| By far the best dvd player that plays everthing!!! I use this player for vcd's, mp3's, cd-r, cd-rw, and of course dvd's. After working in an electronics store for months, I narrowed down my search to a few. This player just kept coming up on top! It also has a very low repair record and I haven't had any problmes...yet! |

| Skips MP3's with ID3V2 tags. SVCD's works well with any brands I've tried. Cannot make it display entire picture (chops off the sides) when displayed on 4:3 TV set no matter which 16:9 setting is used. Excellent picture quality but if I want to see the entire picture, I use my Pioneer DV-353. |

| if you burn svcd, make sure burn speed is not above 12x for the best color, sharpness, and no pausing. sometime a reboot helps in pausing. if you are getting blocks slow the record speed down. this has occured on mine only above 24x burn speed. it seems as if you use a 2550 constant bitrate (svcd) then it must be a 12x burn on overburned cds too. if its only vcd quality 32x (1150cbr)it will work without pausing. these speeds are done with nero burn program. the absolute cheapest disks were used, 7.99 for 200 from office depot. these could be overburned to 840 or a little more. |

| Gorgeous picture! Is there a software/remote region hack? You can buy the player from various sites with region coding hacked but I believe this is a hardware fix. Plays DVD-SVCDs made from my DTIVO video. |

This is a great player for the most part.
It will play SVCD 2500kbps(CBR) or lower,
if you select the default 2520kbps form tmpgenc, then
the player will jerk the video alittle.
I mostly use svcds for home videos converted from my mini-dv camcorder, it's a great format. gives about 35-40 minutes per CD (cbr 2450)... DVDfactory works really well for making the svcds with titles, you can also do background music on the title page. My previous dvd player(panasonic) never displayed the title page, it just went straight to the movie.
This plays all my dvds well and works with CD-r, CD-RW.
mp3 works ok. this will output mp3 via the optical/coax(digital) out unlike some other players which will only do mp3 thru the analog RCA jack out.
it's pretty slim unit and looks pretty nice. I like the fact that it has both types of digital audio out, I ran out of digital inputs on my reciever(optical type) so I use the coax one.(I share the DVD audio in with my 6disc cd changer(optical)/DVD(coax)...
A few things I don't like:
The main unit doesn't have enough buttons compared to the toshiba, which gives you the joypad so if you can't find the remote on, with the toshiba, you can still do alot. but with the jvc, you really need to have the remote... and the remote kind of sucks. The keys are not intuatively placed, so many small buttons you really have to memorize the layout, granted some of the main keys glow in the dark, but that isn't enough. JVC really needs to look at Sony for remote control styling. Seriously the users interact with the DVD player 90% via the remote, and if the remote sucks, then that hampers the relationship between man and machine. :) The CD tray feels really flimsy. it's not very sturdy looking, I feat my kid will play with it when I'm not watching and break it.
A note on progressive scan: if you don't have a tv with component inputs + the ability to use 480P, and you use a progressive scan DVD player, then you are not using progressive scan. progressive scan doesn't work with the S-Video out... This may sound obvious to some of us, but there are alot of ignorant people out there, and I just wanted to clarify to them so they won't waste money buying a progressive scan player, only to hook it up to a 20 inch tv with composite in. :) Also be sure that the progressive scan dvd player you buy is truly a progressive scan, alot of the first generation DVD with progressive scan are nothing more then a line doubler and not truly progressive scan units!

| I recently purchased the JVC-502SL Model DVD Player. I bought Pinnacle Expression Software to capture and burn SVCD's. However, I found that the JVC player will not play the discs. I downloaded and tried the trial version of WinDVD Creator and the SVCD's played fine. If anyone reads this and knows a way to burn SVCD's successfully with the Pinnacle Expression 2.0 software and this model JVC player, please post a response. Thanks. |

Much better then my old panasonic.
Plays SVCD fine but high burn speed 40/32 will sometimes introduce blocky errors near the end of the disc 24/16 speed burning produces much better results. |

After reading all the great reviews about this player I went out and bought one but am disappointed in that this player does not handle non-standard higher than normal bitrate SVCDs that I download from the Newsgroups such as alt.binaries.svcd. My Pioneer 353 plays non standard higher bitrate SVCDs better than does this unit. I guess I will return it to the store.
Note: It plays standard compliant SVCDs just fine. |

| This is my third Player tried. Apex 1600 would not play my SVCD. I know that the player no longer supports VCD but I tried it any way (no work). The next one was a JVC XV-S500BK it did not play my SVCD or even load them. VCD had blocking and poor audio. I like JVC’s for some reason, so I tried a JVC XV-S502SL only because it had good reviews on this site. (Thanks to everyone for this site). I paid $149.00 at Circuit City, the sales person said that it would go on sale just before Xmas, but would not reveal the price. Sales person informed me if I find a better price I would receive the difference. Found that all the other disk that would not play, played fine. (Finally ho ho ho). VCD1.1, VCD 2.0, SVCD, DVD beautiful video and sound. So far can’t find a problem. Glad I found this site. Buffalo, New York. |

It does slideshows from jpegs burned onto a CDR. But the rendering is VERY SLOW for any picture bigger than 640x480. My 2048x1536 (3.2 Mega pixels) took over 1 minute.
Worst of all, it renders each picture in blocks starting at the top left (i.e. the picture transitions are non existent).
Don't get this DVD player if you want JPG slide show capabilities.

