This player will play DVD+R discs. I use Memorex discs ATM, and it reads them all just fine. However I can not get it to recognize any DVD+RW discs (tried Memorex and Imation). I've tried the bitset utility and no difference.

I am very happy with this JVC player, which I've had since about March. I originally had the XV-SA65B (see my prior review under that player), but sold it to a friend in order to upgrade to this one's DVD-Audio feature. Suffice it to say, all the great compatibility I found with the *65 exists on the *75. Since I no longer own DVD+RW (thank God!), I can't say for certain that this unit does that (but I assume so, since I got it to work--although not perfectly--on the *65). But this unit plays SVCD (at the 1850bps limitaton) on cheap CDR's, and home-brewed DVD on Verbatim, TDK, etc, and even el-cheapO Hypermedia (a Micro Center special, if you have a store near you). It's a little picky about DVD-RW media (no to Memorex, yes to Verbatim). Avoid trying to copy a DVDR with Prassi PrimoDVD. It must reformat somehow and make it not 100% compliant. My menu shows, but the videos can't be selected. Audio quality is BEYOND superb. The onboard DTS an DD decoder is so good that I use it INSTEAD of the ones in my Kenwood receiver. (Mind you, that means I'm preferring the sound through the 6-channel audio-out to that of the optical out: either says that the JVC is REALLY good, or that my Kenwood is REALLY crappy --probably a little of both.) Lastly, DVD-Audio must be heard to be believed. You will wonder why you "suffered" all those years with CD, and laugh wryly when you recall all the hype over the years that "CD is the closest you will ever get to the master tape". DVD-A is truly revolutionary and worth the extra investment.

I have the JVC XV-SA75GD. What an awesome player. The Operator Manual says that it doesn't play DVD-Rs, but it does!!! I learned the hard way though. I recently purchased a Pioneer A04 DVD-R/W and DVD-R burner. I followed the guides from VCDHelp.com, Doom9.org and Derrow. I pretty much followed the guides for Creating a DVD with just the main movie. I created a DVD and burned it with Nero 5.5.7.8(I believe), and to my disappointment, the DVD would not play. So I took the disc to different stores and tried different DVD Players and some played the DVD I created. So I brokedown and bought and Apex 1200 for $55 just to play DVD-Rs & R/Ws(See Apex 1200 post). Then after reading some Forum Posts, I learned that some DVD Players are very picky with the way DVDs are formatted, and that some people had problems because of Nero. I have a copy of RecordNow Max, and followed the guide by Derrow on Burning a DVD with RecordNow Max. I created another DVD, stuck it in, and it worked. 5 DVD-Rs later and no problems. I give it a 9 out of 10 because I couldn't get it to play a DVD-R/Ws.

Mine is the XV-SA70BK, which is the black colored version of the SA75GD, which is the same thing only in gold color. I've only played homemade VCDs on it, which I made with Nero5, after converting them with TMPGEnc on cheapo CompUSA brand CD-Rs. They work fine and look good. I can pause, fast-forward at multiple speeds, and see the menus I created for the VCD. Interestly, I made copies of them for my brother who tried to play them on his Panasonic RV31U-K player and a Sony(DVP-NS300?)player and they wouldn't read the CD-Rs, so I have to believe that this DVD player does a better than average job of being able to read CD-Rs.
I also played MP3s that I burned onto the same cheapo CompUSA CD-Rs and the player read those to, with exceptions. It looks like either it's unable to read more than a certain number of tracks or it's unable to read tracks that were burned in more than one session. It sees and plays MP3s, but not all of them that were on the CD-R. I haven't gotten the chance to figure if it's the number or session yet. |

This players does NOT play DVD-RW as others have reported for the 70. I tried both Verbatim and Memorex DVD-RWs, neither worked.

By reading this forum, I think I am in the right place. I purchased the XV-SA75GD. This player is awsome. I played an SVCD @ 1850 avg. bitrate and the audio @ 192 using DVD2SVCD and Daemon-Tools w/ Nero to burn. Picture and sound are incredible. It also played a crappy VCD. I was using a Sony DVP-NS400D which is an outstanding player, but I couldn't get the SVCD to play properly. The audio seemed to always be out of synch. Although @ this sight you can find how to make a svcd play on the sony, it just didn't work properly for me. The only cdr's I've tried w/the JVC are the Verbatin Datalife Plus 80 min. Only one downfall I have seen with the JVC player, I am not quite experienced enough with resizing so I wanted to use the zoom function. It works great, with the exception you are stuck with a small zoom window that cannot be removed. I called JVC and they said the window cannot be removed!:( So much for the perefect player. Other than that I would definitely recommend it.

Beautiful! My other player (a Philips) was nice because it did SVCD, but it didn't allow fast forwarding through it, or stopping/resuming, only pausing. This one allows fast forwarding and rewind at 2x, 5x, 20x, and 60x with dvd/vcd/svcd. It does DVD audio, plays DTS discs (DTS backups too, which many others don't do), has it's own on-board DTS decoder. This was important for me, because I have an expensive high-end audio system and didn't want to buy another just for the Dolby-Digital/5.1 capability. It allows both digital outputs and analog (RCA) outputs for the 5.1 stuff. MP3's come up on-screen with full titles out to about 45 characters, none of that chopped off stuff with other players (if they used a smaller font they could fit more characters). Folders come up as MP3 groups, each group can contain up to 100 mp3's. It would be nice if they had some way to program it to play certain mp3's in a playlist, but that's asking a lot from an otherwise awesome player. Audio quality is BEAUTIFUL on my $10,000+ home audio system. I ought to know, I returned 3 different brands of players to the store the same day before keeping this one. Audio is very important to me. It plays VCD's with a little more clarity than other players I've seen, too. That's important because VCD, as we all know, isn't the greatest to begin with.

I've got the gray one : JVC XV-SA72SL (PAL version)
it's the same as the SA70 or the SA75.
Quality is very nice..
The Only thing it doesn't play is a miniDVD image
i've tested from this site (NTSC miniDVD).
And play's only one folder with MP3 files, not the hole disc, and only on the analog outputs.

This unit shares a few of the same Model numbers. It is the same as the XV-SA75BK And XV-SA75GD But the unit I own witch is also the same unit is the XV-SA70BK I belive what JVC did is they made a mistake, It was supposed to be XV-SA70BK for the black unit and XV-SA75GD for teh Gold unit. Either way this is a great unit, It has Progessive Scan, Plays MP3's and DVD Audio, here are the specs for that. It will support up to 192khz/24Bit, meaning it can handle (48/96/192khz and 44.1/88.2/176.4khz)Also it can handle 16/20/24 Bits. Hope this info help your purchase.

The model number was mis-reported initially. It should be XV-SA70BK. It is the same as the XV-SA75GD, just a different color. Sorry!
