I've had this unit for over a year and it will play anything that I throw at it. I have used brand name media as well as generic. My DVD's have been burned using X copy, Instant Copy, Studio 8, Creator 6, all on a Sony 510 DVD burner. I've used DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW and all work great.

My only comment is that if you put it in an enclosed cabinet, it will heat up and cause skipping.

All in all a great DVD player.

This player works fine with DVD-R. I used Memorex. I didn't do a full test, just wanted to counter the other reports that have DVD-R lined out. See the other reports about VCD / SVCD issues

I bought this basic player mainly because I wanted a DVD player that could play VCD's and SVCD's. It played all my VCD's flawlessly. On SVCD's, there was occasional freezing and skipping on some parts. However, this did not happen very often. I burned my SVCD's using Nero at 4x speed. The picture quality on this player is great. My DVD's, SVCD's and VCD's loaded up very quickly. The remote is intuitive and can be also programmed to control your TV. The outputs on this player allow you to handle most of your home theater needs. It has Component Video Outs, Composite Video (RCA jacks), Optical Digital (Toslink) and Coaxial Digital audio connections.

I'm giving this player a score of 7 because of the following negatives:

1) It occasionally freezes on SVCD's

2) It also froze during one part of the Princess Bride DVD. I had to turn it off, eject the DVD and reinsert it before it finally could go past the part.

3) It seems that when the player is on for a length of time, the DVD tray doesn't open when the button is pushed. I had to turn the player off and wait a few minutes (perhaps to cool the unit) before it would finally respond to my eject command.

4) The zoom only has one mode. This is ok if you are only interested in greatly magnifying the picture to check out some detail. But it would have been nice if there were several different magnification steps (2x, 4x, 8x, etc).

Overall, I would recommend this unit if you are looking for a basic, cheap player to play not only DVD's, but also your VCD's and SVCD's. The picture is fantastic, there are plenty of hookup options, and the player loads quickly and plays quietly. I bought my player at Vanns.com for only $90, no shipping or tax.

Comments:
Plays VCD's and SVCD's, burned to Memorex Black CD-R media using Nero, very well. Those disks that I have burned from .bin/.cue that included menus, have worked great too.

It will play XSVCD's, but it skipped and stuttered during action and musical type sequences. Maybe I will try burning at a different rate to see if that helps.

Have had NO problems playing regular DVD's.

Overall, a great player for the $100 it cost.

Comments:
My experience so far is only fair. The unit I bought in a rush, after finding out my Sony unit didn't do SVCD which I wanted to try. I've made 30 VCD and had no problems. My main source is Divx files, which I convert via VirtDub and Tmpgenc. As a newbie, I'm still unsure if some of the problems are me or the player. I've had a few come out EXTREMELY good, and yet have had a few with jumpy playback. I've run repeated test creations and have not really been happy at all with my success. The DVD portion of this unit seems just fine, Component out works excellent as does its Digital audio out (Coax). My MP3 playbacks have been excellent, tho the folder structure needed is the old '1deep' structure. For the money it seems real good, but I really wish the menu stuff worked correctly. Also, my photoVCD seems to be larger than the TV screen, the edges are cut off from the images I used. The playback on my PC shows the slide edges-but the TV playback doesn't. I use a Sony 38" thats not digital but I'm not sure yet if its the TV or the DVD player yet. Sorry for the crappy writeup.
