Excellent Player. Played everything just fine until today ... Burned some DVD-R's and this thing does not want to play them at all. I have used so far only Optodisc DVD-R media, so maybe the problem might be with the media.
As far as the player goes, it would get a perfect 10 if not for my recent DVD-R problems. |

great player....this is for all you people that bitch about the powerswitch problem....Get a Reciever unit with an extra power plugin on the back. Plug in the dvd player and leave the power button on. When you use the remote to turn on the reciever...the dvd player automaticly comes on...and since your not going to play your dvd without your surround sound reciever...its not inconvenient.....PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

| 10, uh... ok, 9. The remote just isn't user friendly. Bought it mainly for camcorder home videos converted to vcd's. Was somewhat satisfied with vcd quality until I discovered xsvcd. Wow, now I am thoroughly amazed. Crystal clear (almost)dvd quality (up to 5000kbits) on all of the cdr/cdrw's I've put thru it. |

| Great Player for 88.97 at Wal-Mart. Plays all my DVD+R, +RW, VCD's and SVCD's. The MP3 cds work well except for the fact that it does not support full ID tags. You cannot turn it on and off from the remote. But hey you can't beat the price for all the stuff it plays and also has a firmware hack. |

| A great player. I made a bunch of dvd's on my sony dru-120a burner and I was having compatability issues. I bought a lot of dvd players and they would not play all of my dvd movies. a bunch of them would only play about 5 or 6 of my movies [I bought a sony dvd player that said it would play dvd+rw but it didn't play any of them. That's funny] but this GE player played plays all of them. |

Works well enough for VCD/SVCD created with tmpgenc and VCDEasy. I've used CD-Rs made by several companies, and I've used 74-min, 80-min, 80-min overburned to 82 minutes, and 99-min media with no problems.
PBC and VCD/SVCD title graphics and menus with numeric selection work. The only failing it has is that it tends to cut out of tracks a second or two early, which is a minor nuisance if you want multiple tracks that should go smoothly from one to the next.
DVDs play fine for the most part, but the picture is a little dark. It's had hiccups on a couple rented DVDs, I wiped them off with my shirt and they played fine. Since there was no visible dirt or scratch it's probably a little more sensitive than some other players.
I played a few MP3s on it, and they worked fine. No long filename support of any kind, just straight ISO9660 8.3 names and no ID3 tags.
Just like everybody else, I think that the big mechanical power switch on the front of the unit is a little cheesy when you can do everything else from the remote, but it's not a big deal.
The remote really sucks. It's fine as long as all you ever want to do is play/stop/prev/next, but things like the menu controls, fast-forward/reverse, and pause are just tiny buttons randomly mixed in with other tiny buttons. Even after months of use I always have to look to find them.

This is my first DVD player, and I have had it 2 days.
I wanted the APEX AD-1500, but I could not find any. Then I looked for the APEX 1100W, but I could not find any with the favorable serial number (1meg version) SO I pick up the GE 1100 PB
SVCD and VCD plays back great using TMPGEnc-2.5 and VCDEasy, Menus and chapters also work.
I usually only use Gigabyte media, and it worked perfectly.
Problems seen so far:
If I pause or stop a DVD for more than 3-4 minutes, when I hit play, the play back is very-very slow and choppy. If I hit stop, menu, and play all is well.
The Macro / Region hack work well on my GE 1100 PB (using the 1100 PA update)
I am very happy with the picture and sound quality when playing DVDs (and that is to my 10 year old AIWA)
I am very happy with the sound quality when playing MP3s. It sounds much better than on my PC.

