Overall, this seems like a very good player. It plays DVDs & BDs with no problems and it has played every AVI (XVID) that I've tried.

However, I chose it for its MKV support and on half the MKVs that I've tried the picture was completely pixelated. MediaInfo shows that the MKVs that work have a ReFrames value of 3 and the ones that don't have a ReFrames value of 5.

I've updated the firmware with the latest official version (7.154) from http://www.jvc.co.jp/english/support/bd/xv-bp1/index.html but that did not help. Hopefully, a future update will.

Nice player overall. Extremely rapid to load compared to other models I shopped for.

Plays XviD files like a charm, but one has to tweak the "File Identifier" as was suggested by dj234468 in order to play DivX 5.0 files.
(I use this to do it http://www.videohelp.com/tools/AVI_FourCC_Code_Changer)

I have NOT succeeded in getting it to play DivX 3.0 files, no matter what I do.
Divx50 is mpeg4 based? divx30 isnt? I am still trying to sort it out. Still, rate of success in changing the identifier from DX50 to XVID is 100% so far.

Does not play "VCD" format, unless there is a trick to figure out.

It plays audio CD's, MP3 cd's or DVD's without a problem, but forget introducing a CD or DVD with wave files (.wav) on it, it sees nothing. I fail to understand why as it can play the format anyway. (The ".wav" format is "PCM")

Plays PAL and NTSC without bugs for me. Smooth.

I looked around for a region hack and found nothing, so I am stuck with region 1. Would be nice if one exists that it be posted on the DVD hacks page.

CD-R and DVD-R, as well as DVD-RW work great. I have yet to try the USB option and the ethernet on it, and some other discs formats.

Paid 175.00$ CAD on sale, the regular price was between 299$ to 349$. I was going for the LG BD360/370/3890 models because they apparently were able to read all file formats and were easy to hack for region, but given the price I opted for the JVC. I don't regret it. Looks like a sturdy little player.

Just sad it wont read divx3 files and .wav for music though.

I would recommend the JVC XV-BP1 over the Panasonic DMP-BD80 anytime, plus the panasonic does NOT play PAL discs, bucks on many XviD files and is way slower to load than the JVC. I am only saying because sales rep tried to force me to the panasonic model for some reason, most likely the profit margin or commission they get from it...

When you start shopping for a player, I believe it's got to be in your final top 3 models to choose from before your pick the one you take home.
=)

Enjoy!

Love this player but the only problem I noticed is that is does NOT play Divx. It plays Xvid but no Divx which it clearly states in the manual. I use Divx2MP4 to change the file identifier from Divx to Xvid and then the player will play the files.

He plays all Video formats you trow at it, Dvix, divxHD,Xvid, XvidHD, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, MKV, plays also 5.1 formats, plays it also with USB Stick, now i only use a
USB Stick to play all my movies and series.

I have no FullHD TV i only have a old 32" CRT TV, and it plays great every movie.

A vary good Player and is fast with playing movies.
