I love this DVD player. It supports jpeg and mp3 discs, and it is an outstanding player. The only problem I can think of is that the remote is not very responsive. To some this may be a big deal (to me it is). You will lie there holding your arm up, pointing the remote in all sorts of directions trying to get the unit to register the buttons you push. Other than that, the player itself is terrific.
I has played most writable media without problems. The few times I had DVD+R not work right may have been due to compatibility of that media with the burner, so I can't blame the JVC. |

Just bought the JVC so I can't comment on dependability. It looks like quality especially considering the price. This one may be getting discontinued so you might want to really consider it now.
It reads movies faster than recent Panasonics, and Sony's I've tried. Picture quality is identical of my other player, a Panasonic RP62. I don't have HD so I use the S-Video connection. I can't comment on progressive mode. My Panasonic RP62 won't play DVD+R's unless made on something like the HP burner that changes it to be read as DVD-ROM. My Plextor keeps DVD+R's in DVD+R form, and it also burns 4x media at 8x so I want to take advantage of this. For some reason JVC doesn't advertise DVD+R compatability. It states it plays +RW but doesn't mention +R's. I didn't have to change bitsettings, either. It played +R's right out of the box. Only due to this website would I have know about this feature.
I burn -R's & +Rs using Decrypter, IFOEdit, and IMGTool. And both work on this JVC. So if you burn with a different method you may get different results.
A CD of MP3's that works in my car Alpine player cannot be read on the JVC. This may be my fault in the way I burned it but that was a long time ago. It did play burned audio CD-R's and CD-RW's fine.
But I suggest that if you are wanting to check compatability of a specific form on any model, just take the DVD or CD to a store that carries the model. You don't even need to see the picture if it's not hooked up. All you need to see is the time ticking off in the display. Make sure the time doesn't freeze since on a DVD the picture is freezing, too.
The JVC replaces an Apex AD-2600 that froze constantly on a couple of my DVD+R's though some burned identically did work. For me twice the price of the Apex is totally worth it. My second choice would have been the recent Sony 725 model at $130. I know those are also good with +R. The old Sony 715 is great, too. But so far it looks like I just saved $60. But I'll surely write back if the JVC screws up in the future. |

| I burned DVD-MP3's with a LG-4020B DVD writer on Memorex and Verbatim DVD_R disks using Nero 55914. I tried ISO, UDF and UDF/ISO formats. The disks were not recognized by the JVC player, which kept trying to reread the disks. I tried the Verbatim ISO format DVD-MP3 disk in a Pioneer player and it worked fine. |

I am rating this player a 5 as it did not have the functionality the summary above had lead me to believe.
Since I was particularly keen on MPEGISO playback, I was extremely disappointed to find out that it *DOES NOT* play them back. Additionally, playback of SVCDs on CD-RWs was problematic compared to my Apex AD-1200. Playback would be halting, with the soundtrack replaced by a series of audible "bleeps," or in one particularly intriguing case, the unit would play only a few seconds into the track ... and then begin to fast forward to the end of the track without audio!
While the unit seems to playback DVD-R media just fine, the lack of MPEGISO support, as well as the problematic playback of SVCDs, means that I'm taking this unit back tonight! |

Tried a burnt DVD that was done on Verbatim 4x DVD-R disks (using DVD Decrypter, DVDshrink and Nero 5.5.10.54) and it didn't work. It played fine on my Apex 1200 but, the JVC N40BK would not even read it.
I will probably get some other disks and try again as the JVC seems to be great for everything else. |

| This player can play CVD with 48kHz audio. That's all I cared about and when I tested it, and I was pleased to find out that it worked. It can also play XVCD and XSVCD, just don't set bitrates above 3000 (VBR). I've noticed freezing at higher bitrates. |

