From the moment I plugged it in and popped in the two towers this player started rigth up. No complaints yet except that the damn zoom feature is nice but stays on the screen.

That was a stupid design flaw

Have two. First played DVD-R and DVD-RW with no problems. Second showed lots of macroblocking although fine on store disks. Took to service center under warranty. Required new laser pickup. Now works as good as other XV-S500. Used with CompUSA DVD-R/RW media and Fugi DVD-R/RW media. No problems.

I have to agree with a lot of the other posts about the dvd-r not playing all the way through, but I have come to the decision that its all because of the media. I've been buying cheap white label media from online and almost every one of them stop at about 90%. I switched to CompUSA dvd-r media and it now it plays all the way.

BTW, Comp DVD-r media is usually about $2 to $3.50 a disk, but I found they sell their 2 packs for 1.99... less than a dollar each! A 5 pack is 9.99! 10 pack for 19.99... someone wasn't doing the math when they priced them but its the same price online and in the store.

I reccomend this machine. Just beware of the media you use. If you have problems, switch media and the probs will go away.

Subtitle error shows up occasionally but it always stays off for me if I switch it off using the subtitle button on the remote.

Not only has this little guy played everything i dropped in it, but i got it for $89! Pretty impressive in my opinion since it plays everything i can throw in there, and it is progressive scan! I got it at Best Buy, it is a close out model and the price keeps dropping, ask for a supervisor and you might even be able to get it cheaper.

So far (only had it for a month) plays DVD-R perfectly, as well as all CD-R and CD-RWs I put in, including some real low-end and banged up discs, and mini-cd. From the other user reviews, it seems like it's hit or miss with this model, but mine seems to be a hit. I don't know if they updated their firmware or hardware at one point or something. So far plays NTSC and PAL perfectly on my NTSC TV (using 480i on component video). Mine is modified to play all-region by the vendor I bought it from -- I don't know if this would affect anything else. I don't understand the frustration people seem to have on the zoom issue (the zoomx2 etc remains displayed on the screen) is this because for some formats you would have to zoom the image for the entire playback to get fullscreen? If so, then yes, this would be annoying, but for regualr DVD formatted movies I only use the zoom to catch details in a few places, for which it works perfectly. My only complaints would be that it won't play DVD-audio or SACD, neither of which I own but it would bite if one of those formats caught on and this wouldn't play it.

I have backup copy DVD+R that have a hard time playing on some other machines, but this bad boy plays every single one perfectly!!! I beleive there may be a few varities of this player based on where you purchase. I tried this same model at Best Buy with my back up DVD and it failed to play some. Tried and bought at Soundtrack and as stated before plays EVERYTHING!!! DVD+R/RW. MP3 Playback good sound quality, unable to fast forward or rewind and no random play in MP3 mode. Very good player, Progressive scan for $125.00 cant be beat in this price range. Very sleek looking player and nice GUI. Highly recommend!!

I am a rather newbie but what I tested was VCD-s and SVCD-s made on a Compusa CD-R-s. I do not have any Nero or Adaptec Platinum-s etc. So Just doing BIn and CUE with vcdeasy, then mounting a virtual CD with virtual CD and copying from a virtual CD to a Real CD-R. I have very old CD-Recordable. So with those very old and literally free technologies this guy managed to play Everything!!!! I was impressed. I tested the same SVCD and VCD-s on other DVD-players within $200 range and NONE of them could play it!! BEWARE- many report here are obsolete... SOme DVD manufacturers quit support for VCD-s. JVC in opposite, supports them at least for now.

So who likes SVCD-s and VCD-s this player is a great buy.

In addition, it has a progressive scan and componenet output.

The only thing I did not give 10 was obvious lack of extensive testing.

One last thing: price at Best Buy was $170.

I've got around 50 vcd and svcd movies which I burned before I even owned a standalone. Some are on good media, while others were on cheapo blank media that even some of my PCs cdrom drives had problems reading.. anyhow the JVC s500 plays 'em all pretty much flawlessly! Maybe I got lucky with media but everyting seems fine. I've tried princo, pine, gigastorage, pacific digital, and some no name brands and it recognizes each one fine.

I've had a few glitches though.. with some movies, towards teh end of the CD (it's almost always within the last 5mins) it starts macro blocking. I'm not sure if this is a heat issue or not but I doubt it, because if I put in the 2nd CD of a flick (after the end of the 1st CD started giving macro blocks) it plays fine. However, 98% of every SVCD/VCD I've played play perfectly!

Only other issue is that mp3 file browsing is sloooow! moving through folders takes maybe 4 seconds inbetween each folder to switch. Also, I wish you could browse the contents of different folders while it was playing but i guess since it can't cache the file list this is understandable. This being said, however, I have not come across an mp3 that didn't play perfectly! MP3s range from 128 to 256kbit, and I have both VBR and CBR files. Sound quality is excellent (running just using RCA cables to a stereo technics amp, and a pair of paradigm Monitor 5 speakers.

I bought this player last month and have had no problems with it. Although the only thing that I would say that has annoyed me with it is that it didn’t like my no name blank cdrs (same color on both sides). But im thinking that the media’s themselves weren’t that good because my computer could barely read them. So I went out and bought some Fuji Film media and it plays it without a problem.

I also love the look of the player.

This player has to many problems to list. The main problem I have with it is that it won't play a DVD-r all the way through. Once it warms up it will start macro pixeling and it freezes up. I have to let it cool down for awhile in order to resume. It is also well ventilated, so that isn't the problem. Good luck to you if you buy this model.

