SCART -> VGA leads someone was asking seem to be hard to come by. I found one, but it was wired strangely - hopefully some rewiring can fix this.

I did find info to contact sale@kiss-technology.com for purchase of these leads.

Also, a pinout seems to be available at http://www.gooddvdstuff.com/files/index.php?actio ... artVGA.jpg

I found the commercial SCART -> VGA cable that I have (which is wired strangely) from Deltaco distributor.

There seems to be a (possibly working?) lead for 32 EUR at www.tododvd.com - site is in Spanish. =)

I found another lead at http://www.mm-vision.dk/default.asp?action=vis&varenr=9346&menu=dvd -- the site is in Danish =) and 299DKK translates to something like 40 EUR.

Have fun hunting. Looks like easier is to use that diagram (someone should verify that it works..) and buy the parts from your local electronics shop. Won't cost much, but of course there's the soldering blizz..

I know this player is old news now with the new philips player. But after updating to the 2.8.5 firmware this thing plays everything. I've only had problems with 2 movies out of over 50 in my collection. This includes divx 3,4,5 xvid and xvid 1.0.

Delivered from www.scan.co.uk for £150

Very clever player, I updated to the latest firmware 2.6.8 as some Divx's were not working,
now they are fine. I had 1 failure from 8 tested and that was a fast motion Divx3, hopefully the next firmware will sort this out.

I knocked 1 point off as it won't play my udf 1.02 DVD's, I thought it was my bulkpaq green DVD-R Generation 4 disc's so I burn't a disc in iso9660 and they work perfect very smooth no problems at all. It would be good if Kiss could fix the firmware for udf 1.02 disc's.

Jpeg picture viewing is great as is mp3.

Here comes something new i think....

24bit/96Khz audio files on Kiss
DP 450...

Just drop The 24/96 Wave file on a CD/DVD Rom in Nero.

You have to record it first in 24/96.

I work with audio recordings.....
Took a mixdown fron the studio....and to my big suprise it works really fine....!

This player does it all.... almoust, but when it comes to the firmwire it really sucks!!!
Too much bugs.....bugs....bugs...

As owner you will find out in a matter of time.
Put yourself togheter Kiss....
For all owners out there turn power off on the DVD (not Remote) and back on.
(most of the time it works)
And pray that your divx, divx sub, vcd, Svcd, dvd, audio cd or something else Won´t get fu..ed this time.

I Use firmwire 2.8.0.
Here is your way http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=hot_news&v=users

I miss resume on this player.

Last but not least i must say...when it works it´s fine.

I guess it´s easy for me to say (I´ve got three Players.) my philips works best.
Philips YOU ARE BEST

All i can say....buy it!

With the latest firmware does this player support the divx 5.1 codec?

If someone with the latest firmware installed would be as kind as to download and test the latest episode of Naruto available here: http://www.gotwoot.net/series.php?p=info&sec=1

it would make my decision whether or not to purchase this much easier.

I just got my KiSS 450 this christmas. Patched it to 2.74 and then to 2.80 PAL. The first 2.74 patch did not play everything as I expected it to(lots of little annoying things).

But now that I have 2.80 installed everything has worked great so far, I have played vcd's, svcd's, mp3, dvd, divx 3.11 -> 5. And it all works. Everything I've tried has been burned on noname 40x cd's using Nero 5.5.10 and a LiteOn CD-RW burner. I usually use 24x as my burning speed.

Everything I have thrown at this player has played without or with minor problems since the last patch(One time I burned a divx file on a noname cd at 40x and the playback was choppy).

The player is a bit slow to react when using the remote control sometimes.

I am very happy with this player, and especially after the last patch.

!! I strongly recommend this player !!

Hello:

I purchased my Kiss DP-450 in July 2003 and had problems from day one. For a week or so, I received some excellent tech support from a distributor in Delaware. My most recent requests for tech support have been sent to the manufacturer's KISS support hot-line. It is my belief that they have a problem understanding the English language.

I've gone thru the first software installation, the first firmware update and the most recent 2.7.4 version update which does recognize the difference between MPEG and JPEG. The problems, excepting a commercially recorded DVD, is when a disc completes its playback, the system freezes and I have to go thru a routine to manually eject the disc---also happens quite frequently if you want to stop and eject.

The tech support I rec'd from KISS was the manual eject routine I referred to above.

Pic and sound quaility are very good, but this machine has been nothing but trouble.

At the time I purchased this machine, the cost was$261.

A nice player but there are still quite a few firmware bugs. Claims to work with high definition component modes 720p and 1080i but does not. Has VGA output but it won't allow commercial protected dvds to be played via VGA which is stupid. SVCD and possibly VCD won't fast forward or rewind without crashing the player.

In its favour though it seems to give out a higher quality image than the Liteon which is based on the same chip. The Toshiba drive fitted is very good although won't work with protected audio cds it will work with practically all copied media and seems quite quiet.

The remote is a cheapo generic design as I bought an 8 in 1 remote (a cheap one) and its the same remote. The front panel has a row of identical looking buttons and its near impossible to see what does what in subdued light.

I think the best description of this model is eccentric. I prefer it to the Yamada and Liteon but can't help thinking something better will be along soon.

