Most media works great.

However SVCDs need to be cdr not cdrw b/c it sometimes skips with cdrw in svcd.

vcd,mp3 is great
much better menus than the pioneer 343, more outputs too!

doesn't have the cheap feel that the pioneer does
feels like you spent a good amout of dough

Dirt Cheap, looks good, and it plays mp3s as a bonus. I've been playing SVCD and VCD with no problems at all...and the DVD is awesome also.

Only complaint is I don't like the remote. I have a Sony TV and it won't control it even though its suppost to be a universal.

I baught this player no lonmger then 4 hours ago
and am already blown away. mp3 works excellent
(8char dos name "-"'s spaces and spec chars are
represnted by a snowflake)
SVCD worked great a few minniscule chops near
end of first disc and few scattered throughout disc
2 but didn't affect it much
VCD worked verry well. no problems

for the 275 canadian clams I payed, good job
Hitachi

1 bad thing! when the DVD player starts up the
picture is grey, so you have to stop the DVD enter
the setup go to video options and place the cursor
on one of the settings to make it in color. otherwise
it would have recieved a 9. it's happend like all
times I started it. if you don't care about the 10
seconds it takes to fix the prob, don't worry, I'm not!

10/10 is what i'm rating this baby. Before i went out and bought this player i had the choice of this, the pioneer 343 and a samsung one...not sure the model #, but this thing will play virtually anything you throw at it and for its price $300 CDN you can't go wrong. CDR/CDRW/VCD/SVCD/MP3 all work in this thing. I've basically tried every media i could get my hands on and this thing doesn't reject it. Plays clear and perfect. The only reason i didn't pick up the pioneer 343 was the lack of mp3 playability...i like listening to mp3's on a wide scale, so i bought this hitachi.

My only beef with this machine is that lack of buttons on the machine itself and the configuration of the buttons on the remote...i mean the return button is stuck away in a bunch of other buttons when it should be put into a more succluded area. It doesn't have a job switch/dial which i would've liked that the samsung had...but oh well...nothing major.

I really like this Player, plays everything I want it too, not like the Hitachi DV-P305U that I bought last year, I wish I would've waited for this one. I also copied a movie in Mpeg format straight to a TDK CD-RW and it had no problem playing it!!! I'm very satisfied with this DVD PLayer! So far I only tried a VCD, Mpeg, and a disk of MP3's and they all worked with no
problems...

The Disks I used for were-
VCD: Memorex Black CD-R 80min 700mb
MP3's: Memorex Black CD-R 700mb
Mpeg: TDK CD-RW 74min 650mb

So there I was, in the DVD section, deciding between the Pioneer 343 and the Hitachi P415U. The Hitachi was 10 bucks more, but it played MP3's so it said. But the Pioneer had great reviews here on vcdhelp.com. Oh what to do, would the Hitachi play my VCD's?

The answer: You betcha! And it played my CDR of +100 mp3's. This is my first DVD player and it looks real sharp, much better than what my sister's Toshiba, although it might be because of my Sony Wega tv. Played real, store bought, hollwood DVD's real sharp. I'm definetaly satisfied and happy I paid the extra 10 beans to play mp3's

Comments:
I recently went to buy a DVD player with support for vcd and svcd. The Hitachi was excellent for picture quality and features. However, while playing SVCD, the 415u would "hiccup" at several points on the disc, making the sound go out-of-sync until the movie was stopped are restarted at that point. At first I thought it might be my SVCD, but I tried encoding a fresh svcd from and mpg2 using svcd complaint settings in tmpgenc. Sure enough, after about 4 - 6 minutes into the video, the picture would freeze and then would resume with the sound out-of-sync. I went with the Pioneer DVD-343 instead - while not having as many bells and whistles as the 415U, it played all my VCDs and svcds - even the VCDS that were encoded with non-standard mpgs that the Hitachi would NOT player smoothly. I am glad I went to pioneer! :) ALSO - I called tech support for Hitachi - they said that this player DOES NOT support SVCD. What is odd about their claim is that while the manual says nothing about SVCD, the player has a L.E.D. light which displays SVCD. So either Hitachi engineers are clueless - that they would included an LED light to indicate a format which the laser doesnt read (very dumb) OR Tech support is so clueless that they dont even know a product and are willing to essentially call me an idiot for saying it supports SVCD just because there is an LED light placed on the player for it. They told me they wont support that format because the manual does say anything about it!!! HA HA. I think Hitachi makes a good player, but they are clueless as to what their products actually can (or can't) do. If you NEVER EVER plan on using SVCD, then this player is great as the picture quality is ultra crisp. BUT if you want to be able to use SVCDs (which are much better than VCD) then I would hold-off on that player until tech support or the manufacturer makes up its (their) mind(s) as to what's up with it.

Really happy with it, nice and cheap and full of features.

Have played 14 vcds and 3 diff svcds all without a problem. Images are crisp and clear on my sony vega.

MP3 function, despite not being discussed at all in the manual is rather nice. I don't think there is a random function for MP3s but they layout is cool, all in their own folders, with partial names.

I will be comparing with Samsung M301 soon and let u all know

Comments:
Relatively cheap player, with all the features of the more expensive players. It has played everything that I have thrown at it so far. It has all 3 video outputs (component/SVHS/composite), both digital audio outputs (optical/coaxial), DUAL Lasers, a multibrand remote, Zoom, up to 128x scan, and it even looks cool with its silver housing. The only things that it is lacking are, karaoke, progressive scan and on-board Dolby Digital and DTS decoding... but hey, for the price, you can't beat it!!!

I was first going to buy and Apex AD-703, but all the sales people that I talked to told me that the Apex machines are always being returned, so I decided to compare the highly rated Pioneer DVP-343, with the Hitachi DV-415. Both were very similar in quality, but the Hitachi far out-numbered the Pioneer in features and it was also slightly cheaper. So I bought the Hitachi DV-415, and am gald I did.
