I love this player. I have had it for 2 years now and it plays almost every (S)VCD I throw at it, even ones with bitrates over 2100. I have run across a few that don't play for some reason but it may have something to do with the encoding process.
It also plays every DVD-R and DVD+R that I put in as well, however I am having difficulties finding RW discs that will play. I have tried Optodisc DVD-RW as well as HP and Verbatim DVD+RW discs with no luck yet. I will try the Fujifilm discs like someone suggested in their comments, if I can find them. If anyone else knows of another brand that they have gotten to work please let us know! -RW or +RW it doesn't matter... just want to find a RW brand that will play in the player!! |

| Great machine... although as previously stated it has a bit of trouble playing SVCD @ > 2100 bit rate. Plays DVD+r r/w media (Verbatim) recorded with a Sony DW-U10A, havent tried -r -rw yet but dont anticipate any problems. |

This is a great progressive scan player for standard dvd's. However, I just got an optorite dd0203 writer and so far the only thing this player will handle is dvd-r. None of the rw discs I burned with nero udf/1.02, dvd video, instant copy pdi, etc. would play. I tried
memorex dvd-rw
memorex dvd+rw
fuji dvd+rw
sony dvd-rw
legacy dvd-rw
Some of these however played ok on my pioneer dv343, but alas, it is not progressive scan. I hear many dvd players can't handle rw media. |

I have a question in regards to VCD. I have tried to burn vcds but the dvd player does not read them. Is there a specific type of cdr I need, with a specific color finish in the background or should I try burning the vcd at the lowest speed possible?
Thank you |

I have burnt a few Ritek 1x DVD-R's using my Pioneer A05/105 DVD burner and my JVC XV-S60 won't play them. It gives an "ERROR" on the JVC front led display.
Is this just me or have others experienced this too? |

| I have had this player for a year and a half ... I has an excellent picture when used in progressive mode with my Toshiba Widescreen HDTV. I have used SVCD with up to 2100 bitrate using both CD-R and CD-RW, plays fine. I use both Memorex and Verbatim media, haven't had a problem with either. This is an excellent high quality player and is somewhat user friendly when used with a JVC A/V receiver and a connectiomn that JVC calls A/V Compulink, it automates the process of loading a DVD, SVCD, or MP3 disc and selects the correct source on the receiver. Perfect for wives that just quite can't get it ... :-) |

Cheap Princo 1x DvD-R worked. Disk was burn with Pioneer A05 using InstantCD+DvD.
On the other hand, the Pioneer DvD-RW didnt work. I am going to try to burn with different software since it seem to matter. I need to find a -RW disk that works so I can make tests |

This is the best player I have owned so far.
It plays every single VCD, SVCD I made beautifully.
However, if you are making SVCD with chapters and menus you might find this play a bit disappointed.
Only ten chapters are selectible - numbering from 1 to 10 (use 0 on your remote). You can't use the Next button to skip to next chapter, only work in Menu Mode - strange! |

DVD:
This a good quality DvD player. Lots of nice features. I have nothing but good thing to says when playing commercial bought DvD`s
VCD:
Works like a charm. (I dont like regular vcd, but this unit play them very well)
XVCD:
Made several XVCD (min: 250, avg: 1200, max 2400) and they all work perfectly
SVCD:
Just made a SVCD from the movie Bounce (DvD rip) with DVD2SVCD with 2 audio tracks. (min: 200, avg 1785, max 2400). It work perfectly and I was able to swap the audio tracks on the fly except on the last chapter.
Good unit unless you already have some SVCD with avg bitrate above 1850. If not, just make the new ones with those settings: DVD2SVCD settings, put max birate at 2400 and max average bitrate to 1850. no big deal here since even at 1785 avg, it was hard to tell the difference between the original DvD and the SVCD.
Subtitles dont work.

This player deserved a 6/10 because it fails to play SVCD at high bitrates. I tried the LOTR SVCD @ 2496 bitrate, and it was extremely jerky. As for DVD playback, it is one of the best out there, quality wise. MP3s play well, and display full names.

I was thinking about getting this player, but the manual says "The unit does not output a digital audio signal from DIGITAL OUT when playing back an MP3 disc"
I only use the Optical Digital Cable and SVideo cable from a DVD Player to my receiver. Are they saying that I would have to connect analog (RCA) cables in order to hear a MP3 recorded disk because it will not be sent through the Optical Cable? Aren't MP3s digital? Strange.
Also the manual states, you cannot playback MP3 tracks in the desired (programmed) or random order. Bummer.

See page 41--Notes
One good thing is that this player shows the full song titles in the menu unlike the 8 character limit on other dvd players. |

| Excellent DVD player. I tried before the Pioneer DV440 and the Hitachi 415U and none of them could play properly SVCDs captured with my Dazzle DVCII, so I had to return them. This one plays them flawlessly. I also like the MP3 full name file list, the other players display only 8 characters. Great player, I will keep it. It can't read data CDs burnt with Windows XP, it could be that Microsoft doesn't respect the ISO 9660 standard (the same problem with the Pioneer). No problem if you burn them with Nero. |
