I have a PAL-Version of the DVD-Player (Region 2)But when i want to play a NTSC-VCD it will not work. I always have this single Problem, but i can say, that this is the best DVD-Player i erver had.

OK tested all the above and worked fabulouse

the Jvc-N5 is the same as the JVC-N5SL i checked them both and are exactly the same ......

Tested ......

VCD

cdrw - played great even with menues, and chapters

cdr - played great even with menues, and chapters

SVCD

cdrw - played great tested with Sony, Memorex, GQ all playered great no glitches no problems

cdr - played very good tested same brands as above ... but worked the best with the GQ < cheapest brand around 7 USD for 50 pack> had no problems with audio , video and sync all worked without a glitch ... tested using Nero < created menu worked great> used vcdeasy < created chapters which worked without a glitch>

MP3s

tEsted on both cdrw and cdr tried using 128 and 192 both worked great with no problem the on screen menue was easy to navigate and understand .... could use some cleaning up but still worked great ....

Still havnt tested dvdr/w formats but as soon as i do will let u guys know .......

This version of JVC also has a slim look about 3" 1/5' wihtd and a clean front panel that lights up blue when ON and Power button is Red when off and white when ON ... all Buttons for play , rewind etc turn a clear white when player is ON very awesome looking

Contrary to what others have said, I cannot make it read MP3's off a DVD-R or DVD+R.

I've tried Sony 2x DVD-R and Memorex 4x +R's both using DVD+R and DVD-ROM book type! I've even tried 100% ISO compliant settings (8.3 and all uppercase) - still it says "No Disk"

I have no idea how the other poster managed to get DVD-MP3 to work.

My PC's have no trouble reading all of the discs
above.

Everything else is great about the unit.
MP3's play well from CD-R's and the navigation and display are much better than on an average unit.

It's nice player. Originally I have purchased JVC N50BK, but there were some issues with pixelation. If I paused scene on N50BK I could see horizontal lines on the screen. This player resolves issue. It converts PAL to NTSC, but my PAL DVD are region free, I need to get some DVDs with region encoding. I plays DVD-R that my previous player Thoshiba 710 could not play. So far I'm happy, but I think my Toshiba had slightly sharper image. But it could be only me. Got at Good Guys for $119 before $25 mail-in rebate, can't beat the deal.

Comments:
I have red something about using standalone DVD player JVC XV-N5SL (Eisa prize winner - best Europe DVD player 2002/2003). I have prepared few SVCD´s, every with antoher settings (first CD was CVD subtitles, VCDXBuild, two audio streams, second CD was SVCD subtitles, VCDImager .. and so on) and I have gone to the shop. There I tried to play all CD´s here is the result:

1) none of all CD´s show subtitles, although the player sometimes indicates them (in the left upper corner appears an subtitle icon in the start of the playing) and sometimes not.

2) all CD´s correctly play the sound and in all CD´s I was able to switch between two audio strems (and both played correctly).

3) photo CD (format VCD 2.0) with menu and photos worked fine, but I noticed, that colors of all shown photos turned a little bit to green, even if the photos did not include any green parts.

3) the picture of a video was always sharp, perfect visible quality BUT ... THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I NOTICED WAS ... during playback of all CD´s there was always DARK AND LIGHTGREEN COLOR in grey and black areas of video on the sreen. In other words - when the scene on the screen was for example night, night battle or even darker corner of the room, I saw always the mixture of gray-black-GREEN color. I was not able to change the video settings of player to correct this mismatch color reproducing (JVC XV-N5SL has a video-fine-processor with severel modes of video to change the picture - saturation, hue, tint, and so on). No success. In PC I use WinDVD, PowerDVD, I play on my DVD-ROM and CD-R/RW drive, I tried another PC with another graphic card, another CD-ROM ... and I noticed none of the green-color-problem mentioned above. During of my visit in the shop I tried another DVD playd PROLink ... when using this player, the green color was also visible in the dark areas on screen, but not so much. Does this problem appear to somebody else?

Under those circumstances I realized not to buy neither this JVC player, nor the PROLing player.

Won't play mp3 or jpeg in random/shuffle order. If this had been reported prior to my purchase I wouldn't have bought it. If this isn't important to you then it otherwise appears to be a fine unit.

Plays SVCDs and SVCDs with menus, very well, plays cds with photos thrown onto them well to.

Has played all commercial DVD's so far.

Plays "acer" 700meg CD-R

also plays some old CD-RW's i have.

Although in the manual it says you can't play CD-Audio it plays that well. (It says "It may damage speakers" or some bull for DVD-RW, DVD+RW. although i think that, that is more to do with trying to stop piracy, since people have said it plays DVD-RW and DVD+RW)

Although the manual points out that it will only play DVD-R (and nothing else), it plays DVD+R and DVD+RW. I had not the chance to test it with both "compatibility bitsettings". The media i used for testing was:

DVD+R: Fujifilm Recordable
DVD+RW: Verbatim DataLifePlus SERL

Pros:

Very sharp and clear picture
Many possibilities to adjust pictures
Nice design
Silent operating

Cons:

JPEG Encoding very slow
No CD-Text

VCD and S-VCD created by "Pinnacle Studio 8" (version 8, 8.1 8.3 or 8.5) doesn't play on this DVD player.

Created by "U-Lead Pictureshow" or "EasyVCD" it runs.

Comments:
Pros:
1. Nice exterior (cool blue backlight for front panel, not just for display)
2. Nice and reasonable GUI.
3. Very good picture quality. Video Fine processor (VFP).
4. Resume 30 disks feature! Works great for DVD as well as for (S)VCD.
5. Read DVD-RW. (manual says it does not :-).
6. Digest feature to review initial scenes of each chapter on DVD/VCD.
7. Plays PAL DVD and (S)VCD on NTSC TV.
8. MP3 play
9. Best screen saved I ever seen - simple dimming ;)
10. Extremely good designed playback control. I NEVER seen anything like this in cheep DVD's. Like instant 10 seconds replay, series of continous still picture, FF/Rew up to 60, slow motion playback graded not from slowest to fastest speed. Usability in general is way above average.
11. Zoom in up to 1024 times. Zoom out up to 1/8 times.
12. Good OSD/menu bar.
13. In MP3/JPEG mode screen can fit much more items then average player.
14. Pretty fast loading.

Cons:
1. Slow rendering for JPEG files. Rendering for 1.3 Mpixel picture takes abou 5 seconds. No way to interrupt rendering.
2. No random/shuffle feature for MP3/JPEG files.
3. No resume feature for AudioCD, JPEG or MP3.
4. No progress bar on OSD.
5. Won't play MPEG's from ISO.
6. No miniDVD.
7. No FF/Rew for MP3.
8. GUI for MP3/JPEG playback could be better.
9. No region hack available yet.
