I have had this DVD player for years and several of my friends have it. It is a great solution for playing video over the network.

Put all your media on a server in XVID or VOB and serve it up. With the correct firmware (see http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=459759&page=145), it will upscale video to 1080i through component.

I got this device for XMAS and I am so disapointed - it does not play DIVX content properly either over the network or from a DVD-+R disk.

The DIVX playback is very choppy - to the point where the video is almost unwatchable.

I have read forums that suggest that the latest firmware update is what is responsible for the broken DIVX playback.

Buyer beware - the AVEL Linkplayer2 is not very good at DIVX playback with it's current firmware.

I bought the player for network feature. Otherwise, there is plenty other to choose from. I have to say that I am pretty disappointed. I found many problems with playing files from the network and when I addressed to tech support (only by email) all I got is a poor excuse also by email. For God sake, there is no even english help/manual with the software included. They refere to things that you cannot check or understand.

Here are the problems I found:

1) AVI files captured by Minolta camera don't play
2) DVD VIDEO_TS files don't play the same way you would play DVD. Here is a test: if you share your drive DVD, insert there your DVD disk, and point AvelLink server to this drive, the player should play.

3) Tech support does not exist.
4) Web support very poor. Just check their Support FAQ page or try find some help. Good luck!!!

I say, stay away from this product. It cost me $220 too much. I wished I could return it.

Chris B.

This player has some features that few others have, but it has problems too.

The firmware is updated every month or two. This is not a good thing -- it shows that they can't get it right. Every new firmware tries to fix something and breaks something else.

Read the IO Data forums. There are a lot of unhappy people there. In particular, recent firmware upgrades removed the (unadvertised) feature of upscaling DVDs. They probably had to do this or get sued, but people are irate.

Personally, I'm glad I have it. It does what I need (network mpeg2 and mpeg4 at HD res) well enough to suffer through the things it does badly. But I'll be glad to dump it for something better someday.

This is a followup to my previous post.

A few additional comments:

Cons:
- WMV with DRM will not play without stuttering. Tech support has not been helpful.
- Tech support is poor, pretty much non-existent.

Pro's
- The LP2 continues to function as advertised. No hardware issues to report.
- After installing the Advanced Server Software I can now play DV avi files!
- Very solid in the way the server software, my PC and the LP2 communicate.

Even though it has a problem with DRM and tech support is poor, I still rate this player a 9. I do so because it playes so many different video file types flawlessly from my PC over a LAN. I no longer have to burn everything to DVD in order to view it on my TV. Family video and pictures are always available and at my finger tips.

Within 20 minutes of getting it out of the box it was playing movies on my HDTV from my computer's HDD via a LAN cable. Overall I am very pleased with the unit.

The Good:
- Easy to hookup
- Commercial DVDs play well and the video looks great
- Server software is solid, reliable and easy to use
- WMV, MPEG and DivX movies play over the LAN without stutter or hesitation and they look good as well.

The Not So Good:
- Does not play DV avi from HDD
- Navigation is a little clumbsy, needs some improvement.
- The D4 to component cable is not well made

If your looking for a way to play Movies, Music and Photos that are on your HDD on your TV then this is the way to go. Plays lots of formats. Now when I render a video file I can instantly find out how it will look on my TV. I am also using this setup as a DVR but with the added bonus of being able to easily modify the recorded video.

So far I am *very* satisfied with the features and capabilities of this machine! It plays almost all of my files (only a few divx files wouldn't work at all), and the picture quality is excellent! It plays my HD divx files flawlessly and DVD playback is great too (I particularly like how you can have the images stretched to fit a 16x9 set with little distortion).

The only issues I have are that you only have the option to PLAY ALL or SHUFFLE in an MP3 folder - you can't have it start at a certain file and continue on from there - the streaming audio sometimes won't connect - the remote has to be aimed "just right" to work without issues - and worst of all, THE POSTED REGION HACK DOESN'T WORK AT ALL!!! NOT EVEN SLIGHTLY!!! If someone has a different one that *will* function, PLEASE POST or email me!

Otherwise, I'm very happy and have no regrets getting this!

This player is terrible. The DVD drive is loud and whinny, enough to be heard over low volume parts in a movie.
This system will not play ripped or homemade videos over the network or USB drive. It will play individual VOB files but doesn't recognize an IFO file so you have to play all chapters of a movie individually.
Also had problems with colors on DVD's. Only the red would come through until the player was restarted several times.

