Plays most xvid/divx but not all. In general, however, AVIs are too dark and there is no way to increase the gamma - at times, this is a show-stopper. Many of the features available for DVD video aren't available for xvid/divx - stop/resume for example. Support therefore seems to be an after-thought.
I've never had it play a dvd+r all the way through without hickups - they get serious near the end of the disk and prevent the movie from completing; the unit "crashes". To be fair, I've only tried 2 media types. Dvd-r seems to work fine, however, so I've copied my movies to that media format. |

Like some others that have commented, I have had issues with some of the hacked xvid codecs. Occasionally get audio sync issues with divx files, but have not had any issues with DVD's (burned or retail).
I love the memory card slots since this allows me to show off my digital camera pictures on my bigscreen without having to have people crowd around the digital camera or squeeze into my small home office to view them on a pc.
I was also able to change the background on this player with no problems. I read a review earlier that someone tried this 3 times with 3 seperate players and basically horked the player to the point of having to return it. I did not have this problem.
All in all, great investment. Love the fact that I can play divx files on it, this has saved me untold amounts of time to convert to SVCD or DVD. |

| Question here people. I have had this player about 3 months now and burned quite a few dvds and everything seems to work fine. I like to create dvds with multiple videos that I convert to divx format and have had no trouble so far. HOWEVER..... I just made a bunch of home movies ( holidays, birthdays etc) in divx format. a total of 79 avi clips. Here's the catch. they will all fit on the dvd but they don't all show up on the dvd player(they show up fine on my pc though.) When I put all 79 on the root of the dvd... only 62 show up on the jvc player. When I split them up into 2 groups, I see 31 files per group. The rest just randomly disappear... in other words some B's might be missing in the folders and some G's etc no pattern. However when the files were in the root directory, they all showed up in alphabetical order up to and including the 62nd file and that was it. the last 13 just didn't show up at all. From what the manual states (pg 23) The player will show up to 150 files per folder and up to 250 folders per disk. Am I missing something here? |

Look at the mixed reviews. Tells me there is a quality issue - variable reliability.
I wish mine had shown me it's spots before it was too late to take it back. About every third DVD (commercial not home-grown) shows severe artifacts and sometimes just flat hangs. Never had a problem with DivX - ain't that weird? It almost acts like a bad buffer algorithm that periodically takes longer than it should to release resources. The net result is I can't handle this thing anymore - I like to sit and watch a movie uninterrupted, without nasty pixellation effects or having to stop-restart and hope that fixes some stupid hanging up problem. JVC is absolutely unresponsive to my requests for support. This thing is junk - stay away. |

I've had this player for roughly a month now, it's played NEARLY everything I've thrown at it. It has a problem with XviD occasionally, it shows the movie in cartoon mode, but a quick runthrough of D-Vision on the mac or dr. divx on the pc fixes it immediately. It plays DivX files with 5.1 Dolby Digital audio PERFECTLY. I've done a few DVD rips with AutoGK and kept the 5.1 sound, it isn't quite DVD quality sound, but it's very very good (much better than CD-Audio). It does NOT play DivX with DTS. Divx with mp3 obviously plays fine. I occasionally run into an a/v sync issue when playing a divx file, but it's not very often. DVD/VCD/SVCD all play perfectly, the player has a lot of features as well. I would imagine that it would also do multichannel MPEG, but my receiver will not play it.
Overall, I would highly recommend this player. The blue light surrounding the loading tray is cool at first, but rather annoying if you happen to leave it on in a dark room and it's bright enough to blind you.
I give the player an 8 simply for the XviD problem. I'm not sure exactly which version of XviD is causing the problem, I haven't been able to isolate that yet, but like I said, it's not often that XviD gives me a problem. It also plays msmpeg, which I have only tried a couple of times, it worked nicely.
The Divx quality is nothing short of spectacular when the quality of the source file is good (as is to be expected). It's very very close to DVD quality when you play a very high quality DivX file (created from a HD source or a very good SD source). I have converted a few movies from HD to DivX and they look great (even on a huge 53" TV).
The player would probably get a 9 also if it wasn't for the flimsy drive tray, it seems likely to break. Things just aren't made like they used to be. I haven't had any trouble with it yet, but if you have small children who use the player too, this DVD player might not be for you, I suspect that it wouldn't take more than a few pounds of pressure to break it.
Another bad thing is JVC's lack of firmware updates, they DON'T DO IT. So don't ever expect to be able to play anything other than what is listed on the box or listed in the forums/reviews here.
It's a good player for the price...not the best, but certainly not the worst. If you're looking for a DivX/XviD/DVD/VCD/SVCD player with an excellent picture, useful features, ease of use at a relatively low price, then this one is for you. |

There are certainly good things about this player. It is very quick to play a disc when loaded. It also playes most types of formats, including DVD Mp3's and Divx on DVD. It also plays Mp3's and pictures off of a SD/CF/etc card. However, JVX does not plan on releasing firmware updates, which means that the Divx codecs are pretty useless if a newer version comes out. What is worse is that some of the Divx files I tried playing were blue and/or blotchy, a symptom of an out-of-date codec.
I could live with poor Divx playback if it weren't for the other factors with audio and video playback of DVD's. Several times while watch Lord of the Rings, there would be artifacts on the screen for no reason. The discs are the real extended edition, NOT a copy. Also, the audio would gradually go out of sync with the video, forcing the disc to be removed and re-inserted. VERY annoying. I didn't see support for DTS either.
I got frustrated with this model and took it back for the Sony DVP-NC875V instead. Much better, even though it does not play Divx. |