Returned one day later.
- Very very poor DVD image quality (normal, it's a Divx Platine afterall)
- Very very poor DVD-R support, even high quality DVD-R Freez
- 'Blue screen' PC-ish era:) (no responding at all:)
- Poor sound (again normal)
- Divx quality seems ok
- Lot of Divx's freeze

Any way, I'll buy a cheap Divx Platine one day, to go with my JVC True DVD platine :)

Update to my earlier review:

I said before that DivX files would not play - getting stuck after about 15-20 mins play.

I've since managed to produce DivX video that will play on the KiSS 450 player.

First thing to note is that since my previous review, KiSS have produced a new version of their firmware. This can be downloaded from the Internet and should be used to update the player.

Using version 2.7.4 on previously tested DivX video files produced different results from previous firmware. Unfortunately the video picture still freezes, but on average it does this about 5 minutes later than it did before.

However, further experimentation with the configuration settings when producing new DivX video has resulted in material that WILL play without picture freezing.

I have produced a version of 'The Matrix', an example of a plus two hour feature, that fits on a single CD-R disk and will play from end to end. There are some slight audio sync problems towards the end, problems which do not occur when playing via a PC, but it has to said that the result is watchable - a great improvement on something that wouldn't play beyond 20 minutes.

New film was made via VirtualDub recompression configuring DivX v5.0.5 for 2-pass VBR 680 kbps, key frame every 10.

The 'trick' - which, like most techniques once you've discovered them, might now seem obvious, and which no doubt many of you will think 'fancy not knowing that' - is to fully specify the profile settings when configuring the DivX compression settings.

My previous versions already had the 'Home Theatre' profile selected, but this is not enough. You can produce PC playable video without further consideration, but to get KiSS 450 to work properly you should also specify the video dimensions (screen width and height e.g. 512 x 384) and the frame rate (e.g. 25 frames per second). It's possible that one of these settings is more significant than the other, but you're as well to set both.

I hope this helps some of you at least.

And I hope that what I've said will remain true for future versions of KiSS firmware. Note also that there is already another version of the DivX codec out. My tests have been with DivX v5.0.5, and, in view of having something that now works, I'm gonna stick with that for the time being.

I have this player for 1 year now and are very happy of it. I followed all the improvement of the program through firmware update and are really happy for it.
It reads everything i put it in.
divx 3,4,5 , xvid, mp3, mp3 +divx + image,...
Subtitles work really good now.

I have though a small problem with home made dvd. It depends on the film but i have some chapter problem (don't want to go to the selected chapter) with some of them and no problem with others.

The best for me is that you can put on a dvd or cd folders with mp3, photos, films, ... and it reads everything

Another important point is that they really work on it and every firmware brings his improvement and bug correction. that's not allways the other reader.
Firmware can be used with cdrw.

Actually, the image and sound are great.

I give this player a 2 because I can't watch dvd ( real dvd, not homemade ) with subtitles, subtitles and menus are not showed correctly, jerky with lines. I mailed Kiss's support, sent screen picture with the problem but they seem unable to solve this. I'm considering returning this player to the shop and buy another player, not a kiss one... unless they solve the problem... quick !

Too bad, otherwise it's a nice piece, a good evolution, multi-purpose player. For english speaking person who don't need subtitles it's ok... for others... think twice.

Maybe Kiss is going to react !

I bought a KiSS 450-DP DVD player (purchased August 2003). It plays standard DVD format disks fine, including (usually) recordings made on x1 speed DVD-RW - this is handy for testing out renderings without wasting DVD media (note however that x2 speed -RW disks, which would be even more handy, seem to play erratically).

In any case, I wanted a stand-alone player that would also play DivX disks and I'm sorry to say that the player does not do this very well.

It seems to play short DivX clips ok, but struggles on longer films. In particular, I've been testing the player with a feature length movie - a DivX I made of 'The Matrix' +2 hours long.

This plays for about 15 minutes before the picture freezes (using v2.7.0 of KiSS firmware). With the previous version of the firmware it played the film for about 10 minutes before freezing - the difference in time convincing me that the problem is not with the DivX file itself, which plays fine via PC.

KiSS's own documentation suggests that there can be synchronisation issues with variable bitrate recordings if there is too great a gap between the key frames.

I've tried constant bitrate recordings with key frames every 10 frames and this has not made any difference.

I've tried the following combinations, but video still freezes (audio continues unaffected).

CD-R 2hr film VBR 700Kbps (Key frame every 300)
CD-RW 2hr film CBR 700Kbps (Key frame every 10)
CD-RW 1hr film CBR 1200Kbps (Key frame every 10)

Other films e.g. 50 min documentaries DivX v5.0.5 VBR recorded on DVD-R and DVD-RW also have freeze problems. Also, a selection of documentaries on CD-R disks recorded using an earlier version of DivX would play for about 5 minutes before the video would start freezing. - In this case, the picture would stop for a few seconds rather than completely. The video would then resume, having jumped forward to catch up with the unaffected soundtrack, only to similarly freeze again a minute or so later.

I may test some other combinations but results so far are not good.

Short tracks can play okay e.g. some tested music videos were okay, but each track was only about 4 minutes long, problems occur after about 15 minutes on DivX v5.0.5 compressed video.

There has been no response from KiSS support, despite me them sending two emails on the subject.
