This DVD is great for the price. Then again, for a long while I was using a PS2 to play everything. I got it a year ago and it still works like a charm. It's a little slow opening and closing. But other than that it plays everything I've ever asked it to.

This player works VERY WELL for me. I got it for free when a couple was moving out of their home. I decided to test it out with a few things. MPEGISO works very well, which I tested extensively. DVD/VCD/miniDVD/SVCD all work on this player. I heard that miniDVD is only supported by a few stand-alone DVD players. It works perfectly on mine. I have yet to test the other formats. AVI will not even come up on the file menu. Overall, I LOVE my non-purchase!

Comments:
VCD support is missing supposedly because the extra licensing costs would be a significant chunk of the cost of this inexpensive player. A microcode download reportedly can be done to add VCD support, but that will void the warranty.

I know the descriptions say this plays DVD+R, but I have yet to get mine to play ANY DVD+R discs. It just sits there for an eternity saying "LOADING", then makes a few clicking noises, then nothing, a few more clicking noises, then nothing... on and on until I give up and remove the disc in frustration. I've waited to see if it'd read a DVD+R for up to 5 minutes... nothing. (If there's a way to get DVD+R to work in these, I'd like to know about it!) This unit also seems to produce a LOT of playback errors when it's been in use for a while. I've often had to shut it down, wait a while, then try again. (This is in an air conditioned environment.) All in all, I think this unit is pretty cheapo, but since I got two of these for only $65 two years back(a friend manages a local appliance store), I guess I can't complain too much.

I bought it to play DVD+R discs of my files and home made DVDs and backups of movies but it says NO DISC after a few seconds.The AD1100 played those discs great with no problems.Will not play miniDVD(cdr dvd compilations).It was made before the AD1100 so the technology would have advanced after the AD1200 was made!Not worth paying $40 after you find it wont play any of your recorded movies!!

Mediatek version, Yellow serial number, Bios upgrade. Only claimed to play DVD movies, .JPG amd .MP3 and Kodak picture disk. Would not originally play VCD, but BIOS update fixed that. Haven't tried SVCD. Won't read DVD-R or DVD+R, but will play DVD-RW movies burned with NERO 6.?? Disc brand seems irrelivant. Irritating narrow angle for IR receiver, but improved using a universal remote. Someone should figure out how to put the IR receiver LED a little farther out of the case.

I used to really love this player when all I played was S/VCDs and commercial DVDs. Now I am sad, for no matter what dvd-r brand I try this player just does not want to play or even load it. Dvds that won't work in this player work flawlessly in my Sony DVP-NS725P. The Apex just sits and says loading forever. (Once left it running to see if it would go eventually, but gave up after 15 minutes.) If you're looking for a cheap player that plays commercial dvds and vcds and the like, go ahead and get this, but if you plan on viewing backups, look elsewhere.

Works great so far for me. I have had this player for jor under a year. I don't use it alot although it plays dvds and vcds that I have burned fine. I was surprised to throw in a disc with a burned mpeg1 on it and it brings up a menu and lets me play the mpeg from there. No need to burn in true vcd format. Even lower than normal frame rates seem to play fine. Plays mp3s fine also. I only use CDR discs for burning becuase they are cheap to buy. For the price the player was and the fact it still seems to work great I have to say it was a good choice. I also like the way it will display jpegs I have burned on cd also. Its what I expected at a decent price even.

It's inexpensive, but plays what expensive ones won't. Provides me with an excellent ckeck for compatability.

this is what was tested and ran fine copy mpg files directly to a cdrw vcd's and svcds run fine mp3 on a cdr works with no file menu on screen dvd-R a movie backed up with dvd X copy ran fine so far it runs everything thats put in the thing it was from wal-mart in cincy,oh area for $58 it has a red-orange sticker for the serial number on the unit and box the serial started with c1200021110e1283**** some had barcode sticker on it that has a date of 1/15/03

I get this unit from Compu USA because I was looking for a very easy hackable unit that plays everything...and it was only an illusion. I get the white tag starting with C>>>> with no rom chip so I can"t even make it multizone. I played a pal dvd without zone, and it almost unbelievable the quality with that this unit convert to NTSC. VCD IS NOT SUPORTED AND svcd HAS SYNCHRO PROBLEMS, SO IT'S GOING BACK TO COMPU USA EVEN IF THE TAKE ME OFF 15 %.

