Have had a few troubles navigating SVCD menus that work fine in a software DVD player, and ocasionally audio is just a tiny bit out of sync.

FYI - Manual & Firmware are available at http://www.kosselectronics.ca/index/screen/products_3/model_ID/950.html

Purchased mine as a "reconditioned" unit at one of those discount stores for $39 CDN.
Seems to work with everything I have thrown at it, except KVCD. Something much more expensive players won't do.
As noted above, the on/off/standby of the remote is useless, and requires the actual button to be pushed to play anything at all.
Doesn't like KVCD, but that could have been my encoding mistake.
To ensure compatibility, I burn everything with the VCD header trick after encoding in SVCD, and it plays them all, as well as VCDEasy and Nero Vision Express menu/chapter encodes.
I buy no-name, no-label CDR's in a 50 pack, and burn at full 48x, scribble the name on it in felt pen, and they play.
Other than it's finicky on/off thing, a great, ultra-cheap player that does more than advertised.

Comments:
When I turn off the unit using the remote and it stays off for a while, when I turn it back on using the remote I cannot play DVD.

I have to turn the unit completely off an on using the main "On/Off" button on the unit.

Why bother to put a "on/off" button on the remote to put the unit in "standby" mode if it implies the unit won't work later.

Comments:
Plays DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW. Even cheap Princo DVD-R's that other players have trouble with.

I bought it because it can play PAL DVD's on NTSC TV's, can be made region-free using a simple remote hack, and the firmware can be easily upgraded by burning it on a CD-R. It IS a bit buggy, as Joseph Bart reported above. It just acts funny occasionally. It can sometimes do things like not skipping to the next chapter when asked to, not wanting to go to a specific time into the movie... Nothing really critical, and fixed by a power cycle, but can be annoying. It has "character"... in a bad way.

Here's one bug about the region free hack. After performing it, if you unplug the player OR power it off from the front panel power button (not from the remote, which only puts it in Standby), the screen will be garbled the next time when you power it up. It doesn't go into PAL mode (the screen is not scrolling). It's more like the colors are all wrong, and the top half of the picture is broken/badly distorted. It is very important to note that you will only see this if you use the COMPONENT. The Composite and S-Video outputs strangely display the correct picture, while the Component Out is all garbled! The only way I could get rid of this was by undoing the Remote hack (while using the signal from the Composite out, so that I could see what I was doing), followed by a power off / power on.

You will not run into this problem if you just put the receiver in Standby (from the remote), instead of completely powering it off from the front panel (unless there's a power failure, of course!). You also won't see it if you don't use Component Out, or if you don't do the remote hack to make it region free.

In colclusion, I decided to live with its bugs, considering its low price and the fact that it plays all my original and burned DVD's, regardless of PAL/NTSC/region/cheap media etc. The image quality is quite good, too. I hope they will release a less buggy firmware in the future, and it hels that it's easy to upgrade.

Comments:
It’s a best player I had so far. It plays almost all I have tried. CDR, CDR, DVDR, DVDRW, JPEG, MP3, VCD, SVSD and some more I haven’t tried yet. For $80 Canadian =$60US I can’t complain. I specially like being able to use DVDRW for DVD rips so I can reuse them again after a while. It plays even inexpensive x1 Princo DVDRs which used to give my other players hard time especially at the end of the movies.
Great work KOSS!
JOSEPH

Comments:
I was searching for a player that would play my sattelite ripped XSVCD's... this one does... perfectly, also added bonus of doing MP3 on DVD although it seemed to hang every so often. Can randomize MP3 playlist, something a couple of players I looked at couldn't do. Seems like a really buggy player, I even tried upgrading the firmware off of their website and it didn't help. Had troubles jumping to specific chapters even in a retail DVD. Player unresponsive every so often requiring a power cycle. Might have just been the strange formats I was throwing at it. Has 2 Karaoke Mic inputs but does not support CD+G Karaoke discs, had to convert all my wife's discs to DVD. I loved and hated this player all at once, I ended up returning it because I realized that the computer I had hooked up to my home theatre can do everything that I wanted this player to do by just adding a remote control.