I had converted all of our home video to DVD...burned with HP200 recorder and Sonic software. I have last year's 7-disc JVC player. The disks work fine (DVD+R) on that machine. I bought two of the S500 machines for Christmas presents and neither played the same disks. The menu would boot up...sometimes you'd get a couple minutes of video, then it would freeze up. Tried everything with JVC tech support (very difficult to reach) and no luck. J and R has been kind enough to take them back even though waiting on JVC tech support extended me past the 30-day window.

Hello Folks.. I can agree with everything the review says below my post. I bought a 50pack of 80min Memorex 48x and have been burning all my svcds on those. After i burned them, i deleted the movies off my hard drive. BOY WAS THAT A MISTAKE!! LOL, please, do not use Memorex Cd-r's with this DVD Player. The image goes to hell, gets all scrambled and the audio gets real sharp with screeches.

So... after I had to download my movies all over again, i burned them on 80min Verbatim Cd-r and they work perfectly. It's all up to the media with this bad boy. Other than that small issue, and having the zoom box fixed on the screen, this is a very good dvd player for someone who burns movies.

I just thought i'd post this because I wish i knew this info before I bought it (and my cds)

I've had this player for about 6 months, and I was having similar problems as other people reported, when playing an SVCD.I tried eliminate any variables and came to conclusion that this DVD likes specific CD-R.
I used the special software-CD Identifier- to distinguish between "good" and "bad" CD-R.
When I tested Fuji, TDK, Sony, I had under Recording layer: Dye(Long strategy,eg:Cyanine,Azo etc.)
These Svcd played perfectly every time.
I tested cheap brand of CD-R SmartBuy,Memorex, Prime etc. and under Recording layer: I had Dye(Short strategy:eg.Phthalocyanine).Svcd burnt on these discs sometimes shows problem with video and audio.
When the same movie was recorded on the "good" CD-Rs
problem disappeared.

Plays MP3 on CD-R & CD-RW well.
Plays standard, offshelf DVD's excellently.
--------------------------------------------------------
Tried 10 disks, VCD and SVCD. All disks were rejected
with an "error" and ejected until a "random" disk just
started to work. I retried the "error" disk again, and
they worked. Power cycled the unit and once again,
they all failed with "error" until a "random" disk
worked ... then they all worked.

So we started watching the SVCD (CD-R) after tricking
the player into reading it.

40 min in, a few pixel squares appear
50 min in, a lot of pixel squares appear
60 min in, video is jerking, audio is bad
70 min in, video is almost frozen, no audio

Repeat on Phillips 724 with PERFECT PLAYBACK on same
disks. PC (Linux/Xine) also plays back perfectly.

Returned to BESTBUY for a refund. Bought Phillips 724
from COMPUSA and LOVE it.

This player will only play a maximum of 150 MP3 files or JPEG pictures in a folder. I have no idea why they chose such an arbitrary number for a limitation, but this player is going right back to Best Buy. I have many MP3 CD's with 180 songs all in the root directory, and all my other players, including another DVD player from 2 years ago, plays all of the songs just fine. This 150-song limitation is totally unacceptable.

My old player allowed me to enter the track number directly, instead of having to press a "+10" button repeatedly to get to a high track.

Also, this player forces you to select JPEG or MP3 PRIOR to inserting a disc with those types of files. It won't let you change it on the fly, or automatically play one or the other.

On some folders, it will fail to play the last track or picture in them. Another firmware bug.

Overall, this player has too many limitations and bugs to be worth keeping. I will not keep a player that does less than my previous one did.

This machine is driving me crazy, as others have reported I am having trouble with the subtitles coming on automatically then staying on. This has happened with the movie Windtalkers, and Triple X. I am going to try to take it back b/c I paid too much money for something that does not work right.

Anyway, I like JVC stuff and own a lot of it...but looks like I will be owning a different DVD player (if the store will take it back). I would not recommend this DVD player as it does not do what it should do well...that is play DVDs.

I've had this player for about 3 months, and I was having similiar problems when playing an SVCD for about 15 minutes or so it would get pixelated, don't know why but it would, then it would spin down and eject the cd on SOME of my SVCD's, not all. Tried burning at 2 X to 40X, same thing. Then... all of a sudden I got a new TV with 720p inputs, and BANG, it will play everything now, even the .20 cent CD-R's! No pixelization or anything like that.

Great player for the price, excellent quality, low noise, and MP3 support!

Defenitely recommend

Very good unit.
Plays all my CDs, DVDs, sVCDs and VCDs.
Media used - well, from no-name to memorex black (my favorite).
My Sony only plays RWs from Memorex with good picture.
Mostly write SVCDs for it, so speed is x2 with CBR 1700 and up.
Did anybody tried 5.1 SVCDs to play (multy channel audio support)?
I converted 3/2 Dolby surrond WAV, no issue here.
I am about to try it.

I just got this player. It has played everything I have put in it (VCD, SVCD, DVD, MP3). One problem though that I need some HELP with. When I play a SVCD, after about 5 minutes into the movie, it starts getting pixilated and the audio makes a popping noice. I noticed there were a few others that had this problem. I tried cleaning the CD but that did not help. The SVCD was made with Nero 5.5. Any advise? Thanks!

the JVC displays Zoomx2 ect. on the screen whenever the zoom is in use. this has to be the WORST idea i've ever seen in a dvd feature. i called JVC to inquire about how to rid my t.v. screen of the large zoom alert in the corner and was assured by them that
was always going to be on the screen when using the zoom function....thats so you don't forget its zoomed i was told. lol,i told them to fire whomever thought that idea up. back to the store with the JVC that had the fulltime onscreen zoom. i give it a score of 1 just because of the ridiculous zoom onscreen feature.

Comments:
This is the best player in it's price range. On 1 16X9 tv it will scale the video on nonanamorphic movies, only other player to do that is the very expensive Panasonic model. All JVC's do this I beleive.

And this does not have the chroma bug!

Excellent.