Plays all of my VCD and SVCD discs. Plays regular DVDs, CDs, and MP3s. My major problem with this player is that it won't play any of my DVD+Rs. I have Memorex, Maxell, Sony, Verbatim and Arita discs. Most were burned with Nero and all come up goose eggs. This player was manufactured in 08/02, and has an orange serial label beginning with C.

I received an AD-1200 as a replacement for AD-1500 under an extended replacement warranty I purchased with the DVD player from Compusa. The 1500 was excellent and played everything I tried. I create and use a lot of SVCDs and had no problems playing them on the 1500. But when I took home the 1200, it started out okay but the video would freeze after a short period of time. I tried a number of SVCDs and they all had the same problem. I took it back to Compusa and hope to get some kind of credit. I have other Apex models including the small inexpensive model AD-1100w that work just great. I don't know what happened with the 1200.

I really like this Apex. The pluses far outweigh the negatives. In fact, I bought a second one. Then out of the blue, I started getting 'no disk' messages and my home made DVD movies wouldn't play. VCD and SVCD and commercial DVDs played fine but my DVD+Rs wouldn't work in either player. Then I found a fix on this forum that involved adjusting the springs and in minutes my players are working fine again, playing my DVD+R disks without any problem. This player is awesome. I buy these from the local flea market brand new for $30 a pop. That's cheaper than a comptuer CD drive! It plays almost anything. I commonly use DVD+R and DVD+RW with no problems. It will play Mpeg files straight off the root directory, no formating required. The VCD menu's work with the arrow buttons on the remote too! I've burned cheap CompUSA DVD's and they work great. I haven't ran into any problems with brand names yet, although I have only used CompUSA and HP. By the way I burn with an HP-200i. It WILL play miniVCD. I've heard a lot of complaints about reliability and so far I have had no problems after 6 months. Even if it does break down, you can buy two of these units for the price of one premium unit (which might not play as much). OH, there is one problem though. If you burn 4 or more VCD movies to a DVD (yes you can), it does have a slight hesitation during play, almost as if it is having a hard time decoding. If you're having problems with VCD's, trying burning the MPEG files directly to the discs as DATA discs instead of VCD folder format. The player will play them that way too. REPAIR ISSUES: Most DVD players contain standard DVD drives connected with an IDE cable just like a computer. You CAN but a replacement DVD drive from a store, change out the face plate and stick it in the Apex-1200. I'm buying another one today for my spare room!

I've had my Apex AD-1200 for over two months and haven't encountered any problems. VCDs and SVCDs are working fine on this end. My DVD-Rs as well. Movies and MP3s, they all work. Could there be that many lemons out there and I got lucky with a working model? Another cool thing that surprised me is that the AD-1200 plays my karaoke CD+G disks. Too Cool!

This thing did not play VCD's, SVCD's or XVCD's as mentioned in the compatibility chart, I returned it and got Toshiba SD 2900 which now plays all of the above and more.

Go else where. Yes its cheap, but you get what you pay for...and don't get what you don't pay for. It'll work good for a while..but, if you use it a lot to play vcd's, you'll discover that the springs inside the unit weaken and the VCDs will no longer play. Yes, you can open it up, remove the tray and streatch the springs...and it'll work again...for a while. Spend the extra 20-30 and save yourself headaches.

This is the second one of this model that we've purchased. The first one, we purchased about a year ago, and it's still working fine. It plays SVCDs and VCDs just fine, as well as JPEGs and MP3s. The only complaint: the door is a little sensitive. Just a mild bump and it will close. Now we've purchased a second one and placed it in a different room. We like it even better. Every thing we throw at it, it plays. For instance, I put a bunch of MPEG2 videos in different folders and burned the folders to a CD-R. And this thing actually showed me the folders, and then allowed me to go into the folders and select the videos that I wanted to play! And of course it just eats MP3s for lunch. Also, the sensitive door does not seem to be an issue with these newer versions of the 1200. All in all, great player, great price, great flexibility. Hope Apex is around for a long time.
