Other cons are that svcd-subs won't work and no divx support.

CVD? $200 over 1 year 7 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename DivX XviD MPEGISO Comments: I don't know about the PAL capabilities because the only DVD-PAL I have, this player will not read. I suspect that it is because the DVD is the wrong region. I do not believe the claim that this player is region free. The DVD plays in my PC DVD-ROM, which for some reason won't play DVDs from my region, only that one. (I've removed the ROM of course as it is useless otherwise) This is a great DVD player but it doesn't do what is claimed on the box. The only MPEG-4 files it will play apparently are from DV cams and not the type you make or download on a PC- it says that inside the manual but doesn't go into detail about just what type of ASF (mpeg4) it will play. Also, the switch on the back that is supposed to let you choose the 480/480i pixel resolution does not work. There is no control on the remote for this option that I can find. I would have taken it back to the store I bought it from but I never got around to it. As I said, it is a fine DVD player. It's just a normal (albeit high quality)DVD player. Mentioning that it does anything that most other players in this price range won't do is misleading to say the least. As far as using it as a photo CD viewer or an MP3 player, it is mostly ok except it only reads so many files from the disk. On an MP3 CD with 200 songs, you might be able to even see or play only half of them. Same goes for jpeg pictures. Also like most other dvd players for some dumb reason, it will not shuffle MP3s, which in my opinion is a vastly ridiculous oversight. I'll give it a 7 because what it will do,it does very well. I should give it a 0 though because it doesn't do what they claim it will do.

CVD? $60 270 days 8 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: great player. plays every type of media i throw in it. from cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r and dvd+r. also supports, XVCD - 352x240 KVCD - 352x240 XSVCD - 352x480, 480x480, 704x480 KVCD - 352x480, 480x480, 704x480 burn them using nero and uncheck "make compliant VCD". or use VCDEasy. one note about VCDs, this player doesn't auto-play when you first insert the cd. you have to press play. also, this player doesn't seem to like hi-res (704x480) VCD Menus. when i insert a VCD with a hi-res menu and push play, all i get is a black screen. i have to keep pressing stop/play to get the menu to show up. so now i just use 352x240 menus. the manual says it supports playing ASF files, but i'm not to familiar with the format so i don't care to test it. the NTSC/PAL coversion works great. all in all, this is a great player from JVC. fast loading, too. i will definately buy another JVC player for next generation DVD formats.

The remote is badly designed - for example just imagine making the "Enter" button one of the smallest and in such an out-of-the-way position! The real problem is that the thing just does not work a lot of the time. 2/3rds of all rental DVDs will not read to begin with. Eg, one video which was sparkling clean didn't read; exchange one which was dirty did OK! I am fed up with taking them back to rental store. None of the advertised self-recorded modes would work. The unit has been back to the JVC repairers and they say it's OK - but it still rejects the majority of DVDs. Buy something else!

CVD? $60 3 days 8 of 10 DVD-MP3 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: Easy to set up, and like a toaster just works, no fuss no muss. Plays my DVD+R and DVD+RW even though it does not list it. Don't know if it plays all brands though. Nice remote. Needs better anti skid pads since it is too light and slips when you load disks. Loads DVD's very fast but very cheap flimsy tray, kids could brake it very easily if they are rough with it. Nice pricture quality, did not see any noticable issues with this.

She bought some Koss player from Crappy Tire (it was so ugly, with neon blue along the front, that it had to go back). Then we had: Zenith DVB410 -- audio sync problems with SVCD Philips 642 -- played everything, but clunky player and interface; loud motor This JVC was a little more expensive than the other three (about C$20 more; C$99 at Cdn. Tire this week), but it's a much nicer unit, loads fast, runs quietly, and plays SVCD without a hitch. For what it's worth, the MP3 playback is fine, although it doesn't use tags. It also has a low character display for filenames, but it does use a fairly good directory structure for playback options (so you could modify your filenames to maximize the potential using this player).

This unit has a clear picture; I was quite surprised at the small footprint and quick load times, not only for DVDs, but for VCDs and SVCDs as well. A good player for the price your spend on it, has played pretty much everything I've thrown at it so far..

Althought it's a ntsc unit, PAL DVDs, VCDs and SVCDs works A1. Progressive scan works great and output in 480p is detected by my tv. Very fast to recognise disk.. even cheap princo dvd media. The only thing that makes me give it a 9 instead of a 10 is that it does not have an optical output...

CVD? $? 21 days 7 of 10 Comments: 80 bucks in NY. Wanted to mention that it plays Memorex DVD+R (4.7/ 4x). SVCD does fine Used nero to move a mpeg - 480x576 to 720x480 on dvd+R. Nero did it as it plays on my pc, But the JVC wont play it ... This my be my problem, who knows. Progressive Scan show big improvement with movies you'd assume would look better (Nemo, Matrix ...) Remote has many FWD and REV settings ... start up and power seems faster than my first magnavox.

The other feature I loved was its slim design and its light weight.

Looks like this will be going back. Too bad, this is a nice small unit.

I will be returning it first chance I get.
