The Infrared sensor is not working anymore. I thought it was the remote at first but after I tired using my friend's remote, it doesn't work either. Both remotes work well in his DVD player. Finding a suitable Universal Remote is not existent. Does anybody have any idea about the sensor?

Other than that, great machine esp. price!

when I purchased this dvd player over one year ago i was just looking for a cheap player for my basement so I got this ($120 CDN) at time of purchase (tax incl.) It was the best decision I could have made, as I got involved with VCD's and SVCD's this player has become my primary. Now that I own a dvd writer it has become more invaluable playing dvd-r aand dvd+r!!!

I can't get MPEG1/2 ISO feature to work with DVD.
It works on CD-Rs so.
I have tried DVD-R, DVD-RW,DWD+R,DVD+RW but it gives me "Disc error"
I burned my DVDs with Nero 6, using both DVD-ROM ISO and DVD-ROM UDF. Nothing seems to work.
Can anybody read MPEG1/2 ISO on DVDs on this player or it is only supported on CD-Rs?

I have had this unit for almost 2 years now.
Works great.
Blue lights look cool at first but get annoying at night. (too damn bright)
Difficulty finding compatable universal remotes.

I tried "Funpig"s remote hack and it works fine
that is on "no disc". Setup, Stop, |<<, >>|
I can change region (1-8 or bypass), CSS (auto/off), dither (auto/off), Macrovision (auto/off), Automute (auto/off)

lol - now if only I knew what any of these options did. :)

I bought mine at Cosco for $150 Canadian.
My brother has aquired a newer version at Zeller's for $120, but the new version does not have as many buttons on the front and is more remote dependant.

When it's working it's okay. The problem is that I find it quite unstable. It will occasionally freeze on perfectly good DVDs and I had one DVD it refused to play. (Maddenly part of a set.) That DVD played on other machines. Sometimes have to turn off and restart to make it work. Randomly applies subtitles which have to be removed. Sometimes starts in wrong language and it's an annoyance to reset. Sent it in for warranty repair because it was ditzy and it came back with comment nothing wrong. Definitely does not play MP3 and was informed of that at time of warranty "repair." Not impressed, but will have to live with it.

I had problems reading Ritek DVD-R's burned on Sony DRU-500A. It would lock up 2 or 3 chapters before movie end. DVD's play fine on other brand DVD players.

I went out and bought a Phillips DVD-724. All movies play fine. I opened both DVD players and notices that the DVD mechanism itself is the same. I swapped them and now my Electrohome plays everything I put in it without locking up. Returned the Phillips. I think it was defective anyways because the remote didn't work anyways.

Excellent full-featured player for the price (now down to $120 Cdn at many stores - sold as a Citizen model) But:
1) Reliability issues? - I'm on my 3rd one from Costco
2) friggin'blue lights!
3) (most important for me) poor MP3 playback - the box I have now garbles the right channel on -some- mp3s. One of the returned units had the same problem but I thought I had some bad files. Turns out the files were ok, player is bad. Don't know how common this is.

Anyways, got a Norcent unit at London Drugs for $100 Cdn, returned 8181a to Costco for $140 :)

Played every single thing i fed into it. Quality is good, sound is good. Built in Dolby/DTS. Got it for $119 at Costco. Really good deal. The only thing that pisses me off about it is the Blue LEDs... they dont turn off when you turn the power off through the remote. I opened the case though and it is easy enough to saulder off.

For what its designed to do it does it well. The only thing that I have a problem with is the fact that the picture quality is questionable or should I say POOR. The picture is alot darker than other DVD players I've tested. Also the picture is somewhat blurry and not as sharp as other DVD players. DVD, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD and MP3's work flawlesly. The poor picture quality is likely amplified by the fact that I'm using a projector and projecting the image to a 100" screen. It looks alot better on my 32" TV.

Has played anything I've put in it, VCD, SVCD, MP3s, Mpegs on disc, karaokee discs, CDRs at 12x, CDRWs at 4x. Great player overall, much better than i expected.

Also got the A revision I believe.

Gave it a 9 b/c it came w/ no batteries for the remote :\\

I have the A revision BTW

This thing works great. Picked it up for ~$150 CDN at Costco a while back.

