| This is an awesome DVD player. It plays nearly everything except it has problems with SVCD's burned with Nero (5?). I don't use them anyways. Even plays movies backed up to DVD+RW. I love the up to 64X search and the zoom features. The remote fits nicely in your hand and is also well laid-out. Best $99 I've spent in a while, and no problems whatsoever. |

This is a great player. it work with nearly everything.
The only thing I had problems with is showing JPG's. It only show about 20 pictures of a list of 200. Any idea how come/
Further I would like to play region 2 coded movies on this machine. Does anyone knows of any hack to change the settings?

I've had the jvc xv-n44 for about 1 yr. now and so far so good!!!! My main concern was DVD+/-R backups!!!
It plays any and all DVD+R, Any burn speed
It plays any and all DVD+RW, Any burn speed
* It plays only DVD-R burned at 2x or slower!!!
DVD-R this player is very picky!!!!! Although DVD-R
burns over 2x pixelup freeze and skip, all dvd-r burns 2x and under play perfect!!!!!
Media
fujifilm dvd+r 2.4x
fujifilm dvd+r 1x-4x
memorex dvd-r 1x-4x
memorex dvd+rw 2x-4x
sony dvd-r 1x-4x
sony dvd+r 1x-4x
Other than the DVD-R over 2x burn issue this player is perfect!!!
IF you can find one buy it!!!!!!!!! |

I have had the player for a few months now and have had very little problems with the unit playing my ripped dvd videos. I have had a few problems with dvd-r media loading using my plextor to make the disks. I have to eject the disk a few times and maybe turn the player on and off before it will read some dvd-r disks.
Windows XP Pro 1.6ghz, 256 mb ram
Plextor 708UF (USB 2.0 connection being used)
Media: Ritek> gold dvd-r 4x, and Ritek Printable dvd-r 4x, Memorex> DVD-R 4x, DVD+R 8x, DVD+RW 4x. |

Excellent Player. Plays everything that is stated.
One little problem is the svcd that I create tends to skip a bit. Don't know if it is the programs I'm using to create it or the player.
Excellent for dvd-/+r
Highly recommended

I recently bought this player and have been pleased so far except for one thing...
I've watched a few movies so far, and during each one, either once or twice the audio has become muffled, as if someone put their hands over the speakers completely. You can still hear the sound and make out the words, but it is very muffled.
If I press Pause then Play, the sound comes back perfectly.
I've tried rewinding to that spot in the DVD to see if it would happen again and it did not.
As I said it's happend during several movies. At the most, it happend twice during viewing one movie.
Could this be a heat issue, or something else? It's not a critical problem, just annoying. I'm just hoping it doesn't get worse. |

| Before I was going to buy a new player I decided to read all the review and see what model to get. I decided to order this unit and now that I've powered it up I did some basic tests with it. Basically, I was looking for something that could support both DVD+R and DVD-R. Both play in this play without any problems. I haven't tested any of the other media, but more extensive tests will follow. I was extremely impressed by the loading speed. They player claimed it was the fastest loading unit on the market, but I thought DVD-R and DVD+R would take longer. To my surprise, I was dead wrong. The unit is extremely fast at loading media. If it were any faster, it would start playing before you inserted the media. No complaints from this end, but I will do more testing with more media. After I give this unit a true workout, I'll report back with my findings. |

Hi,
I bought this model at FUTURE SHOP for 140$ CDN to replace a very crappy AMW V-99 also bought at FUTURE SHOP for 50$ CDN.
I am very very pleased with this player because it played everything I threw at it without a glitch except for raw mpeg files.
VCD and SVCD either NTSC or PAL works fine even on cheap CDs (I tried memorex, black memorex, cursor, gigastorage, maxell, verbatim).
Regular DVD,Burned DVD-R, +R play flawlessly (I tried pine, memorex and maxell).
I also transcoded some SVCD to DVD with DVD-lab and had no problem with them.
I read here that (S)VCD with menus created with NERO were unreadable. The unit I got has no problem reading them, but the menu is slow to appear (5-10 sec).
Mp3s play fine with long file names.
This is my first real DVD standalone player. I always used the DVD-ROM of my computers to watch movies before, so I can't really compare it to other players (except maybe the crappy AMW V-99 that I kept for a week). |

I just bought this DVD player for my parents, and I wanted to try it before I gave it to them. I have never dealt with such a better DVD player, it played Lord of the Rings : Return of the King SVCD on the cheapest of cheap CD-R ($14 CDN for 50) without any skipping.
I also tried a DVD-R (Ritek G-03) also without any problems, these are the two main reasons I want a DVD player.
It also has progressive scan which is a definate bonus especially for a player under $150 CDN.
One thing I noticed this player does very well is play the DVD to menu in under 3 seconds of the DVD going in the player, which is obviously a HUGE bonus.
The remote is VERY well laid out and was a s elling point for me in getting this for my parents. They are always bitching and complaining about remotes having too many functions. This one is point and click one button to start the movie.
I have not gotten into the other aspects of the DVD player, but for my "AVID" VCD and SVCD viewing, this is the DVD player for me. I would reccomend it to anyone. |

