should works fine.

Only problem encountered is MPEG1, b-frames, telecine and >240 height combination. Also will not play 32K audio. Everything else works fine.

This player disregards encoded aspect ratio and displays as 4:3 no matter what for S/VCD. Anamorphic does not work on S/VCD as it does for DVD. Anamorphic for DVD must be set on the DVD player for it to work (NTSC LB).

S/VCD tracks cannot play AC3 even though DVD can. S/VCD also cannot play MP3.

Plays all DVD's thrown at it.

FANTASTIC !!! I bought this player at CompUSA some time ago. It worked fine for a while and then stopped playing DVDs -- it could still play CDs. Lenoxx wanted $40+ to send it back for repair, so I left it in my closet. I just came across it and looked up the region code hack on your site. THE HACK FIXED THE PROBLEM SO THAT IT NOW PLAYS DVDS AGAIN !!! Thanks (I don't know if this is either a common problem and/or a common solution, but it works great.
P.S. - I had tried various different discs before -- so it was definitely not a typical "region" problem.

This is a cheap DVD player that CompUSA is still selling.
It was a give-away a couple of times (i.e. nearly free after rebate).

I used it as an "acid test" for some of the different formats (SVCD, VDC, etc.)...figuring if this player will play them, then it's likely some cheap player one of my family members buys will likely be able to play it too.

One good thing about the player is that it's easily hacked to be region and Macrovision free.

For the price compared to some of the higher end ones I have looked at that can do the same this player is alright in my book. I make VCDs on a regulare basis and it has never had a problem with them. I am going to be trying DVD-Rs so I will re-post to give update. The only problem I have had ( and I don't know if it was the disc or the player) but my Pearl Harbor disc started freezing up at a certain point just a few days ago. I go a now one but haven't tried that one yet. Again watch for my repost and I will update.

It's a good player for the price and quality is comprable.

I can play PAL R2 dvds with this and I paid 60$ for it at Wallmart.

Picture quality is horrible but you won't notice unless you try a movie in another dvd player before playing it in this one.

Some people mentionned the "hang" problem when going from a scene to another, it is a bit annoying when it happens, it is very noticible.

But for 60$....

Plays SVCD and VCD burned anyway you feel like, and plays cheap generic, to expensice Verbatims. Pic quality not the greatest compared to high end Sony dvd players, but for the price, is well worth it just for VCD and SVCD. Also, the hack is super easy, and works excellent.

Got mine at CompUSA for free after rebate when bought with Monster Cables. Haven't used it much. I do know it works well with Maxell DVD-R 2x certified disks to record DVD's with DVDxcopy. Very satisfied with it in that regard.

I've only had this player a few weeks and so far I've been fairly impressed (considering the price). However, I rented Star Wars, Episode II this weekend, and every time the scene changed in the movie the player had this ANNOYING pause (maybe about 1/10 of a second - DEFINITELY noticable). Since it happened whenever there was a dramatic change from one movie frame to the next, I can only assume it's because the video processor couldn't keep up. The audio paused along with the video, of course, and that's what made it SO obvious and annoying. The background music would "skip" when the scene changed.

What kind of cheap crap is this thing?

I give it a 4, rather than a 1, though, because it has played other (less complicated) movies okay, and it has played every VCD or MP3 disk I've thrown its way. Also, the region-free/macrovision hack is extremely easy.

Using my G4 mac to burn VCDs. The Verbatim cd-r 1x-16x dark blue DID NOT work as a VCD.

cd-r TDK 650MB light blue works VCD and SVCD with menu.
cd-r Memorex 700MB x48 silver works SVCD and XSVCD.
I used MissingMediaTools w/ MediaPipe to encode.
Toast to burn. Today I did a 84min movie to 2 disks at a bitrate of 2000. res 480x480 I think. In MMT the settings for XSVCD was selected and when played in the Lenoxx the quality was fine. The player said the disk was a CVD. fast forward, rev ,slow moo, zoom , Time diplayed all worked.
If I encoded the 84min movie as a standard SVCD it would require 3 disk so I lowered the bitrate and used XSVCD to fit 84min on 2 disks.

The player sometimes acts up with SVCDs when first placed into the player. The player will make a skipping noise a couple of times and then report that the disk is unsupported. I usually just have to re-insert the disk and it will start playing.

One of the features that I really like on the player is the ability to fast forward through SVCDs. The Apex 1500 is never able to fast forward through SVCDs.

Nice low end player.

DVD+RW runs (tested with Platinum DVD+RW), but the disc has to be set to mode 2 (HP definition). This means, that after you burned a DVD+RW you need the "dvdplusrwbitset" tool (http://www.dvdplusrw.org/files/dvdplusrwbitset.exe) to set the disc to "DVD-ROM specification [revision 1]". This is done in a few seconds and afterwards the player will be happy :)

The player really rocks because it eats all (important) discs (except salami).

NEW MODELS DO PLAY VCD'S (I'm told). After my previous post which said that newer models do not play VCD's I learned that the new models can be easily modified so they will. The fix is described on the hacks section of this website. I have not tried it because I returned mine. But someone emailed me and said it worked on their new unit which they just bought at COMP-USA. The hack may also remove the region restriction.

WARNING: I just bought one of these from COMP-USA. I was not able to get it to play a SVCD that I made. On the middle of page 13 of the manual, I found the following:

"This DVD player cannot play the following discs: VCD ..."

Since other posters here said it did play VCD's and the manual said it didn't I called the technical support 800 number. A representative told me that there are two different versions of the DVD-2003. The older version can play VCD's. In the newer version the VCD capability has been removed. The box on the older version states that it can play VCD's while the box for the newer version does not. So if you buy one, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE OLDER, VCD CAPABLE VERSION.

Why was that capability removed? The representative said that VCD was an “obsolete” and "illegal" format which was making companies that produce movies upset because of pirating.

Question: Anyone have an idea about how to change (hack) a new model into a previous model?

A terrific cheap DVD on sale at CompUSA with a $20 rebate. I got it to play VCD's and SVCD's and it does a fine job. I just have it hooked up to a bedroom TV, so I haven't really examined its special capabilities. But to watch stuff you've compiled using Nero, it works fine for a very reasonable price!
