MP3 WMA CVD? $150 over 1 year 5 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: I have had the DVD Player 3 years. Here are the problems: -2 years after purchasing, the digital audio out (coax surround sound output) stopped working periodically. Audio would disappear and come back later. Sometimes would not work at all. I had to switch to stereo all together within 1 year of the problem starting because audio went away, and never came back. -Does not play some higher quality discs. One move in particular that never works is Matrix 1. I have tried a few copies and none will play. I talked to a guy a blockbuster with same player and same problem with The Matrix. He had to PAY for GE to send out a new lens, and it was within warranty. I do not know why GE claimed this common defect was not covered by warranty. -1.5 years after purchasing player began problem reading discs all together. Sometimes it will not read any disc what so ever. LCD screen on front shows mostly garbage and player makes a muffled grinding noise. Sometimes this will happen 3 times a week, sometimes it will not have a problem for months. This problem has persisted for the past 1.5 years, since it originally appeared. -mp3 playback has no random option. Also, mp3 songs tend to get cut short between track changes. The on screen list of mp3 tag info is not well formatted. A lot of truncation of song titles, very few songs listed on screen, etc. Overall, I have had a horrible experience with this machine. A rating of 5 was only because when the system did work, it had good quality audio and video. However, nothing above what a person should expect from DVD in general, after all it is digital technology. I would not purchase this hardware again, even if the price has dropped to $50 in some places.

CVD? $? 90 days 9 of 10 Comments: I have had this DVD Player for about three years purchased from WALLY WORLD. Plays DVD+R pretty good sometime with the cheap off the wall named media might not play 1 disk out of 10. I think sometime it does not play DVD+R do to the label and Ink i put on the cheaper named brand disk. I use Nero Burning Rom 6. Plays VCD and SVCD also with no problem with any cd-r disk have not tried cd-rw's. Only thing sucks about this dvd player is there is not power (on/off) button on the remote, sucks to get off the couch.

Works well with DVD's bought in-store, but since purchasing an LG4040B DVD burner this past year, I have been playing DVD-R movies copied using DVD Decrypter / DVDShrink and Nero 6.0. The copied movies played perfectly for awhile, but... I'm recently starting to experience playback problems (pixelation, audio out of sync with video, picture pauses, lines through the picture). Anyone else out there with the same problems? I'm thinking of purchasing a newer SONY with progressive scan and smooth slow, smooth scan features. Anyone with any experience with these units?

And plays DVD+R when you set the booktype in DVDInfoPro to DVD-Rom!

N/A No rating Comments: Have tried several times to play DVD-R, and DVD-RW, the message says no disc! Burned the movie with DVDXCopy Express, DVDXCopy, the same. no disc. But when I ripped the movie, and burned it as VCD, or SVCD they all worked. It was a gift, if I had bought it I would be mad. The other features are very nice, I just would like to be vable to watch dvd-r movies on it.

CVD? $100 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: Seems like I am not the only person with a problem with this player. Oddly, my player is having some major problems with playing DVDs. VCDs and SVCDs load with absolutely NO problem, but DVDs can be really really touchy (ejecting and closing upwards of 20-30 times just to get it to read). It also tends to give a grinding noise when it doesnt want to read a DVD. A simple solution to this (for me anyway) was to go to Wal-Mart and get a cheapie CD/DVD lens cleaner. It allieviates the problem for 2-3 months (depends on use really), and then it needs another cleaning. No clue why, but its a minor gripe really. The player is fairly solid in the playback department. I havent seen any major problems (it is a bit more sensitive to small smudges that another player I own doesnt even seem to notice), brings the rating up a bit. The rating is really based on the DVD-reading problem. Granted, this may be somewhat isolated, but be wary, as it may not give the longevity some people expect.

Only problem I have with it is that when you select parts of a movie via the index, it will tend to skip when it nears another index point. This really isn't much of a problem though. And yes, it has no remote power on/off...so what? When you get up to put the disc in, hit the button. When you get up to get the disc out, hit the button again.

CVD? $80 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: Purchased this player and installed the Apex703 firmware for the region/macro hack and it worked fine. After playing 2 DVDs, it stopped working (had to open it up to get the DVD out). Sent it back and they sent another. So far so good. I have played DVD+RW made with a Philips DVDR985A DVD+R/RW standalone video recorder. They play fine, but the menu flashes and has horizontal lines for some reason. I use the standard compatibility bit setting and Verbatim media. I then tried a recording with Verbatim DVD+R media. The early parts of the video were ok, but later on it started getting blocky and pausing for a second, then continuing. I have no idea why it is doing this. I have tried standard VCD and it plays fine. I have always tried 2100 bit rate SVCD and they also play fine. If you really want the macro/region hack, this is a good player, if it is not that important to you, I think a cheap Pioneer (or some other brand) is better. Sometimes I notice the lip sync problem that many of the Apex players have had. Not that bad, and not that often though. Also, their are more artifacts in the video compared to my Pioneer.

CVD? $80 N/A 1 of 10 Comments: I bought this player played about 3 months ago and applied the regionfree/macrovision firmware hack. It has played dvd's and xsvcd's flawlessly for the past three months. However, yesterday it suddenly stopped working. Now, whatever I put in the tray tries to load, but the "no disc" error is displayed (I can hear the disc spinning inside even after the error is displayed). I tried to unplug the unit to reset it several times to no avail. This unit gets a 1 for lack of longevity. 3 months is an unacceptable lifetime for a dvd player regardless of its great compatability.

However, with all those in mind it still is an excellent DVD/VCD player. I had gone to a store and it dropped from $99.95 to $59.99 with a 10% off deal right before my eyes. I wish that it would play AVI/WMA/RM and so on and so forth, but you can't be picky for the pricing.
