I been using this dvd player over a year now. As far I know, I threw , CD-R,CD-RW,DVD -/+RW. Everything worked.Although there are some ups and down for this dvd player. If you burn a vcd or svcd more than 40X then its going to glitch in between the movies, like 1 minute in the whole movie. So try to burn it under 24X. And for DVD-RW. I use memorex DVD -/+RW. Some body posted that DVD+RW wasn't working on this dvd player. It will work if you open/close couple of times, It takes sometime to recoznie the dvd+rw. Where as for dvd-rw they don't need the same treatment. But once they recoznize they play flawlessly. I bought these dvd-rw yesterday and experimenting on them. I will update on this dvd player in few weeks.

I love this player for VCD and SVCD. I have rendered many myself and downloaded others without any problem, I have used extremely cheap media and they all play fine, as long as I wipe em clean with a lint free cloth prior to loading (that is the cheapest ones, my Imations work fine regardless)
Having trouble gettings DVD-R to play on it, however. My first attempts have resulted in 3 half decent DVDs and 7 coasters!!! I have the new LG4120b and am not having any problems burning the discs at all. The discs play fine on my PC and PS2 but the KVC XVS300 sometimes doesn't like 'em. The only one that plays flawlessly is a copy I did with DVDShrink. The SVCD2DVD that I made will play the fist part fine, the second part pixelates and the third one won't even load, just goes back to the grey JVC screen. Now, mind you, I did get some crappy DVD-R media to begin with, but I am a little worried about what media to buy next. Don't wanna go out and spend 40-50 dollars on some blanks that will be equally bad. What blank media works the best with this player? I am thinking of going to get some Ritek 8x -Rs, anyone know if they are worth the money? |

| This is pretty good DVD player, I've had mine for over a year now and haven't had any issues, just stay away from Imation CD's, they don't work well in this or any other DVD player I've tried them in. |

| I've been fairly happy with this machine playing VCD and SVCD recorded on Verbatim media but I recently tried Imation and had problems with every CD freezing and then stopping in the JVC. I don't necessarily blame the JVC as much as I blame the media, the same Imation CD's freeze and stop in other DVD players, so from now on I'm sticking to Verbatim with this player. |

| I have had this player for almost a year. I went looking for a new one when my Apex started choking on my svcds. I spent alot of time researching, and based on the budget I had this was the best bang for my buck. I really didn't care about dvd+-r playback, because at the time I didn't have a dvd burner. I have never had a problem with any of the vcds / svcds I have thrown at it. There are occasions where there is skippy video or griding audio, but this is always because of the files or cheap crappy media. Crap in, crap out. Any vcds / svcds / and now dvds that I author myself have always worked perfectly. Factory dvds using the component output are crystal clear. I will keep this one until it dies, or I break down and get an mpg4 player :) |

I've had this player for several months now. Had quite a time after encoding video. The SVCD's would skip, audio was off, etc. After sending out several e-mails to those that have this exact player, I thought the skipping problem was cured, not! I finally tried Nero Express, was using NTI & Roxio Video for a while. After I used DVD2SVCD on one of my own DVD's I used Nero to burn both mpeg's and they turned out perfectly. No hesitation, no skipping. Finally the right combination.

In my experience once the player 'recognises' the media it plays flawlessly. The problem I'm experiencing is specifically with SVCDs. The player has serious issues recognising SVCDs. Instead I get the 'ERROR' code on the screen. A coupla reloads of the disk and it'll usually figure out what it is but it gets tedious reloading SVCD time and time again to get it to recognise. Sometimes it'll be ten or more minutes before I can get the thing to load. BUT once its loaded it plays flawlessly.
VCD fast forward feature isn't reliable, when fast forwarding VCDs specifically (not SVCDs) it'll get lost and lockup.
Although plays CDR burnt MP3 media, for what ever reason it doesn't recognise DVDR burnt MP3 media.
Plays SVCD video burned to DVD+/-R using DVDLAB flawlessly. Thats a new thing I've been playing with and am very happy.
DVD media I have found no issues whatsoever. |

hey everyone
i dont know what all these complainers have been smoking... or if they just have some defective media/players...
VCD's are perfect, mp3s are perfect, jpg cds are perfect, I make my own SVCD's, they play fine (sometimes with a few glitches in the video, but audio is fine)... although it can be picky at times and you have to open and close it once or twice for it to read it.
DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW play absolutely flawlessly... no stutters, no glitches... i use memorex DVD+R/RW all the time with no problems. Although occassionally you have to open and close it a couple of times for it recognize the dvd.
this is an excellent player for the price, well worth it... and its perfect for making your own DVDs to watch.
any questions? feel free to email me: virtual_worm@hotmail.com and make the subject "dvd player".
enjoy!

