I purchased this DVD recorder at Costco for $149. My limited purpose is to copy some old home VHS tapes to DVD, and to transfer digital recordings from my Comcast Motorola 6412 HD cable DVR to DVD for editing on my PC (add menus, chapters, and bitset DVD+R to DVD-ROM). I do not use this recorder for time shifting or recording live tv (both done by Motorola STB).
For my limited purposes this unit is good. The quality of the HQ (1 hr) and SP (2 hr) modes are good, especially using the S-Video downconverts of HD material. Did one 6-hr VHS transfer just to test it - watchable, but pixellates and blocks during action sequences. I've made about 20 DVDs to date and am happy with all but the 6-hr one.
I've heard some bad things about long-term quality, but if it breaks Costco is good about replacing without asking questions.
If you're looking for a basic unit to get TV and VHS into digital format for editing on a PC, this beats out any equally-priced capture card for ease of use and quality is at least the same, if not better. |

Great Value with all the Basic features.
This unit should last a while since the drive doesn't over heat like alot of other cheap models. 4hr record quality is the best I have seen.

I bought this for the price ($149 on Sale at Frys).
Pros:
- Price
- Firewire In at Front
Cons:
-No HD
-Tuner recognizes only 2 cable channels from my Comcast box (Tuner not used now)
- Remote is very poor (slow to recognize, very small buttons)
- Setup interface has bugs. Examaple: All timer fields must match, other the interface will not allow you to modify a single field before making sure all others logically match first. This is very annoying. Also, timer does not delete past entries, you caqn only modify once you have entered someting. (???)
- DVD created has something different/wrong? It gives error whiel reading it with NEro recode, DVD Shirnk, or DVD Decrypter. I was only able to read it with Ulead Moview DIc creator 3 but with a very specific sequence of steps otherwise it does not work.
-Quality of picture it is just OK, comparable with standard TV (NO HD, or DVD quality).
For the money, do not expect more. Most of my DVD and editing is done in my PC so I only need very basic DVD recorder to capture some tv programs for viewing later and not archiving. If you have higher expectations or you can afford more buy something different. |
