Let this be a warning to anyone considering buying a KISS DP-1000 DVD player. The KISS company has the out-and-out gall to call this miserable piece of junk a "state of the art" DVD player. There is most definitely something rotten in Denmark and it´s name is KISS. I would have to say that I have never had such a bad piece of gear in my long career in the music/film business.
I finally threw the thing into the garbage where it truly belongs and I bought a Sony DVD player (which I love for its reliablity and strength). This KISS DP-1000 should be on everyones´ most despised list of terrible gear. WHAT A WASTE OF MY TIME AND MY MONEY. KISS MY &%$$· |

When I bought it firmware was 2.9.2. It read mpg and DIVx files, but player crashed with Xvid files and I had to unplug the power cord to reset it. I updated the firmware to 2.9.3 but nothing changed, it still crashed with Xvid files.
I tried also to make it region free as described in http://hijacker.rpc1.org/kiss/. Now in the hidden menu I can see the Region setting, but I can't change it!
Please any ideas? If I can't fix these two issues I'm afraid I will have to return the player to the store.
If these two issues were solved I would give the KISS PS-1000 a 10, but as it is I won't go any higher than 5.

I have had 2 of these DP-1000's and many many problems.
+ At the time i bought it there were no good alternatives in the stores down the street that could handle that much.
+ They still support a lot
- They are very very unstable.
- NO Dual layers i tested several dl+r, dl-r but none worked, I also asked kiss helpdesk if what brand of disks to use. Answer : we do not support dual layer disks. (I asked them if they planned to implement it) answer : NO
We found out that when you simply move the kiss dvd (while connected to tv, electricity) they die simply!
We have had 2 of these dp-1000's. The first one was unstable (when you do some operations in a very short period the player freezes), one day we had to move everything a bit to make space to change wires behind the tv. Simply lifting, placing it aside caused to player to die (still in guarantee, toke 3 weeks to repair). Lateron it died again. Thinking this was just a bad monday morning dvd player we bought a new one. Wich has died past week by moving it. To all who wants to buy a kiss : Place it and leave it whatever you do : DON't Move them they are more fragile then cracked glass!!!!!!! |

With Firmware 2.9.3, no problem. It can read DVD+RW. In precedent note, I said there was problems, but the probleme was with the Pioneer DVR-109 burner (Firmware 1.17).
I've tried new DVD-R DL, but it can't read it. No problem with DVD+R DL (MKM 001 / Ritek D01 / CMC Mag D01) and all single layer tried are ok.
For MP3 burned on a DVD+RW (long filenames, with UDF 1.02), the player did not saw the disc.
I've not tried with new DivX, as I don't use DivX anymore.
So, good player for standard reading.

I have tried two discs.
1x Datasafe ritek g04 DVD-R - Xvid with AC3 - random freezing and crashes player.
1x tuff-disk DVD-R - DivX with mp3 - freeze and crashes player at certain places.
Not good, checked and I have the DVS drive.
Latest firmware 2.9.2 installed.
Any ideas? Movies play fine on my Mac and my friends DivX DVD Player (Tangent D400)
Think this may be going back to the shop :(

I haven't any problems with this player! I have the last firmware 2.9.1 ! I think, I am a lucking, because the problem with kiss players is only one! The people who have the Thosbiha driver have lot's of problems reading cd/dvd divx/xvid etc.. The people who haven't the Thosbiha driver normally don't have any problem!
So if you can see what driver have your kiss player you are ok! Just do not buy any kiss with Thosbiha driver and you have a 8 on 10 (rate) lolol, if you buy it you have 4 on 10 (rate)

No problem anymore since I upgrade the firmware to 2.9.1 (and burning this firmware on a CD-R, not RW, at 1x rate!).
It plays my DVD-R (TDK / TTG02), DVD+R (RiData / Ritek R02), and DVD+R9 (Verbatim / MKM 001), but can't read my DVD+RW (Philips / Ritek 004). I've tried with another philips media and it worked fine (I don't know their media code).
Well, it's a fine player, evan if I had some problems with the 2.8.5 and 2.9.0 firmwares. For DVD+RW, maybe my medias are not so good, evan if my computer reader Pioneer DVD-305S reads them. |

I'm a little disappointed with kiss technologies.
First, being already known for about half a month that drives with the Toshiba dvd-rom DR-1802 don’t work with firmware 2.9.0 , I can’t understand how we still find this player in stores.
If you buy one of these dvd, you simply can´t watch: dvd-video, divx, svcd, and probably more that I haven’t tested.
After a few minutes of playback, the movie stop and you have to unplug the power cord to unlock the player.
In kiss website they don’t write a word about it.
Fortunately, I’ve found a forum where someone gave directions on how to solve (partly) this problem:

After this downgrade, I was able to watch my divx movies.
Of course, since at pixmania.com I have a 15 days trial, if kiss don’t release a new firmware version to solve this problem, I’ll probably return this player and get another from another maker.

