| I am astounded at this machine. Although it isn't branded as such, it plays Nero Digital (in Standard, haven't tried other profiles) effortlesly, and that's a big deal for me, as I prefer this emerging format to divx/xvid. Plays any and all avi, mpeg and mp4 file I've thrown at it with ease. Simply burn them to a data disc (I used a TDK DVD-RW) with Nero and it works like a charm. As for jpegs, mp3 and wma, no probs either. Even with all these disparate files on one disc, the machine plays them all with no hiccups. Disc spins up quickly and an easy to use 'file navigator' comes up once you load the disc and press stop. You can browse folders and even shuffle content! I happened upon this machine, thanks to Jliles review on another website and must say this is the best bang for your buck out there. Remote is the prettiest thing you've seen, but no big deal. $80 from Sears (grabbed the last one on the shelf). For any and all of your Nero Digital geeks out there, this is the machine to beat. (PS Jliles, you can skip chapters in mp4 files by using the Goto button and typing in the chapter number.) |

This player is not going to win any awards for solid construction, but I expected that. The unit is very lightweight, and the tray is quite skinny and seems flimsy. The remote is not the worst one I've ever seen, but it definitely leaves something to be desired. Lots of tiny, similar-looking buttons. There are no distinct buttons for accessing the setup menu or for performing slow motion searches - some buttons do double duty. Otherwise, the remote seems to work ok, you don't have to have it pointing *exactly* at the unit for it to work.
The setup menu is as absolutely basic as can be. The setup menu does allow for selection of screen fitting options similar to what the Momitsu V880N offers (full screen, fit to screen, original aspect ratio, etc). Setting changes cannot be made on the fly. The disc must be stopped for any setting changes to be made.
Much to my joy, this player remembers where you left off on several discs, even if the discs have been removed from the player and the player is powered off. This is something that drives me bananas with my Momitsu that I really wish more manufacturers would add to any future product.
The HDMI output is not capable of outputting 480i - only 480P, 720P, and 1080i. Using 1080i, this player is NOT smart enough to pillarbox 4:3 material itself (at least not with my display and the few discs I tried). Fortunately, my TV allows me to switch between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios when an HD signal is input, but if your display doesn't allow you to do so, and you hate seeing stretched video, this player is NOT for you.
I have not played enough movies yet to make a final decision on image quality. Film-based DVD source seems to play better on this player than video-based source.
This player shines in it's ability to play MPEG-4 files. This player easily handled files that the Momitsu refused to play and my Neuneo MPEG-4 player (which supposedly can handle GMC and QPEL) choked on. Using "fit to screen" mode, files played in their correct aspect ratios (Yes, interestingly, this player knows how to pillarbox an mpeg-4 file but not a true DVD). Video files are upscaled. Despite what the manual says, files encoded with GMC and QPEL play fine. The file browser will also display and play MPEG-1 and Mpeg-2 files, as well as the new .divx format (Divx 6 container). .Divx files with multiple audio and subtitles play beautifully, though menus and chapters are not implemented. The player also seems to recognize .srt,.ssa, and .sub subtitles without issue.
Also plays Nero mp4 files with AAC audio (though in "standard" profile only). It seems to "know" chapters are in the nero file if inserted but you cannot navigate to them.
The only avi files this player would not play straight away were openDML AVI files. This is easily fixed without reencoding in VirtualDub.
The player can be made region free easily via the remote using the same hack as used for recent vintage KOSS dvd players. I will post the hack shortly.

I found this player at my local Sears store which was quite a surprise. As a divx/xvid player, I would rate this player as excellent. If you hit the info button on the remote while the clips is playing, it shows the file name and its not truncated. With my current player, the infamous 642, I have to stop the player and return to the menu to see which clip was playing. It played my xvids with qpel just fine. I watch a lot of downloaded material and wanted a player that didn't require conversion in order to play. This unit played all my files without any problems. Both burnt and retail DVDs played without any problems. This is also an upscaling player that sends the 1080I or 720p signal over HDMI but not component cables. The unit is not mentioned on the companies website jsiproducts.com so I worry about customer support and firmware upgrades from this unknown company.
Pros: Excellent divx/xvid playback
Upscaling for 109 bucks
HDMI output
Cons: Cheap remote
Unit runs hot
No optical output
