I would have given this DVD Recorder/VCR combo a fairly high rating were it not so fragile. It was quite versatile and i intended to use it to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD and play DVD and DivX discs created on my Mac Pro in addition to just playing commercial DVD's and VHS tapes.

Over the first 12 months i only played perhaps 30 DVD's max, including DVD+R/W DVD's and DivX discs i created, a few CD's, recorded maybe 25 TV shows to VHS and DVD combined, and dubbed only 3 or 4 VHS tapes to DVD. Yet with so little use it began failing to recognize ANY DVD just 3 days before the 1-year warranty expired. Thinking i'd purchased it in October or November i waited until 4 days AFTER the warranty expiration to call Best Buy. They estimated $150 for repairs, so it became a mint condition dust collector.

It will still play CD's and VHS tapes, but i don't make much use of either.

Comments:
My parents' VCR died abruptly (explosively, almost) so I took the opportunity to get them an all-in-one solution to replace their sub-par DVD player at the same time. This was the second-cheapest DVD Recorder-VCR combo at Best Buy, and it took very little convincing for them to admit that the DivX/XviD playback capabilities made it worth the extra $20. Unfortunately, what works good on paper doesn't work so good in real life.

First off, the player likes to ignore the remote at seemingly random intervals, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for a few weeks. This is not specific to the included remote. This may just be something wrong with this specific unit, but even then the remote has issues. The layout is a haphazard configuration at best. Forget trying to get a universal remote to work properly with this unit; even if you manage to find a code that operates the most basic functions of the unit, I've yet to find a universal remote that can relay vital commands like Setup, Menu Left, Menu Right, or even Root Menu.

Secondly, this is NOT the unit to get if you are planning on using it with any sort of HDTV. The component outputs are a nice thing to have for those concerned about quality, but enabling the player's 480P output mode makes most video -- sometimes including DivX/XviD content -- look jerky, as well as adding noticable artifacts to color gradients and the like. (i.e. a red-green gradient will be made up of about 24 "steps", rather than one smooth color transition) The unit also allows you to set the aspect ratio of the display between 4:3 and 16:9, but this setting ONLY affects DVDs; off-air, VHS, and DivX content will be resized as though you are watching on a 4:3 screen, no matter what settings you choose.

Thirdly, the DVD recording capability is what can only be described as "proprietalicious". While the unit does do a relatively good job of recording video content from just about any source and is not picky about what kind of media it does it on, discs are written with a peculiar, malformed multisession track once recording starts. The track is overlooked by the unit itself, but many other standalone DVD players and any computer with a DVD drive will be unable to read the disc due to it being there. (Without some rather hardcore software, at least) This means that unless you're lucky you won't be able to watch those recorded TV shows on any unit but this one.

A couple piddly issues remain, including a complete lack of rear-input S-Video ports despite there being an S-Video input on the front of the unit, and hard-to-read labels on the front buttons. (Dark silver on light silver)

Now aside from the above issues (which are very significant, don't get me wrong) the unit does a good job otherwise. I have yet to encounter a DivX or XviD AVI (under 576p resolution) that it cannot play. Media support is excellent, and it was able to read a number of multisession discs I tried in it. PAL->NTSC conversion is top notch for DivX/XviD files as well; 25fps content is displayed crisply and smoothly, using some clever pulldown tricks (as best I can tell) instead of the usual blended frames seen on BBC America and the like. The VCR side of the unit also works well; if you get fed up with the DVD Recorder side's limitations, at least you can fall back to the old standby.

BOTTOM LINE: If this player dropped about $50 it might be worth it, but given the basic design flaws within you would likely be better off purchasing from a different brand. The proprietary DVD recording lockout alone renders the increased price compared to a non-recording unit completely unjustifiable.

Comments:
It is true, will not play factory pressed VCD or SVCD. However, it is a good player.

Absolutly REGION 0, Free, hack able. Details in hack area.

This a so close to the LG RC199H, minus card reader, HDMI/HDTV Upscale, and playing VCD/SVCD. Different pannel doors, but all buttons and AVIO same on front. AVIO same on back, minus HDMI of course. Model sticker is same on back changed brand. Same placement and layout.

Plays Divx well and auto detects SRT subtitles. Will read CD-R discs, so lack of play on VCD is in firmware, not loader. Maybe an option setting, see hacks.

Will auto detect both NTSC and PAL DVDs playing them normally. Region 5 and 2 work well after hack.

While it records just fine, I have not been able to play ANY CD, commercial or otherwise, in the unit. I also do not like the fact that I am unable to copy my movies on VHS to DVD for my own use.