Fantastic player, if you use it for what it's intended for. In fact, there's really no point to buy this player and pay the extra cost, unless you are using it for its networking capabilities and high-definition playback ability. I really don't understand some of the comments here about how it will/will not play certain DVD/CD media, as the DVD tray is only there to be used for commercial DVDs, which I'm sure it will play. If you want to watch a downloaded AVI, you should simply store it on you computer hard drive and stream it via the network (hardwired is always better). There are the rare AVIs which don't play (usually because of GMC being present) but 99% of the others will play, even ones with QPEL. All AVIs are upconverted to 1080i (or whatever is your highest resolution) if they are not protected.

Just got the player recently.
Plays pretty much everything I put in it. So wont repeat all other "good things". It is VERY good player.
Few this though which are in doubt:
1. DVDs splitted by DVDFab - second disk does not play. Maybe player is expecting menu or smth. I use RIDATA media DVD-R.
2. SVCD on black Memorex and some regular like RIDATA - on normal speed - "get tired" and starts to get errors, eventually stops or hangs. Suggestion was to use settings in setup and put its dvdrom speed to "very slow". It is much better now. Still got few errors.
3. AC3 play via network has lost sound on "Resident Evel 2". I have stopped the player and restarted, skip forward to the same place - got it playing sound OK. Strange ....
4. Dolby and DTS are on the display, however never got highlighted even if signal is dolby or dts. My Yamaha reciver shows that signal received from the player is dolby digital or it is dts. Something to be fixed by next firmware version ?
5. There is a server streaming software. Normal server is organized much better that advanced one, including auto-rescanning directories. Advance server - you have to register new file so you can see it at player menu.
6. Got lates available firmware - jpg slide show is good now. Before it was slow and showed file name for every picture which was anoying.
7. Menu in HD mode is looking ugly. Normal 480p is much better.
8. Was not successful in registering DivX VOD. Just was curious if anybody got it and using it. 14$ per month for membership to my mind defeats the purpouse....
There is very good review about the player:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific. ... p;PageId=3

Hope all things I have mentioned got fixed by firmware versions to come. People are also waiting for DVI support....
Cheers....

Additional notes: USB port for FAT or FAT32 Hard or Flash drives. All media play from here also.

720p or 1080i Upscales to component output.

Current comments Using April Firmware.

PAL videos must be region free or region 1. (does not have a region menu).

WMV-HD currently no DRM and plays video only (embedded WMA multichannel is not converted to AC3). (Can play non DRM versions from network using supplied Advanced server software WMA part is transcoded to MP3 stereo).

WMA -- plays CBR and VBR WMA all bitrates I have thrown at it except WMA10 6 channel and WMA10 lossless

VOBs -- play from network may be SD or HD res -- NTSC or PAL.

DivX -- certified by DivX -- SD or HD also DivX DRM.

Steeaming is somewhat limited as others have noted. I have one major gripe with this player, and that is it does a terrible job at PAL->NTSC conversion.. it will play a pal DVD on an NTSC tv, however it doesnt do the framerate conversion correctly and you get a brief pause in video every second.. I assume its playing frame 25 4.97 times in a row to make up for the framerate instead of using some intelligence.

The other gripe I have is not with the player, it is with support (or lack thereof). I could not find an actual email address or phone number for support; only a web form. I submitted my question 4 days ago and still have heard nothing from them. BOO!

All in all its a decent player I guess. the main reason I got a new player was for PAL support, and I thought all the extra features would be worth the extra money.. . Turns out that the extra features are great, but cruddy PAL playback. Hopefully I can return it still since support wont answer my queries.

This is an amazin DVD player, never seen anything like it. It played everything I put in. Tried all my DivX movies with different versions, no problem at all. The same for CD/DVD+R/W

I'm using the latest firmware with their advanced beta server. No problems there, although Server software is intuitive it can sure be more user-friendly.

I put in my DVD MP3, it does play them but there was not an option to play them all, or shuffle or that kind of thing.

One complaint I have is that it is not region free, so I can not play my non-us (Region 1) DVDs. But this was expected as they clearly said this in their documentation and at their site.

Also, a minor annoyance is the tray which is very slow when ejecting.

I still have a Lite-On LVD2002 but it did not play anything that I had recorded on 8x DVD media. Avel Link Player does not have that problem and overall I am very satisfied with it!

I helped arrange the Canadian Distro of this player between IO-Data and OnlyBestRated.Com out of Ontario Canada because the thought of getting the double reem of duty & courier service fees was to much extortion for me.

I am glad that I did. This player is fantastic. It has played everything I threw at it without issue.

It has a couple of odd quirks, but easy to live with. The network adaptor in the unit is not the most responsive to things like pings but this does not seem to be an issue duing playback of server hosted files.

The software that you must put on a PC to stream files only allows the player to see supported file types, which is supposed to include Mpeg 2 transport Stream files, but they do not show up. Renaming the .TS files to MPG solves this & the player plays them perfectly.

