I give this player a 9 based on its output quality.

If you have a HD larger 16x9 TV you will be very impressed by the 3D like picture. It has a film like output, no artifacts.

This player was 900.00 2 years ago and now its like 175.00 its a steal.

I burned 20 DVD R+ disks using a Plextor 8x DVD burner and all of the work perfectly.

The problem is this player was made before all the VCD stuff got popular and so far VCDs do not work. I have not tried the header hack yet so Its not for sure it won't play vcds.

The only downside to this player is in format compatability. And it has a soft video mode (non progressive) Almost all new DVDs will play in progressive mode so I have not found it to be an issue.

I will say that its sound output and its picture is superior to any of the junk sub 200.00 players out there.

I purchased a new pioneer DVD player for like 120.00 wondering if its progressive output could match the old JVC on my 65 inch mits. The jvc picture is so much better I had to take the pioneer back.

Note you will only get to see the JVCs potential using component cables and a HD TV.

All I can say is the picture is film like. To replace it I would have to spend about 500.00+ to match its proegressive output.

Build quality is much better than the new junk they are putting out. They have separated the power source and shielded it from interfering with the audio and video. You will not find that in the new slim line players.

I would buy another if they would improve the format compatibility. I challange anyone here to find a player with a better progressive picture for under 500.00.

Tested Philips DVD+R - Works great!
Tested multiple brands of CD-R - None of them work.

The DVD playback is good and DVD-Audio sounds great. JVC did a pretty good job in the audio department.

DD and DTS decoding is built in and available through digital outs and analog 5.1 RCA jacks.

The only reason this didn't get a 10 is because of compatibility issues. (Namely CD-R, and a few other minor things)

One note.
I found some lack of info.
Here it is given only the media and the player
but to have reproducible results you should
also give the burner and the firmware revision
used to burn things, and the burning speed at
which data was burned.
So I will give it, in the following.

VCD/SVCD/XVCD/XSVCD burned on CD.
----------------------------------
CD-RW Verbatim Data Life Plus burnt at 1x
with LITE-ON 24102B Firmware Rev. R245S07.
Works flawless but when you try to use more
times the same media erasing it and rewriting
on it it starts to not work properly.

DVD-R/DVD-RW burend on DVD.
---------------------------
The burner was a Pioneer DVR-105, with firmware
revision 1.33. All the DVD-R I used worked flawlessly, with exception of THAT'S Write 1x
burnt at 1x and PRINCO 4x burnt at 4x.
Brand I used where:
TDK (1x/2x) DVD-R burnt at 1x.
MAXELL (1x/2x) DVD-R burnt at 1x.
TRAXDATA (1x/2x) DVD-R burnt at 1x.
VERBATIM (1x/2x) DVD-R burnt at 1x.
For what concerns DVD-RW the only
type that has worked has been the VERBATIM
Data Life Plus 1x, burnt at 1x. It worked flawlessly.
Oher brands I tried but did not work were:
TDK DVD-RW for General use.
MAXELL DVD-RW for General use.
MAXELL DVD-RW for Video.
IMATION DVD-RW.
All of the above DVD-RW are 1x only support (version 1.1 of the standard).

Comments:
If you're like me, you're probably here wondering what DVD-R media works in this player. I've looked everywhere for someone to say, "(blank) media WILL work in this player," but have come up empty. But, fortunately for you, I have done my own tests and have come up with at least one brand that works quite well. TDK 2x general use discs have an extremely high success rate. I bought 15 for $35 on a spindle. A little over $2/piece. Glitches have been few and far between. I figure that'll happen with any media and any player from time to time. When it does happen, I usually loose audio/video sync, but a push of the pause button, and then play, will fix it. But again, this is a rare occurence. So far, this is the best DVD-R media that I have found. I have some Memorex DVD-RW discs that I use for testing my authored stuff, and that media tends to work even better, but as we all know, they cost more.

Technique:
I use DVDXCopy to rip the disc to the hard drive. DVDXCopy will want to burn the DVD also, but I just copy the temporary files elsewhere and cancel the process so I can use Nero to burn. I burn with a Pioneer 104/A04.

Please continue to post your own findings here for everyone to learn from. Thanks.

VCD's work well with Imation CD-RW (1-4x, 4x-10x) and Memorex Platinum CD-RW (Although I can't find that anymore)

SVCD's work well with the same. I have also gotten the CompUSA CD-RW media to work (700MB, 1-4x, Gold label) which didn't work for VCD's or Audio(???)

Have not tried XVCD.

Also something to note: I have been able to alter Video size freely(ie, 640x480, 512x480, 480x352, etc.) and it plays flawlessly, as well as bitrates on video or audio. Tried the same formats in an APEX 1100 and it would only play the standard compliance formats. Be careful how you encode. This JVC is flexible when it comes to video size, unlike most other players.

Quality: The DVD's it plays are crystal clear. Can't wait to hook up component video to see how much better it would be.

