| I've read in a few different places that this player won't read a DVD-R but I've had no problems with it. I used a Pioneer A05 and Verbatim DVD-R to backup a DVD movie and it works great. |

I have got mixed results from this unit... for some odd reason, it won't play a lot of my COMMERCIAL dvds! it'll just say "no disc". but, some work. and svcd's seem to work. vcd's on acer and sanyo 650mb worked. just a little slow on the read.
i burned a dvd on my pioneer a05 onto maxell 2X media, and the player read it flawlessly. |

Unit performs 100% per advertised claims as far as I can tell. Specifications state that user-recorded media should NOT be used...period.
To expect it to do anything else is not reality-based.
"DO NOT play CD-ROM, CD-I, CD-R and DVD-ROM in this player!" (p.7, english section of user manual)
One can conclude the unit was designed to play only commercially prepared discs that comply with the industry specs, thus warranting the standard logos we all know.
It should be remembered that the optical characteristics of recordable media differ significantly from those of mass-produced media.
I have experienced 0 faults while playing commercial product and I've had unit about a year.
Sound is excellent. I've used both digital coax and optical patch to Dolby 5.1 system with great results. Very low noise. Terrific remote functionality.
I also get the "no-disc" error when trying to play my own recorded media, but then, I didn't have false expectations.
It would have been nice, but it is NOT the fault of the player or the design. |

Very new to this game, but thought I'd share DVD results since not many other reports for this player.
Sony DVD+RW: Good Burn (worked on PS/2 and buddy's Sony) but got "NO DISC" on Hitachi.
Memorex DVD+R: Works on Hitachi, PS/2 and buddy's Sony player. |

Works:
Memorex White label Blue Back 32x CD-R 80-min
Failed:
Memorex White Label looks to be gold backed 8x CD-R
Philips 74-min looks to be silver 2x CD-RW
Used Tmpgenc to encode uncompressed AVI and Divx files, used VCDEasy to test VCD 1.1, and Adaptec EZCD 5.1 Video CD wizard for 2.0 both worked fine. Nero worked but menu was messed up. |

After reading all of your posts, I try all CD-R/CD-RW brand names, no name. None of them work.
I did an extensive research and comparisons with other DVD players. That DVD player should not play CD-R/CD-RW or MP3.
The description of the DVD player does say DVD/CD/VCD, if you compare it with other player who does say DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW (video mode)/DVD+RW/VCD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW and MP3. The DVD player should work fine with DVD/VCD (retail, not burn) and CD (retail, not burn).
Your CD-R/CD-RW or MP3 is working, congratulation to you.
Please, keep it for you, because when you post it, people like me, have hope, and will try everything to get it to work until they start believing the player is not good.
When I read your post, and try everything, the first thing on my mind was "I got screwed". After comparing DVD players and see the difference, I understand why, it's not working. |

Help! Hitachi DVP305-U DVD player? I've tried every brand I could find Maxell, TDK, Comp USA, Ricoh, Smart & Friendly, HP, Fuji, & Digital Media. Even the brands posted as working such as Digital Media(Princo) and Fuji did not work. No luck burning a VCD with CD Creator 5. I keep getting "No Disk" message. All the CD-RW's I burned work fine in my Sony DAVS300. What am I doing Wrong?

The player's documentation says that VCD's work (and they do), but it says nothing about SVCD. I've tested burned SVCD's and they work great. I haven't tested MP3s yet, but the front display panel of the player has "MP3" written in it...
The only CD-R's that I've come across that will work flawlessly in this machine are PINE and PRINCO. You'll notice that these have a very silver bottom to them with a slight tinge of blue. Mitsui SILVERs will also work... do not confuse these with plain old Mitsui's... "Mitsui Silver" has a different coloured bottom than the regular "Mitsui". |

| I have had this player for a while now. It plays PIONEER DVD-R and DVD-RW media but if I want to make my own vcd I have to use cd-rw media and that media takes up to 2 min to load sometimes. It will play commercial vcd just fine. The remote is good but when I press a button on the remote the player is a little slow to respond. The fact that this player is slow to respond and it doesn't play cd-r is what brings my overall score to a 7. Too bad I can't upgrade or modify this player like I can modify an apex player. The main thing this player has going for it though is it's apperance. It looks good and fits nicely into my entertaiment center. |

This device is terrible. Every hour it skips when playing back DVDs, it can't handle the CDR VCDs I've tried in it, and I've even had DVDs get stuck in the machine.
I dunno why everyone keeps saying this is a great player, when it's absolutely terrible. x.x |

| My dvd player is great, except when trying to play home made vcd discs. I tried burning vcds on many cdr brands with no success, got the NO DISC readout. Found a brand at Office Max that has a silver color in it. It's made by Prime Peripherals CD-R80. It says on the label professional recordable compact disc. This one works folks, |

I wish I could have known about this site earlier.. I definitely would have saved a lot of time tryin to determine why my cdr's just simply would not work.. The unit always gave a "no disc" error..
This Player does play Store-bought DVDs well, but nix the CDRs and the CDRW.. Memorex and CompUSA brands simply don't work |

I've tried:
Memorex CD-R 74 min (slimline case)
Sony CD-R (CDQ-74CN)
Fujifilm CD-R (74 Min 650MB/Mo
TDK data CD-R (part # 85193)
VCI CD-R recordable (74 min multispeed)
All of the above were recorded at 1X speed to try and avoid any problems. None of them work in this DVD player. They play great in my Sony Playstation 2 but not at all here.
Now, I'm not saying I hate the machine. On the contrary, I rate it a full and solid 9 out of 10. Just wish it would play my Effin CD-Rs! THAT...would warrant a 10.

| I have tried Maxell CD-R, Maxell CD-RW, Memorex BLACK CD-R, Cursor, Kodak Ultima, Verbatim AZO Blue, none of them work!!! The Maxell CD-RW at least starts to read, but after 45 seconds or so, quits. The Memorex BLACK doesn't even bother checking to see if a disc is in the player or not, I think it just thinks there is just darkness, like when the DVD player is closed with no disc in it. Please e-mail if you know of any brand name that work (can't find some of the ones that people report work in any stores here). Thanks. |

Well if you need hacks for this and don't live in the US or Canada you can try http://www.709firmware.fsnet.co.uk/faq.html and
http://709online.com/home.htm because it's essentially the same player as the samsung. They do have a D/L for you EPROM burners for the Hitachi-305 particularly. As far as CDRs are concerned it's not the same story. Some of the CDR's that members have commented work, like Pine, don't do a thing in this Hitachi. in fact, I've currently tried Verbatim DataLifePlus (A20 Blue Technology), Maxell CD-R Music 74 (for audio recording though I've heard that this is only important for stand alone copiers, not computer based copiers, so don't waste your money on these more expensive CDs), FujiFilm, VCI, Maxell CD-R (standard), Sony CD-R (CDQ-74CN). I have orded Princos that I'll try, a TDK that i'm burning as I type, and I'll try some of the others suggested here. As part of this test i'm burning an Audio CD at 1X (as some have suggested). If there are any other suggestions please email me. If they work I'll post the results here and in the comments section of this site. But so far this is one sad DVD when it comes to CDRs. The fact it's brother the 505 comes with a second laser scanner that guarantees CDR's can be burnt may account for it. Pay the money honey :P |