Tested:
Plays CDRW with MP3 (ISO9660 level 1 only!)
Plays DVD-RW with DVD video
I paid $99 for this player at Radio Shack (to replace my dead Raite 715) and I am quite satisfied with its performance.
The player I purchased has the CS4955 chipset. Firmware hack for region code/macrovision hack works well. Just put the single file on a CD-RW with ISO9660 level 1.
Player does PAL->NTSC conversion but the conversion is not as good as the Raite 715 (it is a little bit blocky scaling and a little jerky) |

| The two best parts about this player is it is a good combination of price and quality and you can easily update the firmware to get rid of the macrovision and region coding. I bought mine from Walmart for $107. This is a quality player that works great. The only thigs that are missing is no support for jpeg photo files and the mp3 support could be better. VCD ans SVCD play fine on CDR or CDRW media. The worst thing about this player is the manual power switch so you can,t power the unit on and off from the remote. Aside from that a great player at a nice price. |

Walmart is now selling the GE 1101 PB model. The hack for the 1101PA
works on this model to enable loopholes and region free menu.
Download the hack from the link and burn a CD-R with the .asd file.
files size after unzip is 2.24KB. follow the directions and be sure
you have the cs4955 video chip. Worked just fine. Haven't tested
everything yet, but CD-R/CDRW VCD and Audio works no problem. and
verified the Macrovision is now disabled.
http://www.dvd-wizards.com/darrenk/Shinco/GE1101Ppatch.htm
As always, perform at your own risk.
This is a great dvd player and even has kareoke with 2 mic inputs.
Better quality construction than APEX.
have fun

Does an excellent job with SVCD & VCD, and does an adequate job with DVD. The lack of component video is common for this price spot, but the S/VCD compatibility is excellent. One odd note, when compared to the play of Apex 1100W, Philips DVD711 & 952, and PC via PowerDVD XP, this GE/Apex unit returns to the menu from various SVCD tracks about 2 secs early. Not a big deal, but annoying.
Also, tends to have an odd odor after an hour or two of use - same as most Apex I've tried. I don't think anything is wrong as this would be 4th Apex based unit to exhibit this odor ... none have died (so far!).
All types of CDR media that I can find have worked equally as well. |

| Just bought this baby from Walmart yesterday for $109. Although it has a few hicup at the beginning when reading the first DVD, it plays like a charm after I cleaned the disc with my shirt. I can't wait to ugrade the firmware to check out the loopholes menu and the process is very simple and it works extactly as I was told from www.dvd-wizard.com, thanks guys. Keep up the good work. And the baby works just fine with Macrovision off, now I can make a backup on the tape. I agree with the other people that it's a little bit unconvenient to turn on/off the power from the deck and the size is kind of big too. So, I can only give it 9. |

| BUY IT!!!! I put everything in it VCD SVCD CDR CDRW and o yeah DVD all worked perfectly. Even foreign VCD I bought from ASIA just awesome! I burned a SVCD worked like a charm. I highly recommend this player and only costs me $118 with tax from WALMART what a deal. Only downside which is nothing really is the presentation of the main menu of the player just a simple blue screen nothing big really. GREAT PLAYER!!!! |

| I got extremely Lucky. I bought this thing because I love Karaoke, and this is one of the few cheap models offering that feature. I didn't start learning about SVCD's and XSVCD's until I already had the machine. I immediately checked my owners manual and was saddened to see no mention of either. I was almost ready to take it back and buy a player that did offer it, when I found this website to list players offering it. Sure enough... I made an XSVCD using my Sony Digital Camcorder captured to my PC with a Pyro Firewire card, and Media Studio Pro V6.0. I then used TMPGenc to convert the DV AVI file to XSVCD format, and then burned it using Nero 5.0. The quality was nearly as good as DVD's I've rented!!! For anyone not owning this machine, and messing around with SVCD...Do yourself a favor and buy this or another machine that will handle XSVCD's it's worth it to watch these in 720X480 instead of 480X480...... |

Picked this up from Walmart for 119.00 after reading this and other boards. The CD-R firmware update went flawlessly. Say hello to VCR friendly land. Makes perfect (for vcr) tapes from every dvd I've tried. Played several MP3 CDRs. Sounds just fine.
I did not notice any quality difference between this and a Toshiba I was also testing. I don't see how you can go wrong with this, especially at the price. It has two sets of video outputs, digital and coax for sound and S-Video.
My shopping quest is over.
