I've had this XV-S65GD for three and a half years. Recently I have been unable to play the Wide Screen version of "Man Of The House". The player has no problem with the standard version on the disc and no problem with all special features. My JVC XV-S300 played the Wide Screen version without a problem. So, I got another copy of the DVD from the store and the same thing happened. I suspect a FIRMWARE update is needed for the SONY Encryption on that is present on the DVD. I have contacted the JVC company and they took my note. Said check back now and then on the web site for a FIRMWARE update. He did not sound promissing.

Have this player for about 5 years now, was very happy til I ran into problem last year with burned DVD's bought on ebay & not able to read 95% burned DVD+RWs...Plus 70% OLD VCDs purchased back in 1995 failed to play properly (loss of color, sound out of sync.......)

For some strange reasons, it read a few burned Memorex 2.4X DVD+RWs copied (using Micro Advantage DVD writer with DVD copy ) from the original DVD+RW recorded from Lite-On LW-5005 DVD recorder it failed to read before......

I saw a comment for Phillips DVD+RW, will give it a try. In the mean time, if anyone knows the hack code for this player, pls post it here....Thanks!!!

VCD OK (old VCDs with low bitrate dont work properly)
SVCD OK
DVD+R Yes but not all (screen stutters and freezes)
(OK with : Kyhpermedia +R 4x/Verbatim 4x/Sony 8x)
DVD-R Yes but not all
DVD+RW -picky (2 out of 10 memoreX 2.4X worked)

"...the brightness on SOME SVCDs will drop about 10 minutes into the disc."

To fix.. turn off the built in screen saver modes.. (There are two and both are not suspended when playing VCD/SVCD disks) and the problem with the darkness after 10 mins goes away. This problem does not occur with DVD's.

I have had this DVD player since the day it came out (I work for a retailer). I have been nothing but pleased with the performance of this machine. It played my DVD+Rs (memorex) with no problem.

A very HUGE added bonus which I wasn't expecting is that it will play PAL encoded stuff. That is to say it will play file encoded at 25 fps. It is not region free. I tried a DVD+R, and an SVCD on CD-R (both encoded in the PAL 25 fps) and it recognized and played both flawlessly.

Overall I give this player a high rating and highly recommend it. I just sold it and bought a Harman Kardon DVD101 so check out my forthcoming review of that unit.

This player has played everything I've thrown at it in the 18 months I've had it. Imation 700 MB CDR, Memorex 700 MB black CDR, Memorex 700 MB CD/RW, and others.

My only complaint is the same Scott report in Feb... the brightness on SOME SVCDs will drop about 10 minutes into the disc. He's definitely not alone. I usually just turn up the brightness on the TV. If anyone has an explanation, I'd certainly love to hear it too.

This dvd player is great EXCEPT for one problem ive had. Nobody else has posted this so i thought it might only be me, but than i bought another one the 75 or something and same problem. While playing SOME svcds it goes from bright to dark!! if you touch any button it goes back to bright again. It does it about every 10 minutes. Only on some SVCDs but I dont know why. Anyone else had this problem? Really ruins a movie. Someone let me know if theyve had the same problems and what it could be.

Have had this player for a year now. It's superb for commercial DVD's. Excellent picture and sound playback.

Where it's weak is in it's ability to playback DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW. I have an HP200i DVD+ burner and a Sony DRU500a dual-format burner. Although it will play my home-created discs, the playback quality is spotty at best.

Using good quality blank DVD-R, +R, -RW and +RW media (TDK, Maxell, Verbatim, HP, Sony, Phillips, Ritek, Imation, Memorex and others), I have yet to find a brand of disk that this player likes. I have an 8000 CBR disk that's 54 minutes long with PCM audio. This disk will play flawlessly on most players with superb picture and sound quality. The XV-S65 stutters about every 3-5 minutes. The picture will go through momentary freezes where the audio continues to play and then the image/sound return to sync. It takes an inordinate amount of time to read a burned disk before playback starts, with the worst playback occurring during the first 15 minutes of disk play.

In addition, the player absolutely bombs out on burned DVD's using VBR or MPEG Layer II audio. The picture will totally freeze up to a minute and then skip ahead. MPEG Layer II audio playback produces a high pitched "beep" every 45 seconds to a minute, rendering the DVD unwatchable in this player.

As I said, for commercial DVD's it's a champ. It also handles SVCD's, VCD's and home photo VCD's quite well. As a set-top player for use with burned DVD's is where it seriously loses points for usablility from me.

Was bitterly disappointed with the lack of DVD+RW support on this machine since it played everything else I threw at it. However, I just got a new DVD+R drive (NEC 1100) and all +R disks have performed flawlessly. Great machine! Only reason it didn't get a 10 is that it cannot play MP3's burned on a DVD+R disk and when it does play MP3 it goes through the analog outputs instead of the digital output.

I wanted the owners of the DVD player model JVC XV-S65GD to know that it can play 4X recordable TDK+R media. Many of the DVD burners out there are becoming compatible to record on 4X +R media. I have been making back up copies of my own DVD movies on the 4X TDK +R media and it truly works great on the JVC XV-S65GD DVD player. The DVD player however can not read +RW media as I have tried the Imation model and it has failed.

