Anything with a good amount of dats made this piece of garbage start locking up. part of the issue is that this was one of the first gen dvd players. I got it in 97-98 immediately I noticed it got really hot when. you could get a burn from the thing..it had overheating issues due to it's sealed case brilliantly designed with no ventillation. rarely did I get through a movie without a glitch or freez-up... I can't believe I paid $300 for this crap.went to target and bogut a cyberhome ch-dvd320 for 29 that plays everything just fine

N/A 6 of 10 DVD-MP3 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: Got this player for free 2 years ago. Was about to throw in the trash till I found this website. i didn't realize it played cd-rw. I tried it and they play fine. The lasers are tuned not to pickup cd-r. I also burned a movie with CloneDVD using memorex dvd+r and worked perfect. I don't have any dvd-r media to test.

N/A No rating Comments: I was about to give it away when i bought a DVD burner and i burn a movie and for the surprise it just played it both format DVD-R and DVD+r with no problems, now I'm very happy with this player.

CVD? $175 N/A 6 of 10 Comments: Good player but heard no DVD+/-R(W) capability. Tried LeadData DVD-R ("Matrix" - rip with DVDSchrink 2.3, burn with Nero 5.5.10.15 as DVD-UDF 1.02) and worked fine! However other medias (DVD+R, DVD+-RW) didn't work. A good surprise!

N/A No rating Comments: To my amazement, this thing is playing burnt DVD-R's. I tried with a DVD-R backup made with DVDxCOPY and one I made using Ulead DVD Workshop (2pass VBR 4k), burnt with VOB Instant CD/DVD, 1.02 standard, using a Pioneer DVR-A05 4X and Generic 1X DVD-R's. Both play flawlessly. I did not have the DVDxCOPY problem someone else was having with its Backup Screen and the FBI Warning on the 2 movies I tried.

N/A No rating Comments: Update to entry reported December 21 2002: Finally manage to get a VCD to work. The process was fine (used both Nero 5.5.6.4 and vcdEasy), however, I found that only Sony 650 MB CD-RW will work). Have been fooling around with XVCD's and have managed to get these working (720x240 @ 2500 CBR), however 720x480 & 2500 will cause green flickering. SVCD (or any MPEG2/VBR stream not in DVD format) - black screen.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: I have owned this player for over 2 years now and have alway's been pleased with it. Only occasional it will lock-up, even without a disc in it. It takes a hard reset of unplugging it for a few minutes then plugging it back in. This has only happened about 3 times since I bought it. I just recently bought a Pioneer DVR-A05 4X recorder drive. Tried the Pioneer DVD-RW that came with the drive and it didn't work. I have gotten the generic DVD-R 4x from Multi-Wave (legacy Name Brand) to work. There seems to a slight glitch with it though. I am using DVDxCopy the disc and it places a DVD Backup screen before the FBI warning screens and the player doesn't appear to like that. Just hit the stop button then either the play or Menu and the DVD-r starts no problem. I haven't tried authoring my own dvd's yet but am going to try that next.

N/A 5 of 10 Comments: My experience with this unit is that it will not recognize a CDR but will recognize a CDRW. I bought a Philips DVDRW228 and first tried several DVD+RW's with no luck.. I had already decided to give this player away because of it's poor support for various media when I thought I would try a DVD+R just for fun.. It worked. This was Memorex brand media. I'm quite surprised as I didn't expect it to recognize the DVD+R disc at all. I'm keeping the player now however it's relegated to the back room.. close to the rubish bin... No more JVC products for me.. however I did want to report to those interested that it does play DVD+R media.

Pioneer DVD-R burned with myDVD did not read (ejected disc). I do not know what the compatability modes are.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: This is overall a great player in terms of features, and the visual quality can be tuned to anyone's preference. My only gripe (now that I know CDRWs will run, even if not "closed") is that some discs won't play at all (Beastie Boys Anthology Disk1, Scary Movie). Sounds like the large data problems others encountered.

Has problems with discs with large amounts of data (HK Cowboy Bebop disc 1, Street Fighter II V disc 1, Pioneer Akira remaster disc 1)

N/A 7 of 10 Comments: "The Matrix" - menu runs sluggishly, and some of my "Avengers" DVDs have a slight pause (0.3 second) during layer changes. Otherwise, no complaints. For $200 street price (w/out manual), it is quite the value compared to no-name players which are a lot worse in quality - particularly with the number of output connection choices (S-video, RCA, et cetera...) The unit originally sold for $500 according to JVC.

CVD? $599 N/A 6 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: VCD/XVCD: Standard VCD's work fine. 704x240 works fine. 352x240 increased bitrate (eg. 3500) works fine. any x 480 cause green flickering onscreen for each alternate frame. miniDVD: miniDVD doesn't appear to work at all (sees as audio). SVCD/XSVCD: SVCD (or any MPEG2/VBR stream not in DVD format) - player freezes, black screen. DVD Playback: Hit and miss at times; sometimes needs to have the player's EEPROM hard-reset. Very slow response on The Matrix. Has problems with Robocop (Criterion) during layer change. All in all, not bad - but not tremendous.