| Rated at 10 so far because I have nothing to compare it with and it does what I mainly bought it for, i.e. tranferring my photos onto a disc. Used Memorex Black CD-R's and burned MPEG-1 ISO with Nero5.5. from jpg's. Quality is good. Found the zoom useful. Manual is easy to follow. Have only burned 1 VCD so far. No problems. Looking forward to trying out the other modes as soon as I can learn how. |

| I replaced my XV-S300BK with this machine since I wasn't able to play PAL DVD (and oddly enough did play PAL SVCD). This machine plays them fine and I can watch on NTSC TV without problems. Everything I tried worked fine so far (VCD&SVCD PAL,DVD-R). The only thing that doesn't work well anymore are some of my slideshows I've created with myDVD and reused in another authoring program. It will freeze at the transition for a second. The ones created with myDVD directly work fine (and the slideshows I've created with moviemaker as well). |

| Works well with the things I have tested it with so far. Got it for $65 (after $20 rebate) from buy.com with free shipping. There are some limitations like 150 jpgs per directory (group) and 150 mp3s per directory (group) that meant I had to reburn some discs to play in the reader. Had a problem with one of my CD-RW and not sure what the cause was. Someone mentioned that the door seems flimsey. That is true. For the $$$ it is hard to imagine a better player. Fast load of 4 secs works well with DVDs. Slower screen loads with other formats such as SVD. Would love a player that could do jpeg and mp3s at the same time to have a slide show with sound. Maybe I will need to buy another one of these to do that? Burned some CD-R at 52x and the player had no problem reading them. Manual recommends jpgs be 640x480 for best display and that is understandable when larger resolution pictures are used since it is blocky/grainy. |

| Bought this player the other day at Sam's Club for $80, played everything I've thrown at it so far. One interesting tidbit while playing SVCDs: it reads them all as being approximately 39:51 in length, regardless of actual playing time. It will play the full length of the svcd in real time, but the timer display adjusts itself to stay in line with 39:51. |

This drive has played pretty much everything that I've tried. I still don't know of a region hack for this machine so I haven't been able to play Region 3 and Region 2 disks.
Region free PAL disks play great as do all the region 1 and region free NTSC disks I've tried.
I have some "problem disks" DVD-r's that were recorded on cheap media and the ONLY thing that plays them reliably is the DVD drive in my laptop. This machine did a better job than most with these and could play a few of them. |

| Just got this unit and it won't play any svcd which play on friends Apex, Pioneer. You stick the disks in, the unit attempts to read and then spits it back out. Tried VCD and that plays fine. Tried a regular audio cd, ok. I haven't bothered to try anything else. I don't get it, as there are three other reviews and they all state they didn't have any problems. Any help would be appreciated, otherwise this unit is going back for a unit that can play these without a problem. |

Great player, plays the following (that I have tested).
MP3s on CDR/RW
VCDs on DVDR/RW (using SVCD2DVDMPG+)
VCDs on CDR/RW
SVCDs on CDR/RW
JPEGS on CDR/RW
And im using crap DVD-R media to boot, something called "Generic 1X, Minus". No problems, JVC plays these as well as the Maxell DVD-RWs and CD-R/RW media.
The only drawbacks that I can see right now, is that it doesnt play MP3s off a DVD-R ISO and that the disc tray for this player seems a tad fragile, in other words, id be worried if you have this player and small children.
Got this at VideoOnly, and they fully let me bring in all sorts of media to test it out before I bought it. This player cost me 92$ total. |

This player works great for me, I got it for $100 from Circuitcity, and right out the box, no hacks it played my 2 Region 4 and Region 0 DVDs, without a problem.
Both DVDs that are Regions are:
The Wraith - Region 4
Return of the Living Dead - Region 0
It also has progressive scanning, plays all my DVD-R Media (Sony OEM is all I have tested), it also plays JPEGS, MP3s, SVCD, CD, CDR/RW.
Has optical out, and coaxial DTS output.
Zoom, Super quick disc playing, starts playing the discs within 5-10 seconds.
Basically I love this player...
It replaces my APEX 600a that just died...
