Overall a good DVD player for the value. We've been punishing it with Netflix movies nonstop now for 3 years and it's still running like new. The only disc it's had trouble with was the CSI series. It has extremely bad skipping on the 3rd episode but strangely plays all others perfectly.

I have had a love-hate relationship with this KLH DVD player over the past 4 or 5 years I believe. But that being said, just the fact its been so long I can't complain too much. It was with me before my DVD burner when I could only make CDR's and it played my svcd's and vcd's almost perfectly. Then it worked pretty well with my DVD+R's through two different burners, most recently my 16X DL MAD DOG external. Lately it has been very weird, maybe its just the cheap media I bought or that I'm burning at too high a speed (16X), but I tried at lower settings too and its been off and on. Stil it is pretty realiable depending on how long I want to fuck around with it to make it work. Today though, I almost broke the DVD player in half, because when it doesn't like a disc (whether its real or backup) it takes forever to say "BAD DISC" and it won't let you eject the dvd tray while its "working". So I almost ripped it to shreds, but as I was looking for a solution to my problem it finally gave up and out came the dvd tray. So it spared its own life by ceasing to torture me all at once. So after 5 long years its still running even with its now heavy scratch marks from me trying to pry out the tray with a screwdriver. I have yet to try the DVD DL on it yet but it seems like other ppl have and it should be cool. We'll see.

Pretty sweet for the price ($20 - $20 rebate @ CompUSA a couple of years ago). Just tried playing a DVD+R DL and it worked fine (Not sure about the BitSetting option but I used DVDFab Express for the record.)

Covers the basics, but no bells and whistles.

-"Bad Disc" error on miniDVD, MPEGISO, DVD-MPEGISO, DVD-MP3, and I assume on DVD-WMA or DVD-JPG.
-Can play MP3/WMA/JPG off a CD, but shortens filenames and makes up it's own directory structure.
-Plays PAL VCD/DVD fine, but no region hack available.
-No front display, and the on-screen display is not too detailed.

Oh well, pretty sure it was cheap.

Thumbs up on this CompUSA $49 special on my way home from work. I've collected tons of burnt DVD+R discs I have not been able to play back in anything but a PC DVD-Rom drive. Didn't have access to this web site while at the store, but rolled the dice and took it home. It plays both DVD+R and VCD formats perfectly, even with cheap-ass no-name media. Perfect companion player to DVDxCopy program(s), and an over-the-top remote control that includes volume control! Fifty bucks here in Silicon Valley, and from other comments seen around town as low as 20 bucks, you can't go wrong. It's tiny enough to throw in your luggage and take your DVD+R collection with you to hotels, the cabin, etc. Why not? I'm a converted believer to this frugal Apex/KLH solution!

Okay, I got this on black Friday for $20 at bestbuy. and wanted to wait until I got to try many types of media to review it.

It plays all types of media I have put into it.
It plays:
Mashua? DVD+R (sold at Wal-Mart)
TDK 4x DVD+R
K Hypermedia DVD-R (supercheap $5 for 25 disks)
Imation CD-R

These were recorded using DVD X COPY and DVD X COPY Express.

The quality of this player is nice. It is a remarked Apex as evidenced by the similarity of the remote to those of other Apex players.

I formerly owned a Samsung DVD-709 which I gave up for reasons of media compatibility.

Anyway, the component outs are a nice feature that aren't expected on a player at this price point.

This player is awesome for the price and it has a nice image as well as many features.

Comments:
No prob. having used this player for almost a year now.

Handles SVCDs very well as long as there are no menus -- just the movie - chapter points from VCDEasy work fine. Any other SVCD features besides chapters and the audio will loose sync as reported by others, but *only* then - any time an extra track is added (besides the normal 2 SVCD tracks) it's a prob for this player. Plays SVCDs with 48 k audio great, but won't do AC3 on SVCD.

Quality of CDR(W) blanks is VERY important with this player. I've even had some brand name blanks cause prob with picture breaking up though it's rare (maybe bad production runs?). Likewise, if the disc is scratched or dirty it will either not play or the picture will break up. It's necessary to do a full erase of CDRW, not the quick version, and the Memorex HiSpeed CDRWs I've been using wear out fairly rapidly, though they may still work with data just fine.

With a Memorex/Liteon CDRW drive, I've done quite a few SVCDs using TDK, Fujifilm, Phillips, & Imation that work great. I've burned plain SVCDs that work using Nero & Magix, but prefer VCDEasy because of adding chapters. With Nero, set MPEG@ (standard) & ENTRYSVD. No settings needed for Magix, & with VCDEasy just have the option for the Segment folder checked. Minor overburns seem to work OK.

As noted by someone else I think, IF/When you have a bad disc that the player can't read, turning the player off & back on with the CD still inserted can help.

