Hi,

As for DVD+RW, everyone I have tried works : Memorex, Mitsumi, Sony, Imation, EMTEC and Verbatim. So I don't understand why people say it doesn't work!

This unit is not supposed to be able to play any writable DVD's of any format. However, I have managed to play DVD-R's (many brands), DVD-RW's (Memorex), and DVD+R's(Maxell).
If the software has anything to do with it, they where all written with DVD X Copy, using an LG GSA-4040B Burner.

VCD'S play well when using silver disks, otherwise will have problems with stuttering.

Tried Memorex DVD-R (Light Blue) works fine.
Tried Memorex DVD-RW (Dark Blue) no chance.

Burned ISO of DVD-5 Movie using DVD Decrypter, it was a simple two step process.

I love it for playing VCDs, however the lack of being able to play SVCDs has got me shopping around again.

Comments:
VCD - Play VCD very well on CD-R and CD-RW. Has a bit of a problem with blue bottom CDs. Whant i meean is that it can play them very well but some times the image is choppy. But no problem with CD with a grey-blue bottom and the green one too.

Played a DVD-r in it. With no problem.

Played a DVD-RW in it. The Image got choppy after 1 minutes and a half for about 12 seconds. After that it was pretty good.

Bottom line: don't use DVDs or CDs with a blue bottom.

Comments:
I own this DVD because I won it on a radio station contest.

It plays DVD allright. I find it a bit slow to boot up to the first image though.

I tried VCDs, 1 out of 2 works perfectly, the other one jumps, have mosaic patterns appearing and the image freezes every few seconds. I took non-working VCD and tried it on an APEX AD-1500 and it worked perfectly so I guess my JVC DVD player is the problem.

Now, I detected a problem but I can't find any word on this even by searching on the web or on usenet. That is the player seems to overheat sometimes. I can reproduce this problem by keeping the DVD player powered up for the night, the next morning, the player will freeze and will not diplay the JVC screen, all will be black on the TV. It happened to me 3 or 4 times after reading one DVD, over 20 times after waatching 2 movies. The only solution to that is to power off the player for 5 to 10 minutes and all will be ok after this.

I surely don't recommend this player to anyone. You can easily get much more quality for your money!

I have this DVD player, though I haven't tried to do everything with it. The reason I bought this was cuz it can FFW pretty fast -- up to 60x if that speed rating means anything. The speedy FFW feature is useful for quickly skipping past questionable scenes in those so-called "children's" movies (like some of those Disney movies).

Here it is straight from the manual about Non-playable discs:
Non-playable discs:
DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD AUDIO, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-ROM, PHOTO CD, CD-EXTRA, CD-G, CD-TEXT

I have tested all of these personally.DVD-R works great!DVD+RW works great!CD-R and CD-RW VCDs play but it is true that CD-R can be choppy. It does not play SVCD. I have not tested any other formats.I use no-brand DVD-R on a Pioneer DVR-A03 and they play fine.I use HP DVD+RW on an HP DVD-Writer 100i and they play fine. I tried a Memorex DVD-RW on my Pioneer and had no luck.I hope this is helpful.Happy Burning!
