| Very good DVD player but ability to read mp3s is going to be worse every month. Now it can't read every files in a folder even if there are only 20 tracks. I have to record 22 files to be sure that first 20 of them will be visible and playbale. It's horrible! |

| After I gave this player a good rating, i want to give it now a negative rating! After a year in use it gives more and more problems reading recorded discs. Movies witch played without problmes, now won't play at all!! Slower recording speed worked better, but now even those dvd won't play!! |

| Share opinion with most of the others: excellent pic (on my 2 years old Phillips pixel+ tv) & sound (on my Rotel amplifier and Bower & Wikinsons speakers). Even plays Dual Layer DVD+. Only the shift takes about 10 sec! Soon I will burn a Verbatim DL to see if this was not incidental. |

At first, my player was not hacked for region-free, and it sucked.
Took it to the store and the made a change.
Now it's the perfect player for me.
Plays well, with high quality almost anything. |

great Player! works also with DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 - AC3 audio cd´s! - i´ll will love it!
superb picture, great speed on zapping between chapters.
i do 3dvd´s with ac3 sound!!! (2hr.films x 3)=6 hour´s in svcd 480x576 resolution (made by dvd2svd with only 1000kbit rate) and see no difference between org dvd on my thomson 16:9 tv
great work jvc. before i used a jvc x300 but he was much slower on reading medien or zapping ;-)
great picture quality, mp3 also on digital out! coax and optical digital out! super speed drive (much faster than my older jvc - only 1 year old)

This very very good DVD player hasn’t any problem to read all type of formats.
I tested it with this supports :
- CD-R 74 -> test ok
- CD-R 80 -> test ok (overburning 82 min)
- CD-R 90 -> test ok (overburning 92 min)
- CD-R 100 -> test not ok (tested the some with Amstrad the test is ok)
- CD-RW 74 -> test ok
- CD-RW 80 -> test ok
- DVD-R -> test ok
- DVD+R -> test ok.
The negative things of this player are:
- automatic display-resize of files JPG is not very good (better display files not resized);
- some type of file JPG compressed with progressive-codec are not displayed;
- changing of sub-title or audio in DVD in not very good (you need to change at the start menu; if you wont change them after start of film you could have some problems).

Great player, only downside is that it cant play cd-r's bigger than 80min/700MB, tried with a vcd burnt on a mmore 90min disc. The disc tested out fine on a pioneer dv-545 though.
Region hacks on this player has to be done from JVC i think, it's a firmware upgrade. |

Hi folks,
I read a lot about burning DVD's as a backup. Finally I found the right combination:
Burner:
1) HP dvd 300I (internal burner IDE)
Media:
2) Nashua DVD+RW
3) HP DVD+R
4) TraxData CD-r
5) Philips CD-RW
Stand-alone player
6) JVC XV-N5
Handled with:
7) DVD Decrypter
8) DVD2One
9) CopyToDVD
OS:
10) XP
No problem at all! Even older burned CD-r and CD-RW's are no problem for this incredible JVC (with MP3 support in perfect quality, even in 128Kbps quality).
I have to say, also other brands of media worked without any problem! I'm very glad with this combination. Also I can play my burned DVD in Pioneer Home DVD set.
I have also a SAV-800 set from Sony. This (almost) will not play anything! Sony is history for me!
To most wonderful part is that I burn at max. speed and even then it worked for me.
I'm located in Europe so maybe the hardware has different typenumbers in other countries.
Hope that I was of any help. Keep up the good work here! |

Hi there! Here's my story.
Sold my GREAT player Kenwood DVF 3550 because it didn't play SVCD's. Bought me a Philips DVD 634 last week.Played about everything, BUT the pic-qality was no good at all (dark areas).So i took it back to the shop and swapped it for a regionfree JVC XV-N5S.And now i'm back on track! It plays VCD medium pic, SVCD very good pic, DVD good pic, MP3 good sound, Audio-cd good sound, JPEG-pics loads very fast,faster than the Philips, skiptime very fast, Tested reg 1 and 2 and it works perfect, converts NTSC discs to your regular PAL-TV. All discs loads pretty fast in the player. Last but sure not least...the player is VERY quiet...ssccchhh!
...although i miss my Kenwood,SUPERPICTURE!! |

The DVD-Player is the best I ever had, because it plays
all what I give to it for Example VCD, SVCD, XSVCD, MP3, Picture-CD ... . And it encodes my NTSC-SVCDMovies
automatically to PAL, so I can see it on my PAL-Television. :-)
But it didn't play my miniDVD's (UDF 1.5).
You can only see the picture, but you have no sound! |

This is my first DVD player. And I'm glad that I've found VCDHelp on the net. Its VERY resourceful. And thank for those guy's who posted there findings on this player.
So here's what I've found so far for my player.
(No bad comment means that the CD's worked Perfect!)
Verbatim (printable surface):
4x - VCD with menu (2 year old cd made with easy cd creator version unknown)
Platinum CD's burned at (Cheap Brand):
4x - SVCD with menu ( SVCD PAL Sample from VCDHelp, burned with Nero 5599 )
4x - SVCD ( NTSC, burned with Nero 5599, Movie ) Note NTSC movies play on normal PAL televisions.
16x - Joliet data CD with only JPG files in sub directory's.( JPG file where 2048x1536 100% quality compression, shot with a canon s30 so they loaded very slowly about 10 seconds. Long file names. burned with Nero 5599 ). If you want to load them quick, convert or author your cd's with VCDEASY or NERO Express. It worked for me and the pic's load within 1 second.
16x - Joliet data CD with only MP3 files in sub directory's.( All Kinds of MP3 files CBR and VBR
ranging up to 320Mbit. All directory's and files in Long file names.
Lifetec : (Cheap brand)
4x - SVCD ( Burned with Nero 5599 using Nero Express , added SVCD .mpg's compressed with TMPGEnc. VBR Bit rate up to 8Mbits. I think this causes the faltering. So the Max Bit rate should be lower than 8Mbits. When you play DVD's you can watch the current bit rate in real-time and in those cases they where not higher that 7900Kbps. This doesn't show with SVCD or vcd. I'm still going to try figuring out what the exact max bit rate of the player is. or maybe its the brand of cd I used.
Normal DVD movies play without any glitch.
The remote is very clear and user friendly (It looks a little bit like a cheap toy)
The Player it self looks good , and better when its on.
It has only a stereo output and no DTS decoder build in.
So if you want Surround you'll have to buy a Surround amplifier with digital decoder.
If you want a JVC with build in decoder buy the XV-NA7.
So far I've found no Region hacks for this player. I don't really need it. So I'm not worried about it.
My DVD burner is on the way (sony dru500). I'm also going to convert some home movies to SVCD and try CDRW's. So more Info is coming.
I bought my Player in the Netherlands and got a 5 year warranty.
Till now I'm very pleased with my first DVD player.

My new JVC DVD XV-N5 is a catastrophe for my. VCDs that run without problems on an 3 years old Mustek 300, runs for 30 seconds, starts jerking freezing and hacking on JVC. If I forward 3-4 minutes it’s OK, mostly. The same with SVCD. I use Pinnacle PCTV pro mpeg and Nero 5.5.9.9
My VCDs and SVCDs run without problems on a Pioneer and on a Philips DVD, and astonishingly also on an old JVC, (N3?). So do test your recordings before you buy a JVC XV-N5.