I bought this player for playing SVCD's as a second gen. player and also for its prog. scanning feature.

However, I recently got into the DVD+R/+RW format and noticed that it plays DVD+R's very well, but it refused to play my HP DVD+RW disc that I made first (I have bought a Philips standalone DVD+R/+RW 985 recorder) and I dismissed it off as being DVD+RW unfriendly.

The only reason why I am posting this report is to add a discovery -- This unit plays DVD+RW discs, but is seems to be pickey..

The Phillips DVD+RW disc I got with my Phillips set top recorder *plays* just fine in this player while it still refuses to play the HP disc...

So it is not comletely DVD+RW unfriendly, its just picky!

Re: SVCD's, it does have a bitrate problem, it gives choppy playback when bitrates are high and you can look at the other reports to get the bitrate right...

Plays VCD's, MP3 etc. just fine! Prog scan feature is good as well...

This player sux for VCD's! I have had it for 6 months now and I am now looking for a better one. The load time is the slowest I have ever seen. Secondly and most importantly everybody is giving this thing good marks for SVCD and XVCD and this was the site I used to determine to buy it based on user comments. Should have read between the lines! If you record or download SVCD's you will hate this player. This WAS the reason why I bought it in the first place. It jitters and stutters like a leaf in the wind when you play them recorded at the maximum acceptable bit rate for SVCD or XVCD! I'm sorry but if a VCD of any kind is recorded within it's acceptable limits it should play! I have had to recode WAY TOO MANY VCD's to lower the bitrate to play properly and that's just not right! Not to mention you start to get scenes in movies that have too low a bitrate to support the movie scene when you finally hit the bitrate (2200 or lower) that this JVC likes so then the picture suffers but oh no jitters. Save yourself the grief ignore this player if you are into SVCD or XVCD. As a DVD player though it is great BUT then if you want digital MP3's forget it once again because you will not get digital output to work. Just my 2cents!

Stretches 16:9-tagged standard SVCDs back to 4:3 on playback, leading to interlacing artifacts. Also would not autostart SVCD. Otherwise worked great.

I recently purchased the HP DVD200i DVD+R/+RW recorder and have had no problems reading DVD+R's (3 different media brands and mode 1 & 2) in the XV-S65GD. I have no doubt that any +R media written to from this drive will work in the JVC. It has not read any +RW to date (2 different media types). But this is indicated in the HP manaual, DVD+RW is not recommended for playback in most DVD-ROM and "set-top" players.

I just bought a new DVD player (JVC XV-S65GD) and I'm trying to play SVCDs on it. I looked up that player on VCDHelp and found that the bitrate of the video should be about 1800 bps in order to get non-choppy output. Of course, all my current SVCDs are 2500 bps. I saw that I should use TMPEG to fix this problem by converting the bitrates to a lower rate. Well, I have downloaded TMPEG and have no idea how to do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

First off, i had an older DVD player, that did not even play vcd's, and some DVD's i rented! I bought this one, and am AMAZED at the DVD playback quality, its outstanding!
One feature i really love, is the Zoom, you can zome from 1/8 x to 1024 x !!!! Now i'm sure your saying, why would you zoom out, and how. Well, basically, it makes your screen have black around the entire thing.
This is great because i had a 2 hour avi video, that was only 121 megs in size, the quality stunk, i put it onto 2 vcd's, and i played them, lets just say that the quality was very unimpressive, but i zoomed out, to 1/4 x, and the screen was smaller, but better quality from 6 feet away (30 inch TV) - if you hate watching crappy quailty vcd's, but have alot of them, this is a really nice feature.

The load is also faster then what i was used to with my older dvd player!
For how much i payed, i think its a great deal.
Also, its a gold DVD player, and even though it may look really wierd in the store, if you have an oak stained wood stand for your tv, (any stain thats not very very dark) ~ this player will match very nicely!

An excellent DVD player with a really good image quality. It's hooked to my Panasonic 47'' HDTV and I can tell you that the progressive scan make a huge difference. Nice remote and lot of feature (even an useless x1024 zoom!). And very usefull, it has its own color/tint/gamma/brightness/contrast settings. So you don't have to change your settings between 480p (prog. scan) and 480i (cable TV).

Plays VCD with no problem. But I confirm the info about SVCD above 1850 average bitrate.

DVD:

This a good quality DvD player. Lots of nice features. I have nothing but good thing to says when playing commercial bought DvD`s

VCD:

Works like a charm. (I dont like regular vcd, but this unit play them very well)

XVCD:

Made several XVCD (min: 250, avg: 1200, max 2400) and they all work perfectly

SVCD:

Just made a SVCD from the movie Bounce (DvD rip) with DVD2SVCD with 2 audio tracks. (min: 200, avg 1785, max 2400). It work perfectly and I was able to swap the audio tracks on the fly except on the last chapter.

Good unit unless you already have some SVCD with avg bitrate above 1850. If not, just make the new ones with those settings: DVD2SVCD settings, put max birate at 2400 and max average bitrate to 1850. no big deal here since even at 1785 avg, it was hard to tell the difference between the original DvD and the SVCD.