Plays everything pretty well, including KVCD and SKVCD, but its XviD codec is about a year old so the newer videos have the familar green blotches and bad pixilation with color distortion that an out of date XviD codec gives.
I'm not sure if this is with all players or not, but I wouldn't suggest trying to use the "Set background to file" option. What it is supposed to do it take a picture you loaded into the player either through a disc or memory card/stick and change the bland "JVC" logo on a blue background main screen to the one you picked. However, in trying to do this the player says "loding..." and then immedeatly become unresponsive. Unplugging it and plugging it back it does nothing and you essentially have to exchange the player, I had to 3 times in the hopes it was just the one player. I haven't tried with the latest one I have and don't plan to.
Also, I've emailed JVC and they state they have no plans for firmware updates for a while (if at all) so that means no new XviD codec.
Otherwise it's a decent player for the price but I'd go with the Yamada if I could find one in the States. |

Overall this player will play just about anything. I took the first one back because the audio and video would not stay in sync. This happened both on DVD+R's that I burnt and also on original DVD's such as Lord Of The Rings. In fact, the audio kept skewing the farther you got into the movies. Totally not acceptable so I took it back to try another JVC (same model) and had the exact same problem.
Another note is that the playback of AVI/DIVX/XVID files produced a picture which had a lot of horizonal lines - it didn't seem to matter which AVI I was playing, it did it on them all. Yes, it was watchable, but the quality SHOULD be much better.
Because of the audio sync problem, I cannot recommend this player unless they upgrade their firmware to something that will work properly. |

Sharp picture, Great sound. The only thing I wish it played is raw mpeg files like my Apex. The media card playback works well. The ability to change picture settings for gamma, brightness, contrast, saturation, tint, sharpness, and y delay.
Hard to beat, good bang for money. Picked it up at Best Buy. |

Just got JVC XV-NP10S player at Best Buy and Philips DVP642.
Compared both - they are pretty much the same. I'm not a DVD professional, but I thought I would type this anyways. There is not a lot of coverage on this JVC player on the net as of now...
I didn't try many things with them but here is what I can tell:
Out of the box configuration....
1. NTSC quality - JVC is a little bit better
2. PAL quality - JVC is a little bit better
(tried zone 5 DVDs, surprisingly works on JVC even though it is said that it is for zone 1)
3. Sound seems much better and richer on JVC, but maybe Philips sound settings just need to be re-adjusted. Used Compsite Out. JVC does not have Optical audio connection, so maybe it is a minus for people who need this. But through the R+L it has a GREAT sound.
4. Tried MP3 audio on burned CD and it worked fine on both.
5. Tried DiVx .avi files and there was a number of hick-ups on both players but in different places, when tried to play this praticular file.
The file was encoded at (will post this later, because don't have access to it right now).
The other files with lower bitrate were fine.
6. The JVC has memory card slots, so it will be usefull if you want to watch you photos on your TV without the hassle.
7. The Philips cost is $69.00 vs. $99.00 for the JVC
8. JVC looks good where as Philips looks cheap.
9. I believe Philips can support more file types, but JVC has more features to play with.
So, judge for yourselfs.
Also if anyone else has something to point out in comparison between these two players JVC XV-NP10S and Philips DVP642, please email me if it would not be hard for you (olegosATinameDOTcom). I just want to keep one, don't need two. Thanks a lot!

DivX Certified with Home Theater profile. Tested MPEG-4 DivX (and XviD) operation on CD-RW. Found that full D1 (720x480) would NOT play properly -- skips and hesitations -- but smaller resolutions (e.g.: 704x304) worked fine.
According to JVC's manual (and DivX Certification), 720x480/30fps should work, but it doesn't appear to, even at 2000kbps ABR, half the max bitrate of the DivX Home Theater Profile. QPEL and GMC are not supported, though the manual does say (buried on page 23, not in the specs) that MPEG-4 ASP is supported. I have not been able to determine which decoding chipset is used in this player.
Also, according to the manual, only MP3 or MP2 audio are allowable with DivX/AVI, however, as reported by others, AC3 audio works fine. I have not tried PCM, but I assume it would also function.

Great looking player with excellent picture quality. Everything I through in so far it plays smoothly and flawlessly. Plays even DivX or XviD video with AC3 encoded audio (in my experience, but I heard from others that it does not support AC3 encoded MPEG4 video).
Only one problem, or better to say disadvantage - very sensitive to dirty or even slightly scratched discs. Will freezes for a few seconds if laser meets dirty or scratched sectors. |

| Great dvd player, played all my pal all region dvds flawlessly with great video color and clarity. Xvid and Divx releases work flawlessly also I haven't expienced one problem. AC3 Sound on Divx/Xvid works perfectly. Poped in a 4 year old divx that I had sitting around and played fine. Svcd and Vcd worked fine both pal and ntsc. Decodes DTS and has all possible outputs for audio and video. I had the older model of this and I plan to stick with there products, would recommend for anyone. I have not tried subs on xvid or divx, but I don't have a doubt that it won't work. |

Seems to be a pretty cool player. One option that isn't listed in our choices above is that this player has ports on the front for the different types of memory cards. The DVD player can display jpeg images directly from the cards.
I tried the player with all sorts of divx discs, vcds, svcds and dvds and it didn't have problems with any. The divx feature is going to save me hours and hours of time converting to SVCDs and DVDs. |

| Plays Xvid/Divx great on DVD-R and DVD+R and CD-R. Found this player at Best Buy for $130 with a free 64mb media card. Bought preaty much just for it's Xvid/Divx supports so far everything I've thrown at it has played without trouble. I used Ritek DVD-R and CompUSA DVD+R media. Reads Memorex black CD-R's with divx or S/VCD. Haven't tried anything more than this as I've only had it for 2 days but so far this DVD player is a very versatile. |