High def xvid/divx content plays fantastic.

I have set the system up with svideo & component cables and the player adjusts all content to your chosen output. Quite fantastic.

The remote could be a bit better, but that is a very minor issue.

I would reccomend this to anyone 250$ US or 325$ CDN buring a hole in their pocket!

I just got my IO Data Avel LinkPlayer in yesterday. I was going to wait until I tried more of the features before I posted here, but I’m so impressed that I just had to go ahead and get on here and gush.

The first thing I did was to put in a factory DVD and the picture is crystal. I’m using a standard s-video connection, so I cannot attest to the HD capabilities, yet!! As for playing different disc formats and file types, I wasn’t able to experiment yet. I was too busy running my cat-5 to get it connected to the network!!!

That said, once I plugged it into the network, it pulled an address using DHCP and was talking. Before trying anything, I told it to upgrade the BIOS. It downloaded and installed the new BIOS without my intervention via the internet connection. I couldn’t believe how easy it was.

I went and installed the file-serving software on my PC. I rebooted my pc, selected the directories where my various types of media are, and was done. I went to the player and it already was showing me my PC as a selection (the DVD in the Tray being the other selection). I looked briefly through most of the movies I had and it played them flawlessly (better than my PC, ironically, which often gets confused which codec to use because I’ve loaded so many). There was mild ‘slurring’ on one movie in the dark regions where, but I haven’t verified that’s not in the coding. I played XVID as well as various versions of DIVX encoding (3, 4, & 5). It played all flawlessly, except as noted above.

I also briefly had it show me some slides (jpegs) which worked fine, and played some music files (.wma). The remote is relatively small, and doesn’t seem to require being pointed right at the player like some others I’ve seen. Of the features I’ve tested so far, I’m very impressed. The only mild complaint I have is that during some playback of .avi's, the image on my TV seems to shrink slightly (not filling the screen horizontally). I haven't had time to investigate this yet to see if it's a problem with the player. It could very well be a bad encoding job. It didn't do this on all movies.

This is all a very pleasant surprise because I also own a Liteon LVD-2001. It was fun and cool for a while, but what a piece of junk it was. The color component of the s-video never worked, and finally the composite died as well. It never played movies very well, being jerky, or having large pauses in the video, blocky. It was just horrible. All those movies that played badly on the Liteon now play flawlessly on this Avel Linkplayer.

The only place I could find this player for sale was on the manufacturers web site: http://www.iodata.com/

BTW – The mfg. doesn’t claim this, but I saw someone post that it has a PCM slot that will take a wireless card. IT DOES NOT. It has a standard 10/100 ethernet/fast-ethernet port. (my personal preference, anyway)

Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. I’ve decided to go ahead and rate this player a 10 for just being way ahead of the competition, and doing so with such a steady platform.

The latest firmware is allowing me to play 108OI and 720P TS files. WooHoo. It does it so well that for this alone I give it a 12 out of 10. I could almost care less about WMV9 and DRM which is coming with the next firmware update. With WMV9/DRM coming in the next release this might just be the future for HD-DVD. It will easily be out nearly a year before the Blue Ray even shows up. Still with HD-DIVX and TS file support makes this a winner.

Cosider this a HIGH DEFINITION MEDIA PLAYER NOW and not just a DVD player with network functions and HD output. It really plays High Definition files no cheap upsampling.

Its in a league by itself.

The latest firmware looks to have corrected all the minor problems I was having before. But before you consider what the DVD player can do on its own you should also look at the software that comes with it.

Basic Server software with the future that MCE 2005 will also interface with it is a major plus. There are as expensive to more expensive DVD players that do this but dont nearly have the capabilities of this dvd player. How great it is to leave DIVX movies and Our Digital Pictures and MP3's on my server and just stream everything to the DVD player. JPG also look incredible in 1080i for those with digital camera's who like me has a wife that complains that all our pictures are in computer land. The second half of this DVD player begins to shine when you network it with your computer. Plus the software is well secured because you can exclude connections by MAC address which is easily seen in the menu and back of the HD-DVD player. A nice feature for those of us who dont like visitors snooping around.

Also the BIOS update on this had to be the easiest ever upgrade. Simply tell it to update and it connects to the internet and updates itself. No need to burn it to disc and update if you have it connected to the internet.

A solid machine. It's great at streaming mpeg/avi/xvid/divx files across my network. I would give it a 10, but it is lacking in the music navigation area -- slow to jump to different artists. Hopefully this will be fixed in future firmware versions. I would definately recommend this.

Comments:
There are some minor glitches in the firmware, but I believe it will be fixed pretty soon because the company's support people are very responsive. Most of all I like that it can play the library of media filed resided on the network NAS server (about 300 GB).
