It's been a long time since I last used this player, and now I'm going to explain why. This is the first DVD player ever (and hopefully the last aswell) that can't change TV system (NTSC/PAL) according to which ever the source video is in. After a while it gets really frustrating having to go to the settings each time you play different format video, and change to NTSC or PAL accordingly. Of course you can just forget it and play half of your videos stretched to wrong resolution and framerate.
Basically this is the main reason I changed to a different player.
Also, sometimes the player gets really stuck, and you need to disconnect the power cable to get it working again.
The player is region-freeable with a CD image, you might find on the internet. |

Bought this product because I needed a new DVD player and I thought this player could be a good choice with the ethernet/wireless connection, DivX support etc. Also the price at SIBA and ComputerCity (where I bought it) was really good at only 990 SEK (~110 EUR).
Atr first I was really surprised how easy it was to setup. The intstallation was done really quick and I got the streaming from my PC working right away (used a D-link router inbetween the palyer and my PC in DHCP mode). I was easy to search for and share the files on my computer to. Also tried the wireless connection but didn't get it to work. It should be noted that I tried this using a D-link card and I've seen elsewhere that only on brand is supported for this. Don't remember the name thought.
Starting with the positive things the Kiss DP-1500 plays DVD with really good picture quality and sound. I used RGB scart for the picture and the optical digital output for the audio. Nothing to complain about there.
Most DivX and Xvid also played really well, at least when it comes to picture quality. Streaming from the PC worked without problems for movies, music and pictures.
Movies:
* DVDs plays great. Good picture quality and real digital audio ( not possible to adjust volume on the Kiss player i.e. no internal amplification of the signal?)
* Some problems reading some home burned DVDs. All my DVDs worked but some took some time for the player to read. Maybe has to do with the quality of the burning/DVD. This is only my observation.
* Most DivX plays great
* Some of the DivX have problems with the audio. Sometimes it chooses to be deliveried thought the scart to the tv sometimes through to optical out to the amplifiers and sometimes both. I'm not sure why this is happening but it is really frustrating, especially if you want to use your home theatre system at all times. I probably has to do with how the DivX is made but I haven't cared to dig into it deeper. This is only my observation.
* Problems with some subtitles. I haven't digged into it deeper. This is only my observation.
Music:
* MP3s from the PC plays ok. But you can adjust the volume on the Kiss, which affect the output on the speakers even when you're using an optical digital output.
* Looking up your MP3s on the PC is a hazzle. You see your files like in a normal Explorer with folders and everything. If you have a couple of hundred folders it takes time to find your music. I have not found a search function.
* MP3s are displayed with their file names not the tag information.
* Not possible to Fast Forward or Rewind when playing MP3s.
* Normal CDs plays worse than my old Philips DVD (DVD722) making this player a big disappointment. No "sting" in the audio what so ever. Maybe you can't hear this depending on the quality of the amplifier and speakers but with my NAD amplifier and B&W speakers it is evident.
* You can adjust the output volume on the Kiss player when playing normal CDs. This must mean that there is some kind of internal amplification of the signal, maybe also distorting it a bit before it is delivered through the digital output?
* Not possible to program CDs (play order) or more important make MP3 playlists.
Pictures:
*Streaming pictures worked technically, but very slow and it can hardly be used for showing todays 4-8 megapixel pictures. 10-15 seconds to load one image does not pass my standards.
Conclusion:
Great value for money of course, since it actually plays almost everything and the streaming works really good. But if you have a high quality home theatre system and also want your music to be played with good quality this is not the player for you. Also the usability is questionable, navigating takes time and there is really no "extras" what so ever in the software. I usually think the X-box can be frustrating to navigate but it is acutally much better than this Kiss player, both when it comes to speed, general usability and features. I only used this product for one day but I had to return it because of the poor audio quality (DVD excluded) and software. I will continue to use iTunes and stream my audio digitally from my PC to my amplifier instead. My conclusion is that I have to wait for a better mediaplayer to be released, this was not what I hoped for. |

My hopes were really high when I saw this player for sale for 114 Euro. It is supposed to play everything plus the ability to stream from the PC. I really fell for the idea to stream my music files (incl. AAC!) and the odd video from my PC.
I gave up testing this player as it would only play one in two of my existing DVD+Rs, did not play my existing DVD-R DLs and could not keep up with certain Divx as it would freeze, degrade or skip video frames.
Ethernet connection worked with a direct cross cable but failed on my switched LAN (?). On screen display looks great during setup but very poor for normal use (e.g. browsing photo CDs).
Tried upgrading the FW to 2.9.3 but it made no difference. Advice for those who do a FW upgrade: leave the power cord disconnected for 1 minute rather than a standard plugout/plugin.
With my difficulties to play certain media, time spent to get it to stream and poor Kiss support (seems to have died last autumn), I returned the player after 5 days for a cash reimbursement before it was too late! |

Great features but suffers from horrible software. This has greatly been improved by the latest (June 2005) firmware 2.9.3. New features and better stability. Mine has been once in Denmark for repairs (the lcd-display was broken (constantly all characters bright) and the player made a loud high-pitch buzzing sound).
The bundled PC-link software is a first thing to throw away. Use some open source program found from SourceForge. For Windows use FreeKiSS for example and for Linux dp500serv or others.
The WLAN connection is a great feature, allows pretty free mobility around house, but is quite laggy. The video (xvid/divx) streaming is twitching. Via 10/100 Mbps Ethernet no problems. |

So cool to play my favorite movie stored on my PC.
So cool to get radio over the web with shoutcast.
So cool to play DVD, Divx, MP3 burned on DVD-R
But even with latest firmware, the menu sucks sometimes, when you switch functions from Radio to DivX menu. The player freeze et you must unplug the player.
Last thing, the blue led is nice on Wifi card and front panel, but it is too powerfull it wake me up at night, its like a 5 or 10W lamp.
It's very small and smart to move in the house with wifi, but it's much better with 10/100 connection. |

DivX, Xvid, mp3, jpg play back from CD, DVD and via Ethernet are very good. Sub-titles available on DivX,Xvid. However the PC link software is fairly basic but does the job, (no thumbnails, Artist or Album searching or play lists ).
