This unit has a good sound with support for Prologic, Prologic 2. Dolby digital. Dolby EX has a major issue and there does not seem to be a way to force EX mode. The only 2 dvd's I have been able to get work in the Dolby EX mode is Finding Nemo and Pirates of the Caribian.

Titles which do not work in ex mode are
Starwars all 6
Lord of the rings all 3
Indiania jones all 3
monsters inc
Harry potter's all 3
Goldmember (austin power 3)

are all advertised as dolby ex but do not work in this player as EX movies.

Tech support for insignia informed me that the player automatically switches to ex mode when an ex disk is played and there is no manual way to force the player in ex mode.

They also told me that it must be the disk that has the problem....LOL.... When I told them that it does work in other people ex machines (which they do) they did not have an answer for me. This is my only complaint (right now) about the machine.

Just a quick update from my last post:
This player played DIVX file resolution 720x544 very well. Earlier, I had said it could not play bigger than 640x480 file but I was wrong.

I am very happy with this unit.

My wife actually won this on her company raffle. So this is actually free. We all know this came from Best Buy.

I am very surprised of its capablity to play divx, xvid or MPEG-4 files. I have ton's of divx+xvid files stored on DVD+R/-R/+RW medias, and it played most of them without any problem. This was so cool treat for me, coz I did not really have time/energy to convert all of them to DVD/SVCD. Now I do not have to. :) It saves hundreds and hundreds of hours converting those files. Now I can just pass the cables through my DVD recorder (Cyberhome DVR-1500) if I need it on MPEG-2 format.

Only the problems occured with the xvid files that were of 960x540 resolution. Rest of my videos that played on this unit are 640x480 or smaller. So, I'm guessing it can not play anything bigger than 640x480. XVID videos with AC35.1C audios look and sound really good.

Another cool feature I like it on this unit is that it plays all MPEG files using file browser list. Can't ask more than that.

The surround sound quality is superb too.
