| I have tried the Imation CD-R discs for VCD playback and they do not work. The Imation CD-RW discs seem to work. I've used EAZY CD/DVD CREator 6 to make my VCD slideshow discs. I haven't paid a lot of attention to the brands. Since I got a DVD dual format Writer, I've had to be very selective with the brand and format of DVD discs. DVD movies copied with DVDX Copy Express to the Memorex DVD+R 4X will not play on my JVC player, but the Maxell DVD+R 4X does. I've tried Philips DVD+RW and they do not work. I've tried Maxell DVD-RW and they do not work. LiquidVideo DVD-R 2X discs work great. Then, thinking I could use any DVD-R discs I tried DVDPro DVD-R 1X to 4X and they won't play. I have a Phillips multi-system DVD player that will play all of them. A person could go broke trying to find reasonably price discs that will work. I have used the changer with two disc VCD movies and have had no problems. In all, considering that it wasn't rated to play DVD-+R/RW discs I'm lucky that it will play any at all. |

So far i've had good success playing DVD r/rw +/-
Burned with Nero 5.5.10.50 and Easy CD/DVD Creator 6 basic Both in Data /iso mode and UDF/Iso(nero). Only problems so far is trying to split the movies into 2 parts with DVD Fab Disk one plays Great Disk 2 won't play at all It just keeps reloading Disk 1 then back to Disk 2.Even if only loading 1 disk It will still ask for Disk one.I'm a newb here so I could be doing something wrong (shrug) Ripped with Shrink 3 beta, Decrypter. So far I've only tried Memorex 2x R/rw- and 4x R+, 2.4/rw+ media and CompUSA 1x burned at 2x. Burned with my Memorex Duel X-1.
I've only tried to play 1 cdr my brother-in-law burned it was a no go, don't remember the media used.He burned it with Easy 5 don't know mode used |

| This DVD player does play DVD+R. I have been able to play DVD+R's that were burned by Stomp Recordnow . I guess they have to be burned at UDF1.02 as data dvds. I never could get it to play CDR'S. At first I wish I hadn't had bought this play; now that I found out that it plays dvd+r I am glad I did. |

Only a few CD-R's and CD-RW's work. Imation seems to be the best brand but I have verified Hi-Val,Fuji,and Harmony Pure Gold. I prefer Imation CD-RW 1-4X. The key is to keep your recording speed low (like 4X) and look for media with a gold or dark gray tint to it. No blue or green. I always use the SVCD-VCD header trick to make the player play the better looking SVCD. Do not Overburn, this will cause the player to freeze because the drive is not fast enough to keep up the closer it gets to the center of the media, especially at higher bit rates. Also, avoid TMPG at anything less than 2376. The program is notorious for bit rate spikes that cause pauses in the video. It's funny but this player likes higher bit rates with TMPG. I have gone up to 2776. This made a Big but flawless, close to DVD quality, video. Use Cinema Craft if you need lower bit rates because it's more stable.
Lastly, this player has served me well as far as playing DVD's but, if you're interested playing VCD-SVCD's, get a different one. It took a lot of time to figure out how to make this one do it because it's so picky. |

I have used Imation CD-R's and they have worked flawlessly. I used Memorex CDRW and they have worked flawlessly. It will read a SVCD with the header trick and I have played them with a resolution of 740x480 encoded at 2500 bit rate. This seems to give me the best quality possible that will work with this DVD player.
I am glad to hear that people are having luck with DVD-R and I will soon have one to report on. |