Those who have reported problems playing back VCD and SVCD have only their CDR blanks to blame.
The cheap 50-pack spindles that I normally use for computer data don't work well in this player - you get corrupt blocks in the video and blips in the audio. Most of those cheap spindles, sold under many names, are made by a taiwanese company called GIGASTORAGE (yes, in caps). In addition to issues with this player, these blanks have had problems in some stereo systems and discmans that I've tried, especially on the inner tracks. I purchased some TDK blanks, and all my problems were solved: flawless playback. The GIGASTORAGE discs are $0.20/piece for a reason.

I have had 2 of these fine players for a couple of months now, and I just had to respond to some of the posts in this thread. First off, I would like to confirm that this player does not play XSVCD format, or at least not without freezing up and stuttering a lot throughout the movie. Also, I would just like to point out that the XV-S502BK IS NOT the same as the XL model, only a different color. The silver version has higher disk sample reading rates as well as having progressive scan and optical sound output, which the black one does not.
I have had a lot of problems getting the player to play back SVCDs that I have made recently. I use NERO 55917 and I have a Compaq PII 450 with 256 RAM and a Yamaha 20x10x40 cd burner. I don't encode my own VCDs (I use usenet), but I have noticed that this player has started freezing up and showing lots of artifacts on all the SVCDs I have made lately. The ones I made before (from months ago) are still fine, but now all of my recent burns skip a lot at the beginning and at the end of the movies, but sometimes if I shut down the player and turn it back on then there are less artifacts than before. (still there though.) All other disks (DVD + VCD) work and look great. I have been using branded Memorex CD-Rs 50 packs for a while and I always burn at 8x or lower. (Like I said, my old burns using the same brand CD-Rs are fine.) I tried Maxell CD-Rs but had the same problem with SVCD. When I play the SVCDs on my PC with PowerDVD they look perfect. I don't know if this is because my burner is wearing out from making so many disks or if the JVC is slowly breaking a little bit. An SVCD that I burned today looked a bit better on the JVC that I don't use as often downstairs than on my upstairs one. Anyways I thought I'd let everyone know. |

I've tested this DVD player heavily, everything that I would use it for it works for. I have tossed in lots of different DVD+r media and it seems to handle it just fine, I burned a LOT of anime SVCD to DVD using SpruceUp and authored them with menu's and all, also used VCD the same way and they love this DVD player. The MP3 menu is one of the easiest to use I have come accross in the 10's of DVD Players I've tested.
I will warn anyone who wants to use the JPEG picture viewing, because it does work, but sometimes it takes a long time for the picture to load, so if you are using the CD for JUST the purpose of playback on the TV, you may want to chop down the resolution to use your time more efficiently. All in all an awesome player, I am extremely happy with it. |

Have had it for 2 days and it has played everything I thru at it. Replaced a Pioneer 353 with this one since Pioneer unit didn't seem to "get along" with my Sanyo flat-screen tv. I tried 2 different 353 units and could not get rid of a dark "shadowy band" that kept appearing on DVD play.
This JVC showed no shadowing at all with the same DVD's. Plays VCD, SVCD both from CD-R & CD-RW beautifully ! Even resumes play on SVCD's which the Pioneer did not. Also easily switches tracks. Also shows new track title screen which Pioneer did not.
So far, I am all around MUCH happier with this unit vs. my Pioneer DV-353.
Would recommend it to anyone looking for a good solid player for VCD & SVCD's. |

What a nice player, too bad I had to return it. Picture quality was great. My only interest is VCD and SVCD on cheap CDR so I didn't bother to check anything else out.
It would not play any of my 8x burned cheapo CDRs. Played 4x cheapo CDR or CDRW fine.
With several thousand in my library, I turned it back for yet another Apex AD1200 that is still in VCD compatibility. Bummer.
Picking up a Pioneer is still on my ToDo list.

| Just wanted to add that this player has a built-in PAL to NTSC converter, so it will play the many PAL SVCDs floating around out there...(Most all the "new release" SVCD files available on the Net are recorded in PAL and will play back in Black and White (at best) without the converter.) |

| I have used Verbatim, Meritline, Memorex, and Pioneer DVD-R and DVD-RW media using Pinnacle Impression DVD-SE for authoring and burned with Nero 5.5.9.0 and a Pioneer DVR-A04. Every one has worked so far. This unit has played almost every SVCD experiment that I have tried before getting the Pioneer DVD burner. Great picture and seems very stable. |