I purchased this player $20 after rebate at Bestbuy on Black Friday. It's funny I can't put $20 in price section. Anyway, basically this player plays everything I tried. I got
Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R, Ritek G3 DVD-R, TDK 4x DVD+R, Optimum 2x DVD-R, Verbatim 2.4x DVD+RW, TDK CD with VCD.
Some of DVDs were not played in my Daewoo 5700 because of authoring problem of pinnacle instantcopy but KLH can play. FYI I got Sony DRU500A. Daewoo 5700 gives little bit better color than KLH but not big problem. I'm pretty satisfied with this at this price. I'm not sure how long this will last but who cares with $20?

this player is known as an ALBA DVD55, here in the UK.
i dont know what kind of firmware is in it in the US,but here in the UK,its sold at toys-r-us stores for £37.99.
i bought 2,and they play everything ive thrown at it,except for Region 1 discs.
ive played 1 region 1 disc, and that was Resident Evil,so i think it may be region free, even though it says (1) on the box.
the other strange thing is that it plays region 3 movies(crouching tiger, hidden dragon-chinese version).
i havent seen a multi-region code for it yet,but the hack for this player doesnt work.
but i would recommend this player of the shite that Asda(Walmart) sell here in the UK.

This player is a good buy for $35 at BestBuy if you only intend to play commercial DVD movies, but it DOES NOT PLAY SVCDs (the sound is always out of sync; therefore, the player WILL NOT PLAY SVCDs)! Also, MP3s and JPEGs are impossible to find when arranged in folders because the menu is terrible (only shows a few JPEG thumbnails at a time instead of file names). It will not play MP3s on DVD-R/+R. If there is Macrovision on a commercial DVD, and you wire the KD-1220 through an older VCR, the screen will go dark/light/dark/light (some ambulance chaser should find a client and sue the studios and Macrovision for this mess, because the DVD packages do not warn buyers). There are so many problems with this player, it would be easier for me to tell you the one rare situation in which it would work properly. I intend to return mine tomorrow.

Played intro logo w/o audio, then locked up on a black screen. I've seen other reports of the same kind of lockup with other DVD titles.

This was the first time I had a problem reading a disc - out of almost 100 titles.

Otherwise, no real complaints.
No region hack.
Component outputs.
For $40, it was a good deal.

Comments:
Purchased new in June at Best Buy for approximately $45. All of my testing was performed by playing through a 10+ year old Emerson mono NTSC VCR that is connected via RF coax to a 3 year old GE mono NTSC TV. The TV has no composite inputs, so I'm essentially using the VCR as an RF modulator. This arrangement has problems with Macrovision enabled titles, but other DVD players I've tried have the exact same problem with this TV/VCR combo. Newer VCRs seem to be able to handle DVD input without Macrovision problems.

I searched the web for a website for KLH Digital, and was not able to find one.

Everthing about the KLH KD-1220's appearance indicates that it is a rebadged Apex. Even the box and printed literature inside the box are similar to what came with my Apex 1010W.

Comparing the KLH KD-1220 remote (KLH RM-1220) to the Apex 1010W remote (Apex RM-1010W) - even though the button layout is identical (including the shape and color of all buttons) and the names of the buttons are identical except for one button (KLH "AFF" vs. Apex "TV Mode"), the remotes for the two players are completely incompatible. This may be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you are trying to do. The most likely impact of this is that finding a "universal remote" to control the KLH may be a lot tougher as the KLH players are somewhat rare, but the Apex are very common.

I only tried one DVD+R; it was burned onto a Fujifilm 4.7 GB DVD+R media. I played the entire movie, and it worked without any noticable problems. Even the chapter skip worked.

I did not try any of the digital audio output modes.

VCD: I tried several VCDs (including both NTSC and PAL encoded discs) and they all were able to play fine, but I wasn't able to get the VCD menus to work. I copied one of my CD-R VCDs to a CD-RW and it played correctly.

SVCD: I tried both PAL and NTSC SVCDs on CD-R and they all worked fine. The subtitles on the SVCD CVD demo disc did not work. I copied one of my SVCDs to CD-RW and it played correctly.

SVCD subtitles: I downloaded test_svcd_ntsc.zip (CVD subtitles) and svcd_ogt_test_ntsc.zip (SVCD subtitles) from http://www.dvdrhelp.com/svcd/ and burned them to CD-R with Nero 5.5.9.16. The video and audio played, but I couldn't get subtitles working with either disc.

CDDA: Tried a silver and CD-R and they both worked fine.

MPEG on ISO: I tried a couple of different CD-R discs in standard ISO format that had MPEG-1 files burned on them. I got the error message "Bad Disc" every time.

MP3 music on ISO: I tried a couple of different CD-R discs that contained MP3 music files organized into multiple levels of subdirectories. The music played, but the user-interface is terrible. There doesn't appear to be any anyway to browse the directories to find the artist/album you want to play. You can skip to the next song and previous song, but you can't fast-forward within the song that you are currently playing. There is no "album skip" or "directory skip" button. I consulted the manual and it did provide one helpful hint - you can type in a number for the song you want to play. So if you have 160 MP3 files on the disc, and you want to play song 143, you don't have to press skip song 142 times - you can just press the "+10" button fourteen times, then press the "3" button. Of course this requires you to know that the song you want to play is the 143rd song on the disc. Long filenames are not supported! The MP3 ID tags do not appear to be supported either! This user interface is so clunky that if MP3 playback is important to you, I strongly suggest that you don't buy this player.

Good player for the price - probably the cheapest player capable of handling one of the DVD recordable media -- but I think I'm going to try and exchange it for store credit.
