Terrific player, plays everything and plays it well. Love the remote control, good size, important buttons/functions all well positioned (this has been spoiled on the later jvc's others have bought-why ?)

Playes everything I throw at it.

Only thing can't seem to do is make it multi-region. But apart from that, its great. Good picture and the added DTS makes sound IMO, far better than normal 5.1

Going quite cheap now in the UK, if you can find one

Just bought this player. And so far it is working fine. Can play Traxdata DVD-R and Verbatim DVD-RW. (which is the ones that I have tested).

Problems with jpeg tough. In the manual it stands that bigger picture thatn 640x480 can take some time to load, which I can live with. But the picture is not good at all. It seems like, instead of shrinking the picture vectorial, the player takes away the number of pixels that is needed to shrink the picture.

Does anyone else have the same problem?

Had a Revoy 2200 and was ready to be replaced after 3 years of satisfied ownership. The Revoy was a good player 3 years ago but is now outdated.Bought the JVC XV-N33 SL ,after checking the internet for the features and experiences from other people, and I must say it´s a very good player indeed!
Plays everything I tested:DVD-R,DVD+R,XSVCD,SVCD,VCD and MP3.Especially SVCD was very important for me since I got a lot of these discs.Sound en Image quality is very good value for money.Quick loading times.
Recommended!

after blowing up my finlux dvd 510 I first had a Finlux 530 which sucked and was exchanged for a Finlux dvd 520 which sucked also. They sucked because I have 6 different brands of dvd-r's and only the Finlux dvd 510 played them all fine because that one uses a PC dvddrive instead of some wrecky build-for-that-player drive.

This JVC plays all my brands perfectly (nashua, nashua unprinted, pioneer, verbatim and two other unbranded dvd-r's! Also the express play is perfect; all discs are recognized within 3 seconds! when inserting a vcd or svcd the display says 'PBC' and does nothing but when hit Play he will eventually play fine.

My only complaint is not having an optical INput for the audio but the coax does just fine with AC3 and DTS! :)

very good player!

I've tried a few, and this is the nicest DVD player yet for me.

Zoom is good, 1.85:1 films zoom to full screen which is ideal on 4:3 tvs, and 2.35:1 zoom about 1.8x which is about the same letter box size as 1.85 movies normally have which in my book is perfect. Heaps of options to play with, and by default the audio is configured for output to a Hifi or amp, so may be a bit low. This can be changed to TV mode and then the level is a lot higher and matches normal tv levels. Remembers where you are up to on 30 different dvds! Nice picture quality! My only quibble would be that the sheer amount of options may make it difficult for the novice to work out how to find things, eg, changing the display mode so that time remaining is shown. Otherwise, fantastic and worth $199AU. And appears to be region free.

Bought this DVD-Player in Elgiganten in Denmark for 160 euros. I've had several standalone players before. None of them satisfied me. Especially the Amitech players where a real pain in the ass....

Obviously playback of commercial DVD titles hasn't been a problem on any of the players I've had...
What I was looking for was a player which could playback copies of DVDs on DVD-R(W), CD-R(W) and so on. Especially copies made on cheap media.

This JVC does it all. It accepts all the discs I have including the cheapest noname DVD-R media found on the net. I have tried to play DVD-Rs with all sorts of bitrates, (X)SVCDs, (X)VCDs etc. and the JVC just accepts the discs as simple as that. Concerning media compatibility the JVC is a true DREAM MACHINE.

The lack of true NTSC playback for european players is the reason why I don't give it 10 out of 10. I believe some quality might get lost in the conversion of native NTSC material to PAL.

The player also has some limited features when it comes to MP3 and JPEG playback. This isn't a problem for me though.

I bought the JVC-XVN33SL for 159 euros at Auchan (Spain)

It works very well. I've tried it with DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP3-CDR, MP3-CDRW, Audio CD, DVD-R and it play all of them without problems.

I don't find a region code hack that works yet. (It's region 2)

A good player ;-)

This is my 2nd DVD player I bought. The previous was a ProVision, so I don't have that mucht of a comparision...

First of all, introducing my audio set:
All speakers are KEF S20,D50 and C60
Front through Sony TA-640SD (1990 model)
Surround through Yamaha DSP-492E (pro-logic aplifier).

Comparing video with the previous player, as well as my VHS player, I can't say that I see much of a difference with original DVD's. I think the Yamaha aplifier gives the main reason when it enhances the picture digitally. On the other hand, using VCD's the picture looks much better than on the old ProVision and matches my computer's picture.

The sound on the other hand is a complete different story...
When I went looking for a DVD player, I wanted one with an internal AC3 decoder. After fine-tuning the DVD player, I think I can say that I don't need one anymore. The sound-coding that the player does from Dolby 5.1 to Stereo is superb and the Yamaha aplifier has no dificulties decoding the sound. today I watched Signs and I took the THX test that comes witht he movie. All 5 speakers give sound on their tested channel!

There is only one weird thing I can't figure out. I've made a lot of CVD's from japanese manga series. All VCD's have been created with Nero, all on the same system and burner. One of these series can't be played on the DVD player.

Overall, I think this DVD player is a great bargain for a pretty low price. Now we only need to get a hack for the player, because I can't play a number of my USA DVD's...

Great for DVD and (S)VCD watching. Nice on-screen interface. 30 disc memory resume. Very quick and responsive playback. If buying this player to watch video, I'd give it a 9/10. Looses a point for limited picture zoom capability - zoom factor ranges from 1.5x to 60x. I don't know why they don't make a player with 1.1x 1.2x, etc. Usually I want to remove *some* of the letterboxing, but not all. And as for 60x, what bloody good is that unless you're a Blade Runner?

Main drawback is limited MP3 functionality. The interface has a crappy feel to it - it is a standard "plain text on blue screen" interface without the nice rendering and menus of the DVD/VCD/CD playback interface. Also:
- no ID3 tag support
- no random playback function
- no programing tracks
- "recommended" bit rate is 128. Quality seems fine to me using 160 CBR. Haven't tried others.

Purchased in Australia for $AUD230. According to sales rep, all models sold in Aus by JVC are region free. This is certainly true of mine, even though the box and packaging claim it is Region 4.
