I've only had this unit a couple of weeks. Settings and menu take some getting used to. Some things I've found to be helpful:
Turn off Live TV mode, otherwise unit is recording to hard drive continiously,

Turn off cable box setting, if you set it for a cable box, it will default to this input for all timer settings (L-1,2 or 3)regardless of which channel you have programmed,

Keep aspect ratio at 4:3, 16:9 causes it to shrink the picture, especially on HD TVs,

When using VCR+, try to set timer (gives error message), then set channel in set-up mode, try setting timer again. This works for me nine times out of ten.

I got this unit for a steal at $200 without remote. I wouldn't suggest this unit for anything over $300.

I have been using this recorder for the past 6-months.The first few months were without problems. But after that it started to act up.By deafult from the first day the DVD's written on it does not play on all players(very few). Now it has started a new thing it records all the video and if not finalised you can access the files and play them back but after finalising it does not play anywhere, even the recorder itslef. We are using the original JVC dvd-r disks that came with the drive. We even tried Sony,Moser Baer but some work and some dont.It takes a long time to finalise we know that the disk is gone.JVC should not release products that conk so fast all that money spent now just is not worth it.Jvc should try to give us better support.I have mailed JVC about the problems and i did not get any answer yet.If anyone has solved these problems please replay to this.

I have reduced my rating, because, as I pointed out in my previous report below, the only question with this unit was reliability. Well guess what? Thats what has killed the rating.

After only 3 months of use, during which it was lovingly cared for and handled like a newborn baby, it has disappointed. All of a sudden, the unit would stop recording after 4.5 hours of recording time. It occurred when recording on the hard-drive and on the DVD-R & DVD-RW (video & vro mode). The picture would be frozen on the TV screen, the record timer on the machine woould show total time recorded and the red record light would still be on. At this point the recorder would not respond to remote on unit buttons. Each time this happened, I had to unplug the unit. After plugging back in, it would power on (no operations could be performed), then shuts off on its own. I then power back on with remote and try to finalize the partial recording. I get a message that disk cannot be finalized. So I have to toss out the disk as it is unusable.

This had been going on for about 2 weeks. I call customer service and was instructed to send it to a service center, as the unit needs professional work performed.

I dont have high expectations of longevity from this machine once it returns. This is a HUGE HUGE disappointment. It does record a great picture and editing on the hard drive is outstanding. I can achieve exact frame-accurate cuts/edits using the pause then the FF or REW buttons. This FF or REW one frame at a time. Very nice.

So the JVC boogey-man strikes again. Great products, but their recent run suggests their products just dont stand-up to the time test. Problems after ONLY 3 months is unacceptable. Shame on JVC, whose drive for profits by offering cheaper made and inferior produced products has taken its toll. The list of complaints about their products grow daily. I can no longer recommend any JVC product, as this once might electronics giant is falling by while Sony and others eats its cake. Too bad. They have the ability to do better. Pioneer DVD recorder here I came.

This is a great unit. It is very flexible with options available to the user. Records a very clean picture, maybe somewhat soft, but the trade-off is sharper image with macroblocks and/or noise. Add a video detailer to input into this recorder and sharp picture is there. Unit does a super job of suppressing incoming noise. It used a pre & post filtering algorithm to give a really clean quality picture, that is easy on the eyes. Colors are bright and vivid. Colors maybe a half-step below Sony, but it really is hardly noticeable.

Used primarily as HW capture device for Sat TV and VHS. Has option to record in XP, SP, LP, EP or FR (flexible recording). Flex recording gives the user the option to select the bitrate for the recording. For someone not familiar with bitrate calculations, get a bitrate calculator (free download on this site) first before using FR mode to be as accurate as possible.

Cutting ads/unwanted segments is very accurate, once you figure it out :-). Creating Play list and burning is flawless. A nice feature with burning, for example a 2.5 hour file is that you can record in XP mode (only fits 1 hour on disk), then burn to disk using a feature called JUST dub. It re-encodes your file to maximize all the space on a DVD-R disk.

Audio is recorded in Dolby AC3. For higher video bitrate recordings, the audio rate is 384 Mbps/48,000 KHz. Lower video bitrate recordings, the audio rate goes down to 192 Mbps. Audio is strong with a good kick.

Only 2 things that gets a thumbs-down. The manual is horrendously grotesque. Not sure what JVC was thinking when it threw that bit of nonsense in the box. Dont use it and you will be better off. Set-up wil take a little bit longer than expected and learning to use the unit may be a bit of a challenge, as you will be learning on your own or with the help of a forum board :-)

Another somewhat "knock" is the unit will, on the odd occassion make a pop sound. Very strange indeed. Interestingly, though, the pops have not been recorded into my files. The pops occur while watching Sat TV, but it is not the SAT causing that, as it does not occur when the unit is not attached. Weird indeed.

I highly recommend this unit. Can only give 9, even with the quirks. A 10 is perfection, and that unit has not been made yet. To JVC's credit, they have gotton close. Kudos. Longevity is now the only question that lingers.