Negatives
----------
Have to say I really hate the blue lights, but thats nothing a little black electrical tape won't fix (BTW I saw a possibly newer vesion of this with _NO_ blue lights (was sold out before I could pick up another one :P). I cannot skip to a crtain point in an (S)VCD by typing in the time (but thats what chaperter in an SVCD are for right?). It seems to not like the standard form of SVCD mpeg stills cause ones I get off newsgroups look all distorted (mine looked like this until I used the hacked SVCD mpeg stills option). Also, english subs were on by default, so I had to turn them off before they worked normally and the menu to do this was a little hard to get at.

Positives
---------
Plays VCD/SVCD Great, used all types of CDR media - Maxell, very cheap Memorex, Verbatims data Life Plus, TDK 16x, 24x & 32x, Fujifilm, and some unbranded CDR's that turned out to be Imations. I have burned the movies with CDRWin and Nero, from newsgroups, ftp, and my own rips authored with Nero or VCDEasey and they all work great :). Never skips/pauses with any dvd's (even the matrix) and none of my (S)VCD's go blocky (unless there is shitty encoding :P). Fast forwarding definately works on (S)VCD and even multitrack (I ripped some anime 2 eps to a cd) It also allows selectable OGT subtitiles and it handles multiple audio channels with ease. It has basically every type of output you could want - Standard RCA, S-Video, coaxial, RGB and optical audio output.

It works magnificiently, except for very few problems..

1- I was completely unable to play SVCD subs on mine. I got a few subbed SVCDs, and none of them played the subs correctly, so you're stuck with hard-coded subs.

2- A few DVDs stutter and 'freeze' in my EH8181A which were tested in other players with no freeze.

Too bad the A model can't remove Macrovision, but other than that it's just wonderful. I will try making my own SVCDs with subs to see if they work(and hopefully they will!).

I also was able to fast-forward through *all* of my SVCDs, so I have no idea why the rest of the folk say they can't. For some reason, some SVCDs can fast-forward at speeds of 1x, 2x, 3x and 4x while a few others I've tested can fast-forward at 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x. I have no idea what the differences are..

Also the one last thing that annoys me is the fact that the function to go to a specific time in a movie doesn't work with SVCDs when it doesn't know the length of the track. Sometimes I burn SVCDs and it can get the track length, and some times it just can't. It's *very* strange.

I recently bought this DVD player at Costco for $149.99. The player is easy to use and looks great. Plays everything including MPEG!! I recently borrowed 'The Matrix' from my friend to try out DVDs. It seems to freeze and pause up every few minutes and it gets really annoying. It seems to have trouble reading from the disc and makes a 'whirring' sound inside. Does anyone else know of this or knows how I can fix this problem?

Great player, great price, few problems with it tho:

1- Mp3 cds:
At the end of a folder full of mp3s it will stop and not go into the next folder. Kinda annoying but meh.

Only displays first 8? characters of the name so you can't always tell what the song name is if the filename starts with the artist etc.

2- SVCDS:
This ones annoyed me quite a bit, it happens on 2 of these players i have access to. It seems burning past 4x on cdr and on Sony brand cdrs (maybe others) the svcd gets all blocky and sound cuts out here and there. After wasting a few cds I figured it was speed, and 4x seems to work perfect except in one case with Sony CDRs. The cds burn at say 12x play fine in a computer just not in this dvd player.

3- VCDS:
This problem im told is because it is a burnt vcd, and with real bought vcds it would be fine, which is probably true since the player seems to have a tad bit of trouble reading cdrs (mentioned above). What happens is the audio and video d-sync by about 1/4 second.

The Mp3 problem is no biggy, but the SVCD prob bugs me. I wonder if its my burner, i dont know.
BTW cdrs that have worked include but may not be limited to:
Maxell 74min and 80min
Gigagstore 80min cert 16x
Mitsui unbranded 74min (found it in my desk, who knows)
Cursor 80mins (24x cert i think)
Fuji Film 80mins

So it seems that media usually works fine, and the sonys were just an exception. So I put it down to burning speed. It also may be my burner, its an LG DVD(read) combo drive.

Any info on the svcd problem is really appreciated, email me.
Oh and this is the -A model. Wish macrovision was still disablable
