Plays rental DVD movies OK, but skips or freezes on majority of DVD-R disks recorded on my burner or friend's burners. Anyone know of a firmware update for this player? It's a boat anchor to me as it is.

I liked this unit from first disk. Half way through the movie the screen went blank. For months we have tried to figure it out but couldn't. Then one day while using headphones the screen went blank, as it has with every movie at some point during movie, being angry and fed up with the fade out every time I smacked the unit and on came the screen. We found that with the headphone plugged in and if screen goes blank you can jiggle the plug and the screen comes back on. Must be a loose wire or connection within the unit. Will be sending back before warranty expires. Considering the price I paid I would have gave it a 10 if not for this problem. Region hack worked great and since my wife is from Russia she can finally watch all her dvds. Works great plugged into our big screen and no fade out as experienced with units lcd screen.

Having problems figuring out how to make the unit receive video input as the Initial website advertises. The switch on the side switches between the screen and video output only.

Pluses:
Plays everything I have put in it. except DVD-RAM
Very stable even shaking it. Screen doesn't darken when you move to the sides like others, remote works with Mintek DVD Players, good remote, separate Jacks for audio and Video , you can connect sound to a car deck with input jack, decent Battery life(about 3 hours with LCD on)
Minuses:
Zoom indicator square stays on all times, sometimes angle indicator only at begining of movie, Battery charger not part of the AC adaptor, you have to remove the battery to connect it, noisy when searching for titles on discs.

Comments:
for the price, I can't argue at all. for $200 or less, it's really nice.
Things I like about it:

-innexpensive
-can be used as a monitor for external sources like camera, vcr, etc.
-Has never skipped for me at all
-battery life
-plays mp3, jpg, mpg off iso data cd/dvd
-plays every disk I've fed to it.
-4.7 gigs of mp3s on a DVD = 72 cds worth of music... oh yeah!

don't like:
-speakers are tinny (big deal, use headphones)
-screen resolution is a little less than ideal (but acceptable considering the price)
-FF/REW only on remote, not on body. body has chapter buttons though
-doesn't handle dark movies very well.
-video output of True letterboxed movies to TV does not letterbox, but stretches height.
-no way to fully expand pseudo letterboxed movies.

see, in a nutshell, there are 2 ways to make letterboxed movies.
1. use all 480 lines, but set a flag that tells the player that the movie is letterboxed, and it should treat the lines as being shorter than normal.
2. encode as a regular aspect ratio movie, but include the "black bars" in the compressed video.

now with this unit, it playse case #1 perfectly, filling hte entire display. in case #2, you have to set the player to "normal" mode, lest everyone look all stretched and fat, which compresses the width of the movie to normal TV aspect ratio, AND it shows the movie with the black bars on the top and bottom. there is no way to have it crop off the top/bottom in case #2.

After 3 solid days of buying and trying and returning 3 other 7 inch portable dvd players this one does what I want it to do and that is play raw mpg 1-2 files that are burned as data on a dvd-r or a dvd+r and it dosen't matter what speed those files are burned at. This is my 3rd player i have owned i sold the other two because im just a nut that way,as I said I returned two prior to buying and keeping this one.It plays everything flawlessly,svcds,vcds,mp3s,mpegisos,dvds,authored dvds, full dvds, shrunk dvds, and anykind of cdr or dvdr I can find..It will not play divx,xvid,mpeg-4 files when that firmware is available and is put into these players I will be the first to buy another player. In the meantime I highly recommend the Initial IDM 1731.I rate it a 9 because it wont play mpeg-4s

This player was bought so my kids could watch store bought DVDs as well as DVDs created with DVDdecrypter (backup copies!) and DVD-RW of recent movies on DVD. No problems except for short battery life. Hope some company comes out with a longer battery life. Plays MPEG 1/2 ISO files excellently. Screen options could be better to allow for contrast, etc., instead of just color and bright. Excellent player for the money. No longer need my Koss portable with separate LCD screen. Have not tried this at home or with multi angle DVDs to check for problems. Region code remote hack worked great on Region 2 and 3 movies.

I bought it from Walmart. It plays DVD+/-Rs just fine. I also tested it with several dual-layer DVDs and did not have the problems I've seen reported by a few. The screen is very nice and the audio with headphones is excellent. The built in speakers are weak. Overall, this is a great buy.

Do not buy this unit. The device has a firmware flaw that shows a continous camera icon in the upper right corner when viewing some multi angle dvd's. Shrek and Die Another Day widescreen exhibit the problem every time. Shinsonic(mfg) asked me to return it for flawed hardware. I did, the unit was returned to me with the same problem. They asked me to return it again they say that the problem is not fixed and they are returning the unrepaired unit to me and there is nothing they can do. The unit is falwed and the MFG refuses to take responsibility for the issue. BEWARE!!!!!! (I was happy with the unit at first)

Hello, I bought the player at Circuit City.
I was looking up your page and found what I was looking for. Hacking the Region Code. I could switch to Region Code 2, but the original DVD wasn`t starting from the beginning and furthermore I couldn`t use the Remote and the build in pushbuttons. They were not functioning anymore.
After I shootdown the player everything was as usual.

Does someone can give support for that above mentioned problem?

Just received my unit. It Played DVD-R's and and store bought DVD's fine. The problem I had with the unit was that any multi-angle DVD or(DVD-R) showed the camera angle Icon on the screen always. I contacted Initial and they said I had a defective unit. I had to mail it back 3-4 weeks for repair. I felt that the problem was not a mechanical defect but firmware that shipped on the unit was not tested. Also their is no low battery warning. DVD's freeze on low battery.

I have used VCD, store bought DVDs and SVCDs in this thing and they all play really well. The only thing I don't like about it is the way the battery is on the machine. I also don't like the door on it as it looks kinda flimsy and will not last that long. Overal though I love it and I use it all the time(as a SVCD player at home)

Bought this unit at Wal-mart and promptly returned it. While it played every DVD-R and DVD-RW that I put in it. It skipped horribly during the first 2-3 minutes of every one. After that they played fine, but the drive itself was extremely noisy. So noisy in fact, that it was distracting during movie playback. Opted for my money back.

Well I hate to say this but this wonderful little player has a bug. Major for some. If you try playing dual layer DVD's it will cause it to freeze at the layer break (my opinion, but others think so also).

Tried several discs and they all do it as long as they are dual layer. Single layer discs have no problem whatsoever. You will hear a grinding, then searching and the screen will freeze. This is starting to be widespread problem reported by other posters at another forum.

I just bought this player at walmart. Mostly for playing VCD and SVCD on CDR. It has played everything that I have put in there. It gets a really great picture.
It also has the audio and video cables allowing you to hook it up to your TV's RCA jacks. That works great also. For the price this is a great portable DVD player

This little player works great. Battery life is about 2.5+hrs. The manual says only 2 hrs, but I got at least 2.5 without any kind of warning appearing. DVD+R's work without a hitch, I only found a couple burned with Nero that gave me a couple of bugs, but the ones burned with RecordNow played flawlessly. Pretty good screen quality. Did not try any DVD-R's since I don't use them at the moment, but I've read second hand reports that they play fine also.
Instructions are a little weak, but you can probably figure them out. Make sure to set the "TV Display" to Widescreen to take advantage of a bigger picture on the 7" screen.
Played MP3's fine in a browser type display. VCD's all worked perfectly.
Also tried some CD-R's with saved mpegs and they played fine, jpegs are viewable also.
I'm assuming that this player is an upgrade to the 1711 model.