DVD Audio... wow! Some people hate it because they prefer the old 2 channels... not me. I wish everything sounded as good.

Have found that the only CD-RW media that can be used successfully is media from the Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp. factories. This includes Yamaha brands (4x speed), Mitsubishi (not tested), and Verbatim (4x speed).

I have tested the high speed Verbatim brand (1-32X Super AZO) CD-R and it doesn't work. I think that low speed Verbatim would work but don't have any available.

Added is my test results as found from CDRid and VCDEasy. My drive is a SCSI Yamaha 4x4x16 Model CRW4416SX

I bought this player a few years years back when it was the cheapest true progressive player around. I was bummed to find out that it didn't play CDRs, but it does in fact play CDRWs. I've only tested Sony CDRWs, and it takes a couple seconds to read it. Sometimes it didn't read the disc succesfully or load it successfully, but it did on the second try. All my CDRW VCDs will play fine without glitches once they load. My old Toshiba SD-3109 would always glitch. I never thought of testing SVCDs, since I just assumed they wouldn't work. BUT, I took my VHS copy of Star Wars Special Edition, did an IVTC and noise reduction and outputted it in 352x480. I encoded about 20 minutes of it at the maximum SVCD bitrate (with my audio at 384). I burned it as a VCD. Had a little trouble getting the VCD program to accept the file, but it did. The player played it fine. And beautifully. On my progressive scan TV, probably because I IVTCed it, the image was even a bit better than VHS. The noise reduction helped a little. Compression artifacts were minimal, probably the same as in digital cable and satellite. SO, this player KINDA plays SVCDs/CVDs. And Pioneer DVDR media works flawlessly.

Plays Pioneer DVD-R/RW media fine. Although the DVD-RW tends to be touchy. DVD-RW works best with commercial copies not home movies as well.
Plays Memorex DVD-R media fine.
Does not play Pinco DVD-R media.

Superb quality throughout this deck. Plays DVD-Audio also.

Comments:
I'm not certain about the subtitles and audio tracks as it's not clear what's actually on the test media. The player allows selection of subtitles but never showed any from the test media. Similarly, the player allows audio selection of ST1, L1, R1, ST2, L2, R2 but L1 and R1 seemed to play audio from both channels and there was no audio on the second track (ST2, L2, R2).

I had great success with higher resolution with the following setup:
with Ulead Video Studio 4.0
24 Bits, 704 x 480, 23.976 fps
(MPEG-1)
Video Data Rate 1100 Kbps(higher rate may be possible)
44100 Hz, 16 bit stereo
Audio Data Rate 384 Kbps
Nero 5.5.6.4 Demo WITH SVCD STANDARD COMPLIANCE OFF
TEAC CDRW disc
I believe that other SVCD and XSVCD variants may be successful.

Please note: the downloaded sample file XSVCD-NTSC-350kbit.zip had dropped frames and choppy sound.

Maybe a DVD +RW won't be needed anytime soon after all.

I bought this for the progressive scan and 5.1 surround sound one year ago. I didn't know about
VCD until recently (Dec2001). The video output of this unit is outstanding. I tried several TDK CD-R VCD's but it did not work at all. After looking at previous reviews I tried a TEAC CDRW VCD and it worked the first time. Overall, VCD appears to be of barely marginal quality at its inherent (352 x 240) low resolution. After this, I'll be moving to a DVD recorder/writer soon.

Works very well. Have only tried Memorex 4x CD-RW media, but it performed flawlessly.

What a great player! The sound from this is incredible I now use it exclusively for all my music CD's, because it put my Sony changer to shame. The picture output is also excellent. Very bright, vivid and sharp output. Even with VCD's.

VCD's: I have had success with Imation CD-RW's but none at all with Memorex or CompUsa brands. I haven't tried the premium CD-RW's from these brands, but I really wanted to stick to the easily available cheaper disks. Imation is 10 for $12 at Wal-Mart. 1x and 2x burns work perfectly, but that may be a result of the burner.

I only gave it an 8, because I think a 10 should play CD-R's and MP3's.

But if you want real high quality output, then you should consider this player.

Comments:
Have had very nice results playing VCDs burned with Memorex Platinum 4X CD-RWs. I've tried ones burned at 1X 2X and 4X, all seem to play. Those burned at 1X seem to have the fewest problems and play fairly smoothely. Track change is quicker than I would have expected on a RW disc. Store-bought VCDs also play well.

Haven't gotten any CD-Rs to work at all. Somewhat disappointing, but no big deal since I only use my CD-Rs for audio CDs which I don't play in my DVD player anyway. Have yet to try Mp3, but I seriously doubt it would work.

Have gotten this player to read vcd's on cd-rw media only, it will not recognize any cd-r that I've tried. It's very shaky on rw's too...sometimes it takes 25+ opens and closes to even get it to play, and most of the time it will hiccup or freeze during playback. I've tested just a few brands, with Imation and Verbatim seeming to have the best results. Any added input would be greatly appreciated.