I haven't had the opportunity to do extensive testing on this player, as I bought it for a christmas present for my mother. I can tell you that it played all my SVCD titles (some downloaded, some created with DVD2SVCD and all were burned with Nero).
VCD Header trick discs played better than in the Apex and Philips players.
VCD also played without a problem.
Tried several brands of CD-R and they all worked great. Bought the player for CDN $140.00 at futureshop.

| I bought this player because it said it played all formats, VCD/SVCD/DVD+R/DVD-R. So far, I have not been able to play a single VCD or SVCD using NTI CD Maker or Nero. I read through the threads prior to purchasing this unit and thought this DVD player would be the one for me. So far I am very dissatisfied with the fact that I have not been able to play VCDs or SVCDs. I did get it to play a DVD+RW without any problems and I do like the quick start feature, but other than that, this player has been a disappointment |

Even though this player is displayed as being able to play MPEG1/2 ISO, it doesn't.
I lost many time because it says here it can, so I thought I'd let others know.
I tried to play a CD-RW that had a few MPEG1 & MPG2 S/VCD compliant and not compliant files, but all I got was a message saying "non-playable disc".

Awesome player! Plays evrything you can throw at it, doesnt mind my cheap $16 (canadian... i guess $11us?) 50 pack cdrs (hyotek or something brand... cheap anyways). I bought this player specifically to play burnt vcd's (as my hitachi POS wont play anything) and it has played every one i've cut.. from my first attempt with no chapters or menus to latter versions with multiple menus made with virtual dub (to get chapter selection pics), photoshop and vcdeasy...
And all in a unit that has a nice bright display, and whose buttons dont spontaneously jump off (erm apex, cough cough) And it does load fast... no damn little dvd icon blinking for 10 seconds with this baby!
sorry to all the really cheap players out there, but i like to see my time counter somewhere other than from the screen

Let me start out by saying I have a Kenwood Sovereign DV-5050M 400 DVD Disc Changer which really struggles with the new Centropy releases in particular and has a little audio burp every 15 minutes on DVD Rips but none of that was evident with this little bad boy from JVC.
I tried the new Centropy releases and they played flawlessly as well as some DVD Rips I have and old VCD's as well and they played without a hitch and I was using about the cheapest no-name CDR's known.
I would give a strong buy on this little dynamo from JVC, you will not be disappointed.

| I review this player earlier and the only thing that remained was to try SVCD's. I plays them fine even non-standard ones. My SVCD was 480 x 480 resolution which is default for SVCD, MPEG-2 29.97 frames per sec. 2200Kbps video bitrate. 44100Khz 224Kbps Audio. These are all non-standard settings and they work fine. Burned in Nero as a VCD with standard compliance turned-off. I used TMPGEnc to encode the movies. Tried one at 720 x 480 and it played but very choppy. The reason for this I figured out was the bitrate was still at 2200Kbps and that is not enough for that high a resolution. I know this because it did the same thing as my 1150Kbps VCD's used to do before I cranked up the bitrate, but at least I know that this player will take non-standard VCD's and SVCD's which is great! 4700Kbps or higher would probably be better, but that makes for a very big file! Too many CD's to bother with anyway. 480 x 480 looks really good. Almost as good as DVD and by far better than VCD. Like I said before, it will play anything you throw at it, SVCD, XSVCD, VCD, XVCD, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW and MP3. I have yet to have any problem, even with disks that have 2 VCD movies on them (tail-ends of movies put onto one CD). This is without a doubt the best player I've ever owned. It's staying till it's dead, love it! |

This player rocks! I have tried many VCD's at many bitrates (Up to 2100Kbps) and it plays them no problem. Reads any brand of CD, even the cheap ones like Ritek, and the more expensive like Maxell, FujiFilm etc. My VCDs have never looked better! It must be that VFP (Video Fine Processor) they use in this player cause my VCDs seem to look sharper. I owned a Toshiba SD-2800 before this and many cheap ones before I settled on it. The Toshiba was a very good player, but, this one can do more.
The picture quality on this one rivals any DVD player I have ever seen except a Panasonic (Which are too pricey and don't do enough formats) I used CladDVD, DVD2AVI, to rip and frameserve and TMPGEnc to encode them. I also use Nero to burn them. They all work well. Going to try SVCD and see how that goes. The blacks are not washed out looking on this player like a couple of people here said. On the contrary, I'd say the levels on this player are the best I've seen. Black is the color that it is easiest to find squarish textures and pixels on and not many players do it well uless you get a name brand like Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Toshiba, Pioneer. I find anything other than these players to have poor black reproduction. The Toshiba was not bad but this player has no picture anomolies, no washed out look. Of course I have mine hooked up with component video and that tends to give truer reproduction of color. I'd dare say it has the sharpest picture I've ever seen on any DVD player. The sound quality on this unit is excellent! Even just hooked up with the RCA cables to a T.V. it fills the room. I will be keeping this player for a long time. Seems to have no problems with scratched DVDs either. |

| Regarding the zoom steps for this player, they are: x1.8, x4, x8, x16, x32, x64 (a total of 6 steps). The x1.8 zoom step is useful for viewing widescreen formatted movies on an ordinary 4:3 TV. I don't think the other speps are particularly useful. |
