Got this player and the wireless card on ebay. It took a little time to set up. I had to work to get the player to recognize my wireless network. Also, I had a lot of trouble with the server software from gateway, and am using the software from Govideo - D5 streaming software, and it works great so far. If you get one of these, there are a lot of places online to find out just how to tweak it so it will work for you. Wish there was more customization in the way you can search/organize your media settings, but for the price, you can't beat it. My home entertainment center is now a huge audio/video jukebox.

Both players (took me 2 months and a dozen phonecalls to get a replacement from Gateway) have the same problem - they connect fine to the Gateway wireless router on startup, but if the connection to the network is lost, they will try but never reconnect. You have to power the player off then back on. Otherwise, it works great streaming mpg, divx and mp3. Thinking of switching from wireless to wired. The supplied wireless PC card is useless elsewhere. Though it's probably made by linksys, there are no drivers or utility software available.

I just got this DVD Player from Gateway Store on final sale for $141.99 with the Wireless network card included. I updated the DVD with the included update for the wireless card, this is fast and painless; after this I installed the software on my PC to stream the media files to the DVD player.
I have to say that I was very impress with the results from the video and the quality of the audio, there is a problem on SVCD's; so be aware that the player stops after a few minutes of play on movies that play really well on my Toshiba DVD player.
This is not an issue for me because I only have a few SVCD's. Also the audio on SVCD is choppy, but it may be the way the SVCD was made.
For the money you pay I think is ok, also I still my toshiba looks better that this player; but the streaming aspect is great.
I watched a Dvix flick and it was great.

If you can find it get it; since this player are flying from the stores really fast.

Bought one at Gateway country store firesale (they are closing). A superb player that handles all kinds of dics. I tried CDR, CDRW, and a couple badly scratched up DVDs which didn't play on my SONY and DAEWOO playe, now they all all play flawlessly on this gateway. Gateway included a excellent manual and the construction of the player is pretty sturdy. The output quality is execellent on S-video. Player a build in 5.1 decoder and both type of digital out (optical and SPDIF). Can be modded region free via. remote control. I haven't tried the network aspect of the player but so far I am very impressed and recommands it highly.

Update.

Streaming video bandwidth limit is set in Filters.cfg. Simply edit the file to change the MPEGII limit! Note: Default is set for 3Mb/sec wireless, 5Mb/sec wired. Change the limit and you can import higher bitrate movies.

Streams Divx video by transcoding (converting to Mpeg II). The play AVI option is grayed out if the CPU speed is less than 1.2Ghz. You can change this limit by editing NetPlay.cfg, item "Transcoding CPU Speed=1200". Set it below your CPU speed and the play AVI option will be available.

I converted a DVD to Divx and streamed it from a P3@800Mhz. The video would stutter then play normally then stutter again. Apparently the Cpu couldn't convert fast enough. I'll try again on a faster server. It played several minutes flawlessly and looked great.

I noticed the wireless version no longer appears on the Gateway website. I use the wired version.

Agreed, this player rocks!

I bought it for its "connected" features. I wanted a media player to replace my old CD jukebox that has on-screen album/song management. I looked at loads of media streamers but in the end they were more expensive, and did less (often much less). Its like buying an inexpensive, full featured media streamer, and getting an integrated DVD player for free.

I read reviewers comments on several sites. The usual complaint about this player is that it always lists songs, albums etc. in alphabetical order. When you play an album, you're unlikely to want to hear the songs played in that order. This can be solved! The player displays song name etc. from the ID3 tags. However it lists the songs in the order it imports them, alphabetically. Using J. River's Media Center I had MC rename all the filenames using the pattern "Artist - Track - Song" and then reimported the music into the Gateway server program. Simple. Now all the song info displays correctly (didn't alter the tags) and the albums display the songs in track order.

Another complaint about the player is that you can only page up/down through the song lists. Not true. It displays the total number of any list at the top of the list. Simply enter a number on the remote and press "enter". The list will jump to that entry. Not as convenient as saying "jump to the M's" but much better than scrolling all the way from A to Z.

An overlooked feature is the ability to show thumbnails of your pictures. You can page through the thumbnails!

The next thing I want to do is convert some of my DVDs to DIVX and try streaming them. I'd like to put some favorite shows/movies on my media server. It works with MpegII but limits the bandwidth to 3Mb/sec so standard DVD MpegII won't work. I suspect the limit is in software and was put there to please the MPAA/RIAA pigopolists. The media server simply won't import an mpg with a bitrate exceeding 3mb/sec, it just ignores them. Perhaps a way can be found to fool the media server software into accepting a higher bitrate file.

The only thing the media player portion of this player lacks is a random play feature. My CD jukebox let me select a genre and it would play songs randomly. I don't know why this player doesn't have such a feature.

If this player had random play and no 3Mb/sec limit I would have given it a 10. I'd give it a 9 if they would only add random play.

Just a quick note to respond to the question regarding DiVX support. DiVX is ONLY supported as a streaming format. The player itself doesn't support DiVX, but he server software does. So the server transcodes the DiVX file into a format the player does understand (I believe it's MPEG2).

Okay this player is f#*#ing awesome ... I have it connected wirelessly to my home network. It will stream MPEG1/2/4 and DiVx movies to my TV. I have an HDTV and the progressive scan DVD Playing is amazing not to mention the wireless connectivity. The MPEG4 and DiVx capabilities are included with newly purchased DVD Players and for those who had purchased previously ... the software updates are available online at www.gateway.com This thing is just utterly amazing I would highly recommend this!
