I had this dvd player for a while now and i have no big problems. It plays everything except jpeg, divx or xvid. I have it hooked up to my home theatre system and it works perfectly. Plays cds, cdrw, mp3, vcd, dvd- from what I have tested.

Damn good DVD player.
I bought it in December 1999, and it's still running strong.
I'm using Nero for my DVD burns.
DVD+RW discs work fine. No problems encountered.
.mp3's work fine too (including VBR), although I've not tried an entire DVD of .mp3's yet. I'll try that soon enough.

No bitsetting hack has been needed for this drive to work with my +R and +RW discs. I've not tried a -R or -RW disc.

I'll be trying out the DVD region hack in a couple of weeks. I have some region 2 discs coming from the UK, and I'm curious to see if I can play them here in Canada.

Overall, I've been very happy with Hitachi.

The only problem is very minor: it's slow to load discs, but then again it's 1999 technology too.

Purchased player almost two years ago; used it sparingly. Recently, I've noticed that player often freezes or skips chapters near the end of DVD-ROM discs. DVD-R (generic 4X) discs skip chapters frequently, making movies unwatchable.

VCD and SVCD support is excellent, although it takes a while for them to load. Unit is slow in loading most all media.

This thing has played everything I put into it. Gave movies to friends that can't play on their players. I only gave it a 9 because I thought it loaded a bit slow but everything else plays MP3, VCD etc. I returned a Panasonic cause it wouldn't play the movies and mp3's well

I had this player for a long time and it played everything... just a couple days ago I finaly got a dvdburner and tried dvd-r and +4 burned at 4X worked great ... the only problem I been having and this is only on dvd -/+ r it won't play pal I don't think its this player more likely my tv since it tells me to check my tv system and it allways played ntsc/pal on vcd/svcd just fine.
I used several types of media and they all work but for all my stuff I only use Fujifilm they real good and won't play bad after lots of uses.

Great player.

bought one about 6mo ago, and it works great. plays mp3 and svcd and dvd's without problems. got another one last week which skips on even first generation DVDs. returned it and got another defective one. must be a bad batch going around (the same dvd's play fine in older identical model). they also play fine in JVC300BK model. good luck if a recent purchase, keep that box and receipt!

(S)VCDs work fine on CD-R, but I've tried several brands of CD-RW and DVD-RW for VCDs & SVCDs, and all have failed to play. (Most CD-RW have worked for mp3 files.) I've also had problems trying to get some DVDs to work on DVD-RW discs.

Very disppointed in those aspects, as my "clunky" $55 Apex AD-1200 DVD player handles all of them just fine!

This does NOT play dvd-r, so I'm not sure why it
says that on the vcdhelp specs here. I tried several
dvd-r discs made with a Pioneer AO3 and a set top
dvd-r recorder. It sorta plays them, but it
encounters MANY freezes, skips and lock-ups. It
also takes a long time to load up a disc. Ironically,
DVD-RW seemed to be ok.

VCDs and store-bought dvds seem to work great.
But, I returned it because I wanted DVD-R
compatibility.

Plays Great! Was going to put chapters on my vcd's/svcd's, but turning off the menu, I can skip to the next 5 minutes just by hitting the next chapter button. Also, The disc navigation feature is so sweet. It loads pics of points in the movie (like chapter selection on a DVD) that you can skip to. Although I haven't been able to get a very high bitrate with XVCD (starts to stutter at 1300kbs), the picture stills looks good. My money was well spent

ok....i have bought and returned dvd player after dvd player...started with an apex, waste of time.....went on to a white-westinghouse dv-200, not bad, nice compatibility but my got......glithing and skipping and pausing after a week or so.....next the Hitachi DV-p315u .....good, actually great, but a lil' bit picky about cd-r's and no mp3 support.....
this is the one for me, plays any and all cd-r's i through at it, vcd in 24.97 or 29.97fps, mp3's from 96 to 320, and platinum, silver, mid-blues, everything so far as cd-r's......very sweet for the 240 cdn i shelled out for it (and no pausing on layer change like some models of dvd players that support cdr, cdrw, mp3, vcd and svcd) actually hard to find a good dvd player that does all that and still handles dvd's well (has component video and optical audio out too!
well worth the 240, hell well worth the 310 (me and my brainwashed self went for the 3 yr extended garanty...yeah i know i can't spell)

This is the best unit i have laid my eyes upon
It plays everything for me, VCD, SVCD.
Ive tried over 12 brands of CDRs , no problem
Ive tried 3 kinds of CDRW, no problem
SVCD plays perfectly, MP3 plays fine

My only problem is it takes a long time for the unit to read the discs when you insert them (approx 15 - 30 sec) but other than that its the best $240 CDN i have spend this year.

I had it for a single day and had to exchange it. Too bad there is no Random function on the MP3. It also seems that the player remote can't be program on the Marantz RC5000i (nor the Pronto). I have tried everything and was not able to make it work. Exchange it against a Pioneer DVD-440.

Works great! We love the layout of the remote.

Plays everything we tried so far,

SVCD was choppy on a memorex 650cdrw, but played perfect on a cdr.
Vcds play great, burned with vcdimager, nero or ezcd.
Mp3s play great also.
Dvds play flawlessly.. we also LOVE the bookmark feature that this player has.
XVCDS,and lvcds play great also. never tested xsvcd yet.
MPEGS burned (as a mpeg data cd with ezcd5 using a CURSOR 700 CDRW (silver cd, produced by gigastorage for futureshop) work great!!

I am very impressed with this player and especially that it will pay mpegs burned on cdrw is a definate plus!

I would definely recommend this player to anyone wanting a quality and versitile machine without costing a fortune.

We rate this player a 10!

At first i went with the Toshiba 2710 because Consumer Reports gave it a higher rating than the Hitachi Dvp 415. Well, the toshiba wouldn't play svcd's so I returned it and went with the Hitachi. It's great! It's plays all formats on all medias. I have two problems with this machine; it claims to have a random feature for mp3's but only with certain types of media. I have yet to figure out which brand supports this. Also, it is horribly choppy with my 700mb cd-r (cursor brand) for mp3's and will not play the whole track. Aside from these two small problems, everything is great. Picture quality, on screen features, price and it's ability to play what it claims makes this player earn it's keep. I recommend it.

Very very Happy with this machine, I had boughten a panasonic dvd player about 2 months ago.. Everyone at the store said that the panasonic machine was top of the line. But it didnt play svcds as i learnt only later. I mean that machine i had before was quality. You can tell that this machine is on the CHEAPER side.. But who cares, the picture quality is great, and it plays svcds, Which are amazing soo crisp and amazing.. So i gave this player a 8. I would reccomend it to anyone!
