CVD? $40 over 1 year 8 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: I bought this player on eBay well over a year ago, prior to having a DVD burner. I found it was very picky about SVCDs above a certain bitrate thus the 8 rating. I eventually found a good region free play all player, and set this one in my closet. Well...a week ago I decided to check how it did with DVD-R compatability, and was quite amazed to discover the player will indeed play PAL DVD on a NTSC TV just so long as they are copied region free!!! The picture and sound quality blow the Cyberhome 300S out of the water. I'd highly recommend this player if you find it

N/A 7 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: Still haven't had a good playback with any SVCD (NTSC) on any media. I'm going to try the SVCD-VCD hack on a test item in about an hour, but I think I tried this months ago and had no luck. This is mainly a note saying that contrary to other reports, I have had NO PROBLEMS playing back DVD-RW discs burned from a Pioneer A05 on a Mac using iDVD 2, on Pioneer 2X media, burned at 2X. The Pioneer discs are the only ones I've purchased (one came with the burner, and I bought a 5-pack), so YMMV on different brands of rewriteable media.

CVD? $250 N/A 6 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: My main point for this device was the real converting of NTSC or PAL into the other format. Today the output-switch is on "NTSC" and when I move back to europe I will change it to "PAL". I never need to mind on what DVD (PAL/NTSC & Region) I use. this works perfectly. All DVD-R and all DVD+R media I have tried have worked correctly. Non of the DVD-RW or DVD+RW media I have tried worked so far. Some VCD and SVCD have troubles even runing OK on other player.

CVD? $200 N/A 7 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: Finally got a DVD-R/RW burner (Pioneer A05). Tested burned DVDs from my Mac (OS X 10.2.5, burner installed internal on IDE) using 4X DVD-R media from Princo. Playback seems good so far, but I've heard people have read problems with Princo discs at the deep end of playback; all my projects are under 30 minutes long... Did not read Pioneer-branded DVD-RW disc... Can "somewhat" play SVCD, but some better than others. Often, you get skipping during playback, every two seconds or so, and not regularly (like there's a media defect and the head's hitting it every time around the disc), it's random within that two-second period. I'll try the SVCD Header trick to make it think it's playing a VCD 2.0 disc tonight.

CVD? $175 N/A 7 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename Comments: I mainly wanted to post a report for people who produce DVD's (videographers). I have produced two different DVD-R movies. One I took the raw AVI and deinterlaced it in Virtual Dub and Mpeg'd it with TMPGEnc and authored it in Pinnacle Impression Pro. At around 10-12 min into the 20 min production, it starts to chunk. Sometimes when the player has been on and running for awhile, it won't play at all. The one I produced second I didn't denterlace the AVI and authored/mpeg'd it with Ulead DVD Workshop. It plays perfectly. I think that there is an issue with deinterlacing video for DVD playback but I don't know for sure. I came to this conclusion from running a sample clip that was deinterlaced and authored in Ulead and it started to do the same chuncking, just not as bad.

CVD? $200 N/A 7 of 10 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: Even though Memorex's compatibility site lists that only DVD+R media works on this unit, I've played DVD-R discs burned on a PC using Nero 5.5, works fine. Movie was put together using Ulead software (don't know which, friend gave it to me to play). MP3 playback is sketchy, but seems to work fine in CBR songs, VBR seem unplayable. ID3 tag idents work, but on-screen only makes MP3 playback a pain... Menu use on standard US DVDs is problematic, as sometimes the menus get "mixed up", and you have to exit and re-enter the menu for a cleaned up pic (did this to me today on School House Rocks and LOTR [Fellowship] Special Edition). Menu building for VCDs is hit-and-miss. Once, I was unable to get any type of menu to play back, burned using Nero 5.0; later, after trying Nero 5.5.9.?, I was able to get a menu made and two video clips added, but in playback on this unit, the menu worked, the first clip played, but the second clip would not playback smoothly (3 frames per sec). I'll be trying out SVCD support next week, and will try burning from my Mac (OS X Jaguar, Toast 5.1.4) to test the menu building for both VCD and SVCD. I don't have a DVD burner yet, as I've been waiting patiently for test DVDs in all media formats for my JVC before making a final decision... looks like the Sony will be it, as it's able to do all formats! :)