[erase[ Hi Baldrick, please REPLACE the JVC XV-M567 entry I submitted on Jan 13, 2002 with THIS one. Thanks, just want to make sure your database remains accurate ]erase]
Footage was captured on a Canon XL-1, converted with TMPGenc as a VBR MPEG2 clip, authored on DVDit SE, and finally burned to a Memorex DVD-R on a Pioneer DVR-AO3 using Prassi PrimoDVD. (an earlier attempt burning with Nero resulted in an unreadable DVD-R)
Some precautions taken included setting the DVR-AO3 from DMA to PIO, flashing the firmware to 1.65, and upgrading PrimoDVD to v2.0.749 on the European website.
The DVD-R included menus and chapter points.
The JVC XV-M567 played this disc fine. No hiccups, no perceptable artifacts.
Next, the XL-1's footage was encoded by TMPGenc into a 1240kb MPEG1 and burned into a VCD using Nero (v5.5.6.4). Multiple clips were used and linked using Nero's menu feature. This was burnt onto a silver CompUSA CD-RW (speed rating of 4x)
The JVC XV-M567 plays this with OK results. Occasionally, the footage freezes for 20 seconds or more. I've tried varying the bitrate, but it doesn't seem to fix it much. Surprisingly the menued thumbnails made by Nero work. The JVC can select each thumbnail and play back the MPEG clip it links to. Quality of VCD footage is nowhere in the same league as DVD-R. VCD footage looks like a fuzzy VHS recording on EP mode... blurry detail.
Since this JVC was capable of reading CD-RWs, I tried creating a SVCD, but the player won't have any of it.
For it's DVD-R and VCD playing ability I would have given this JVC player a 7 rating, but the convenient three-tray feature brings it up to a solid 8. If you have footage that spans across three VCDs, this means you wouldn't have to swap out discs.

| Ok so I used a few cdrw from Memorex silver/gray 1x-4x and another by a company called Digital research and also from Smart and Friendly and I had no luck with either one of those cdrws. I am going to pull my hair out soon, well whats left of it. The weird thing is that all of those disk play just fine on my Panasonic 5 DVD changer. Can anyone suggest another Cdrw or maybe I am doing something wrong. I am using Roxio Cd Creator 5 Platnium series to burn along with a Philips Cd Burner. Thanks |

| No problems reading VCD on Memorex silver/gray CDRW either on 8x-10x or 2x-4x media. Could NOT read TDK green CD-R. Luckily, I test everything to CDRW before i commit to CD-R, and I prefer CDRW because Hard drives are cheap and I don't like a lot of clutter. Plays DVD's good. |

A pair of DVD-R and DVD-RWs were created on a Pioneer DVR-AO3 burner using MPEG2s created with TMPGenc 2.0 using a VBR2 process (6000avg|8000max)
Both these discs were played on a separate PC sporting a DVD-ROM drive (Ricoh MP9060A) and had no problems.
Now to test it on a JVC XV-M567 set-top player. Inserted the DVD-RW disc not expecting it to play. And it didn't. Next, the DVD-R disc was inserted. Fuggetaboutit. Didn't play either.
Time to point this player toward the obsolescense heap as Recordable DVDs get more mainstream. |

Well I have had his DVD player for about a year now. And I have tried CDR's with no luck. Never thought to try CDRW's just didn't make sense to try a CDRW untill I was reading more about my player on this site. Now one thing I noticed is that it will play with CDRW's 1x-4x media. With VCD's that I created with my home movies from a digital camcorder. But it does not seem to work with HIGH SPEED CDRW's 4x-10x. I have Tried verbatum and yamaha HIGH SPEED media.
Thats funny how could it work with cdrw's? only?
What is really lame is that it won't work with high speed cdrw's and burning at 4x takes for ever compared to what my drive can do with cdr's (16x) or even HIGH SPEED CDRW'S at 10x. |

| This DVD player was a good buy last year, probably wouldn't buy it today because of the limitation of playing CDRs ... however, with the price of CDRW coming down, it's still not a bad option, expecially if you're burning multi-part VCD to multiple disks. Having 3 drive bays is a plus considering most good quality movies on VCD are going to take at least two CDRWs. |

tried a cheapo cd-r and it did NOT work. Tried a cheapo cd-rw and to my joy, it DID work. My advice would be to just stick to CD-RWs because you're not wasting money on trial and error.
One thing I did not was some choppiness on playback. Seams like too many dropped frames or something. But the picture and the sound quality are pretty darn good. I used TMPG Encoder and Nero to burn. I also used Virtual Dub to capture. |

Actually, this first did NOT play vcd's at 1150kb.It plays them perfectly encoded at 1246kb with TMPGEnc. And it plays XVCD's at 2500kb with 352 x 240. CD-RW for computer are the discs that worked best(also for music and well as vcd's), not cd-rw da.. it says in the booklet it can't play CD-RW, but it does. i think it's a very good player, after testing it out with different formats. just gotta have shit-loads of patience.