i bought this dvd player to play vcds and svcds mainly. i was looking for the apex 1500 in walmart but all they had was the 1100w and they said they never had the 1500 one though i saw it there on xmas and it was on their website in the begining of august. oh well. checking circuit city that time showed they had the aped 1200 for 59$ but i heard this one is having lots of probs so i decided to look for something else. i saw this dvd player in a friend's house (they got it for free from sears after buying a huge tv). i asked how much was that they said 129$.
i decided to check circuit city again and i saw this jvc one for 109.99$. yes, they just lowered the prices due to the new models which are suppose to be out soon for xmas (already??). they said they just lowered teh prices from 129$ and before it was 109$. so i decided to buy it. after making sure its doing mp3s as well. i bought this one and came back to my friend's home.
now, since i live out of the usa i had to wait for 3 weeks till i could test it. my biggest fear was the frequencty problem (60mhz in the usa while its 50mhz here in israel). i was scared for nothing. only had to buy an adapter for the electricity (110v to 220v).
my tv and vcr are multi region.
first we tried it on a diff tv we got a black and white screen. then i tried it on my tv works perfectly. tried audio cds, works fine. tried vcds, svcds, works perfectly. even watched harry potter dvd. again, works perfectly. havent tried mp3s yet but i will soon. all my cds are usually cheap ones but brand ones as i dont like the no-lable cds. my cds are memorex and some office depot brand with lable. works perfect. i use nero and i burn my stuff up to 16x of speed.
only prob i had after playing a vcd the machine froze and i had to reboot it by turning it off and on again (i saw someone else here had this prob thats how i knew how to fix it). but besides that, im very pleased as the main reason i bought this player is for vcds and svcds i create with nero. since my tv and vcr are multi region i have no problems with it, and my dvds are region 1 anywayz cause i buy them in the usa (cheaper!).
before i tried this i saw a couple of bad comments (the recent ones in here) and i thought oh man im screwed. but after testing this i can say if u want a brand name that plays everything, go for it. almost like apex, but a well known brand.
here in israel the cheapest dvd player is 150$ (everything here is multi region by default) and if u want something that will play both vcds and svcds, u wont find anything in less then 200$. so i guess i got a good deal.
again, highly recomended.
thanks for reading

Finally found a system that works on burning with this unit. I have burned 3 movies in a row now without any problems since doing it this way.
First of all I have a Sony DRU 510A Burner
I'm using Memorex +R media
1. Rip the movie with "DVDSHRINK 3.0Beta5.exe"
The program gives the movie a once over analysis and then you press the "backup" button to start the rip. If you want to reduce the size of the file you may be able to by unchecking the boxes you don't need, like languages you don't speak or menus etc.
2. Once the movie has been ripped, go find the location you saved it in. It will be a "VIDEO_TS" folder.
3. The program I use to burn the VIDEO_TS folder is RecordNow DX v4.60 I followed this tutorial:
http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/recordnowmax.htm
4. It is REALLY important that you burn the VIDEO_TS FOLDER do not select the files individually, burn the whole folder.
5. Also the VIDEO_TS folder must be in CAPS or the video player won't be able to read it. If you have Win98SE like me then you will need to enable "all caps" in your start/folder options/view.
Good Luck! |

Hi! I'm from Sweden and I bought this DVD a year ago. I've read most of these comments about this player and I don't know what you're doin' wrong? Every SVCD i burned from .mpg or .bin works, even those mpg's I've encoded myself, and ALL DVDs I've bought works aswell.
One problem with this player is probably not so uncommon.... the fact that if you burn movies with to high bitrate(over 2500 bps) it might be some faults in the playback such as hacking or something.
If you have problems with playing SVCD, try a lower burning speed or a better burning program.
Nero isn't that good you know! I use VCD Easy, but it uses Nero ASPI. You can make chapters and with this program selectable subs really works.
(They don't with just Nero, because it can't recognize them yet).
I think that the speed of the forward and backwards scan rocks! (x60) :)

Don't buy this for playing disks you write yourself. Flakey playback with burned disks of any type, excluding audio disks. Stick with a cheap 'noname' player for this. Nice player for a home theatre system where you will only be playing factory made disks.
VCD and SVCD have problems playing on burned disks. Picture breakups, locks up player. OK with pre-recorded disks. (if you can find them)
CDRW VCD and SVCD are usually unplayable...see DVD-RW...
DVD-R Most will play ok, sometimes menu will not work.
DVD-RW Forget it. Player will usually spin the disk trying to read and then give you an error. (The disks play fine in everything else) Trying over and over ejecting and inserting the disks sometimes gets it to play..once the disk is mounted it will usually play ok, but in some cases will play the disk in a 'fast forward' sort of fashion..skipping frames and getting jerky audio, while flashing the colon on the display on the front as if it was in search mode. Perhaps my unit is defective.
Picture and audio preference controls a nice feature
Well designed remote control.
Good MP3 playback but lacks ability to view names of files. |

I bought it to play SVCD. But actually it plays VCD and DVD I tried without any problems, but definitely NOT SVCD.
SVCD encoded with TMPGEnc and DVD2SVCD. Nero or VCDEasy was used for burning.
Used different types of disks: Memorex, TDK, Verbatim.
After a few minutes of playing picture starts freezing, while audio is OK. My friends, who also purchased this model, also complain about SVCD functionality.
Plays VCD in PAL/NTSC, SVCD (starts playing) in PAL/NTSC, DVD only NTSC.
No problems with VCD/DVD.

| I really should give it a rating of 6 because of the fact that it plays almost anything but not everything plays well. You need to use recordable media with a very dark substrate, like cd-rw's for instance, for video and super video cd's. It plays audio perfectly. I don't think that it has a whole lot of memory in its buffer, because it has problems with freezing and jumping sometimes if it doesn't see data it likes. My parents have the new GE player, and it's much smoother, probably due to the fact that it has more of a buffer to handle the lag in reading data from a disc. Otherwise a good player. |

| Have had this player since Christmas now and have been shoving any type of SVCD into it and it plays it all. Any of you that whine about skipping freezing stuff like that use a bitrate calculator and burn at 8x |

| I bought this player because it says it played svcds...It does, no problems at all, using generic blank cds..and so far not a flicker, burn at 16x, if you have a prob try a slower burn speed....great player for the price...Highly recommend it |