When purchased, the Firmware was dated back in March 2004. I had hangups when playing MP3 CDs, but MP3 DVDs seemed Ok. DVD Video, either commercial or home authored on DVD+R seemed!? Ok.
I downloaded the latest Firmware, dated 8th December 2004 and that seems to have cured all problems I was having with CD or DVD MP3 playing. The long file and folder names work a treat. However, now I am getting hang ups on home authored DVD+R or DVD+RW videos. The same DVDs play completely without problems on computers or my Yamaha player. I can eject the DVD, but on reloading, get the message "Unsupported disc - The disc you inserted does not contain any playable content", the front panel says "Bad Disk". I need to power off/on to play that or any other DVD again. This also happens with a commercial DVD! |

Great mp3 support. Long filenames, very slick navigation, good sound, even on an old tv.
Problems with DivX. The same disk you insert now can play well for some time, until it finds a clip it doesn't like and the screen goes black. But take out the disk and insert it again and often it won't play ANYTHING... even the clips it played a minute ago. I keep having to reset (ie pull the plug) the machine, and that's bothering me. Somehow I feel it's not a compatibility problem, but some kind of memory/buffer/cache problem. Can anyone help with this?

It works well with a lot of formats, but have some serious problems with original DVD's.
It freezes for a moment 10-12 times in a normal movie, which is very irritating.
This is a software problem in all the their models, the KISS-company explained to me, and they don't seem to have any solution in the near future.
In fact KISS have known this error for some years now.
For this reason I can't recommend this player or any other KISS models, before the company takes this problem seriously.

| Just got this player. Since here was said you could make the player regionfree and to save me money, i didn't make the player regionfree. Now i try the eject,clear,276...but i don't see any REGION field...only 2 fields named SCART OFF that i can navigate through. It says firmware v.2.8.4. I just bought this player to play divx/xvid movies. The other formats i can play in my regionfree Pioneer player. Can someone please tell me asap if Divx/Xvid movies can be region-protected? Do i still need to make my player region-free? Thanks in advance. |

I have this model also (for the guy who said that he burns divx's to dvd and it works :) thx for that). its a gr8 machine. had probs with vcd/svcd playback at first, upgraded the firmware, worked fine since.
bad point about this player is the ability to play divx/xvid/mpeg4 with ogg vorbis sound, this does not work :(. and also if ur divx/xvid/mpeg4 is a high video bitrate, like 200kbps, it wont play either :(.
But thats about it, its a gr8 buy for the price, im well happy with it....SasArchiver |

I write this comment since I think the average user rating is unfair for this player. Kiss DP-1000 plays every media I tried (Verbatim, TDK, Princo, Emtec...). I burn divxs on DVD-R and DVD+R and work fine, I can even combine the formats in one DVD or CD media and it recognizes the format between audio, video or images when I insert the media.
I only had one problem in 2 months time since I got it: After playing DVD-R with only divx (it can play mpeg and divx on the same media too), I inserted a DVD-Video and showed only the cursor, not the background images. I had to reset it just by unpluggin and plugging again the power cord and everything worked fine after that. I am still using firmware 2.8.0. I don't expect more from a company that sells a product and commits to improve it over time (now plays WMA sound in avi files). Perhaps one day it could play ogm files!
I think this is a great buy - I am amazed of well thought the product is. Watch for prices going down. |

Most of DivX and Mpeg files work great but I already experienced problems with some Xvid videos, the player says it isn't the right codec but when i retried, it worked. On some others (not only XviD but also DivX), it seems the player read only keyframes or made the video blocky which was quite annoying so I had to watch these movies on my PC. :/
Another problem I have is with NSC DVDs, I watch a lot of japanese cartoons so I need to activate the subtitles but even if the picture has to be interpolated on my PAL TV which is normal, the player also interpolates the subs ! It tries to add lines that are not necessary making the reading difficult so I use another player for NTSC DVDs. I asked KiSS about this and it seems that I was the only one that reported this issue. Though PAL DVDs work perfectly.
Overall, I hope the upcoming firmwares are going to fix these bugs, this player will be perfect when it will be able to read 100% of my DivX videos but there is no such player :'(, happily Kiss oten updates their players' firmwares so I hope the best for the future ;)
To davide from Italy : it seems that the player can't read any video file with WMA audio even with the new firmware, I have also this problem with videos with DivX Audio (which is a hack of the WMA codec). You can capture your video using a WMA codec and then recompress it using a MP3 codec. |

Seems to play all media. Nice search fearue for mpeg4 divx/xvid etc where the FF upto x48 works like on a normal DVd rather than the jump forward 2 minutes like other Mpeg4 player like the Liteon 2001.
On screen stuff is very slick, the built is good, remote the best I've seen on a mpeg4 player.
Whole deal is very european in design, which I like!
I could not decide on which player to get the Yamada 6100, Kiss 1000, or the Liteon 2001. SO I bought all of them.
The Kiss is nice except for the naff blue LEDS why it needs 4 I do not know!

Good quality for audio (DD 5.1 + DTS with S/PDIF) & video (RGB); more features: component and progressive scan.
It plays everything:
- VCD/SVCD
- DiVX 3.11/4/5
- XiVD
- JPEG - MP3
- MPEG-1 & MPEG-2 without authoriting (only with some DVD bulks & Nero, freeze with 2.8.0 last firmware)
It display complete information for DiVX and MP3 idtags, and also play forward/reverse (but the seeking it's very slow). Also the loading is slow.
