I picked this up at Sears for under 50 bucks w/2 year warranty. It has played everything I have thrown at it so far. Region hack posted on this site works great and it does PAL-NTSC conversion out of the box. The only PAL disc I have seen any stuttering on is Hellraiser R2 Anchor Bay disc. This is a great, cheap player. I like it so much I went back to Sears and picked up 2 more to use in case this one should die.

Happy with it so far. Plans for its use are mostly for inexpensive CD/MP3/WMA player for music. Happy that it plays WMA files from DVD+RW. I haven't tried MP3 from DVD, but I am guessing that will work also.

This DVD player played store bought movies without any problems. However it would not read a single one of the DVDs I have made myself on DVD-R. Every single one I tried it would say Incompatible Disc or just not recognize that there was even a disc in there.

And since reading my DVD-Rs was the main point of me buying this player, it obviously wasn't going to work. I returned it to Sears and got the Samsum DVD-P241 instead which has worked flawlessly. The Samsung is only an extra $10 but I got it for a free upgrade because Sears was out of the Koss model and I had their replacement service plan thing.

I'd recommend checking out the Samsung over this player.

This DVD player is well worth the price, but let the buyer beware when it comes to WMA compatibility. I found it played only WMA files I ripped on the most recent version of Windows Media Player. So, my previous archive WMA files have become obsolete. I just purchased this player at Sears On 11-28-03.

Wow I was shocked when I picked this unit up as a backup incase my bedroom player ever went out, I got it for about 35 bucks and just pugged it in for the hell of it to see what formats it would read. I couldnt be happier with the software in this thing! While the box claims it will play DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW I have not tried any yet. But everything I did try it played without issue. MP3 at every speed, jpg, cd-r and rw, kodak cd and svcd! The vcd playback is not as crisp as my Panasonic S35 but for 35 bucks who cares! Consider all the formats this will play plus its progressive scan, optical out, component AND S-vid out and full LCD display. Well worth the money and a great bedroom or kids room player!

Comments:
I found it plays VCDs from cdr media of various types with no problems or skipping. Also plays DVD-R movies on Memorex single sided version 2 media which were burned with Toast Titanium 5.2 on Apple Macintosh.

Music mp3s played fine on all types of CDR media; however the names of the tracks were cropped if they exceeded 12 characters.

To my disappointment however, it does not play mp3s burned on DVD-R media. The manual states "recordings with DVD-R discs must be made in Video DVD mode." Please post message if you know how to do this.

I can confirm these two hacks. I have the Koss KD365 with a manufacter date of September 2003 which was purchased at Sears in the USA in November 2003.

Region code hack posted by LB at July 19 2003:

To play DVDs other than region 1 encoded ones:
1. Press the "menu" key
2. Press the numbers 1,6,7,1,9
3. A menu should appear on the upper-right corner of the tv screen asking which region you wish to play, 0 for region free, 2 for UK...
4. Press the number of the desired region, wait a second or two and you should be able to load and view the DVD

Other hack posted by 409 at July 23 2003:

With no disc in the player:
7,6,0,1,9 at the menu displays a firmware information/upgrade menu.

In addition, no macrovision disable hack is found yet, but any future firmware might be found here:

All I had laying around was Memorex media (DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R and CD-RW). All 4 of these formats tested compatible. The SVCD looked a bit more splotchy with pixel squares than in my Norcent DP300, maybe because the Koss recognized the file as VCD - not SVCD. Regardless, I was very impressed with the physical quality of player, along with the fact that it supports so many file formats, media and A/V output types.

I have it hooked up as Component video with Coaxial Digital audio. The DVD picture looks MUCH better in dark frames than the Norcent DP300 ever could. In fact, I find the picture quality as good if not better than my $175 Panasonic.

A great buy from Sears at $50.00 and I even added a 2-year replacement warranty for $7.12.

Would recommend it to anyone.

Got for a great price at Sears. I have been burning Princo and Xtreme DVD-R's and DVD-RW's with no problem. (Using newest versions of CloneDVD/AnyDVD). Load times are reasonable and the unit is quiet. Based on others comments and my own experience with Koss products, it is hit or miss. If the unit works out of the box though it usually will continue to.

This is a follow up of my previous entry. After having tried more discs in this player, and finding it continued to have problems, I finally returned it. The DVD-R still never played the audio, and on another DVD+R, towards the end of the disc, it would begin to pause and shudder the picture. Terrible. These same discs however worked fine in other players, so it had to be the player. I returned it and went and bought an RCA DRC212N at Walmart for $60. I have tested that one thorougly and it has played EVERYTHING, including VCD, SVCD, MP3, JPG, DVD-/+R/RW, DVD-VIDEO, and CD Audio etc... Go for that one instead of this Koss one. They make good headphones, but unfortunately don't make very good DVD players.

Comments:
I recently got this to replace my old Toshiba SD-1600. That was a decent player, but did not play my DVD+R, +RW, or -RW. It did play a DVD-R though, even though it said in the manual it would not. Anyway, the Koss KD365 actually advertises itself to be able to play both the DVD+R/W and DVD-R/W discs. I have tried all 4 types of disc and all work except that the DVD-R I tried would only play the video on it, and not the audio. Oddly enough, this same disc worked ok in the Toshiba. I don't know if it's the disc or the player that is at fault. I have emailed Koss twice now about this and they have not responded yet. Found the player at Sears online advertised for $59, and at the store it was $79. I told them it was $59 on the website so they honored it. How very nice of them!
The only things I don't really like about the unit is that there is a little menu that comes up each time you click the fast forward button. It is handy, because you can use it to forward either by chapter or title, but it can be annoying when you just want to flip to the next chapter. It is acceptable though. The other thing is the Remote. It's rather oddly laid out, and takes some getting used to. But the buttons do glow in the dark! That's nice when you are watching it in a dark room. It does play vcd's ok, and mp3s and jpg's. I haven't tried the wma yet, nor have I checked to see if it can use MP3's on a dvd. Other than that, it's a fairly decent player for the price. Now if their customer support by email was only a little better, I would have rated it higher, maybe a 9.

Tested this DVD player at Sears. Played my DVD-RW and MP3 with no problem. MP3 menu looked decent but not as good as Go.Video player.

Would not play a MiniDVD on CD-R media so I didn't buy it. I found a nice ISO MiniDVD image with Dolby Digital/DTS trailers at:

http://www.cinenow.com/us/vobtrailer.php3

Plays fine on computer but would like to find a home DVD player in the US that supports MiniDVD but most of the players listed here seem to be available in Europe.
