This player would be great if it would only play DVD-RW discs! It only seems to work with DVD-R disks which is a waste of a disk for temporary stuff :-( Anyone else have the same experience?

I've been asked about stuttering Xvid playback a few times, so I hope the following helps:

Comments: Bought this player yesterday in WHSmith, and I am well impressed. Specifically wanted it for it's divx/xvid playback function, which it does well.

One minor niggle was upon playback of TV Eps, I noticed a slight jerkiness in playback. To get around this I downloaded this little program:

http://www.moitah.net/download/latest/MPEG4Modifier.zip

It allows you to unpack the bitrate of the divx, which allows the chipset on the player to better perform, therfore eliminating the jerkiness, and blocking.

All you do is this:

When you open the file, under packed bitstream, check the unpack box.

Then in the user data box, edit the line that is something like DivX999b000p , and change the p to an n.

Then save the file, and delete the original. When you playback on the Skyworth you will now notice smooth perfect playback!

To clarify that, download your file, then use the utility, then burn the new file.

I have two problems with this player, the first minor one is that when the disc is spinning their is a quiet clicking noise coming from it, and since my home cinema set-up has the player sat right next to my seat, it's annoying unless I have the sound up loud.

Secondly, and what really bugs me, is the usual fault of all these budget players, no widescreen switching! I have a 16:9 TV and if I set the DVD to 16:9, everything is widescreen, even original 4:3 discs get stretched out. So back to Asda it goes tomorrow, and my search continues.

I have had this player now for a few months and was very pleased with it.It played everything i threw at it including karaoke (cd+g) disks!! I bought this player mainly for playing divx/xvid which worked great untill the other day. When i loaded a disk the unit failed to spin up on all disks so i returned it back to Asda who happliy exchanged it for another but this new player keeps locking up, the picture freezes after about 25mins and i have to unplug and try again and this happend on a brand new original single layer dvd.So its another trip to asda for another excange as when it does work i cant fault the picture or sound quality

This player is great!! Bought in Asda for £42 when I was searching for a Divx DVD player. This has played every file I've tried so far from mpeg through to avi and mp3 files. I've burnt DVD-R disks with several films and music videos on. Just select the file and it plays. Picture quality is great and there's no need to spend hours authoring disks. And without the authoring the picture improves greatly with far fewer artifacts.

Buying this is a no brainer, get one before they run out!

What can I say, this player is amazing for the price. I bought it to use at my parents in law so I went for a really cheap and nasty, but this will play discs that my Pioneer DV575 won't!

OK, so the picture quality isn't amazing on DivX's, but then when is it? I'm really impressed by the feature set and ease of setup. Well recommended.

i bought mine is my local asda store, was looking for a cheap divx/xvid player and found it by accident. anyway, it looks good, nice coloured led's and slim design. plays most of what i wanted although i dont think it played wmv which would have been a bonus. but xvid playback and divx was great quality and worth the price for that alone. i would hope that one day a download will be availible to upgrade it to support subtitles as i enjoy foreign films.
i too found nothing on the net about this player, not even a manufacturers website lol but it is a good player.
bad points are the slow tray eject, no sub support and massive remote control with tiny buttons. 8/10 from me.

would b nice if we could find a firmware update somewhere,to cure the prob of reading different disks.

After much messing about I eventually got the system to open! It took me about 10 mins of pressing the Open/Close button on the system and on the Remote, but eventually I got it to open, it now ejects quite slowly but it hasn't posed any other problem since.

I immediately tried a SVCD conversion to DVD-R that i'd burnt, worked fine, DivX on CDR, worked fine, DivX on DVD-R worked fine.

I have burnt some episodes (6) of CSI Season 5 to DVD-R and am now having problems, the folder menu is displayed on screen albeit after a time, then when you pick an episode it just spins constantly, like it's searching, the timer comes up all zeros and then it carries on searching again without showing anything. I know that there has been a new Xvid codec recently and am wondering if that is the cause, but with no firmware upgrades on the horizon how will I find out? There is no web address in the manual. There is however an ASDA helpline number that I may ring tommorow.

Overall, it's a good buy for £50.

RE: Multi-region hack for Dual dvd859?
Submitted by thedude on 29/11/2004 21:09:11
This is the same as the Dual dvd858 hack,(a.k.a. Schneider 858?) I used this on my Dual dvd859 last night & selected region zero (see last step)& have tested on region 1 & 2 discs, worked fine - no problem. You will not see any indication that it has worked on the screen until you put the disc in. I have also read that if this doesn’t work for your machine, you should put a disc of a different region into the tray (eg region 1 if your player came as region 2) after step 1.

1. Press the Open/Close button on your remote control
2. Press the Clear button on your remote control
3. Press the 1 button on your remote control
4. Press the 3 button on your remote control
5. Press the 6 button on your remote control
6. Press the 9 button on your remote control
7. Press the 1 button on your remote control for region 1, 2 for region 2, and so on, or 0 for multi-region playback
8. Press the Open/Close button on your remote control

Comments:
I too bought this for GB£50 from ASDA (Dec'04), for its MPEG4 (DivX/Xvid etc..) support, and have not been disappointed.

Playing avi files straight from CD-R's, this thing is brilliant.

I think the quality is significantly better than my avi conversions to MPEG-1 or 2 discs (VCD/SVCD/CVD etc..) Even although I was using DVD2SVCD with CCE on multi-pass encoding, I will bot be bothering to convert in future. The picture is much brighter and (probably just because it has not been re-encoded) artifacts etc.. are much less in evidence.

Although it's not a major thing, I was pleasantly surprised that is also plays avi's with WMV codecs etc.. In fact, I have yet to find an avi that it cannot play (e.g. WMV8, DivX 3,4 & 5, and Xvid are all supported). (Not actual ASF or WMV files it seem though).

The same goes for support of audio formats used with avi files - it can handle mp3, DivX3 audio, and AC3 and perhaps others? The manual seems to suggest it supports WMA audio.., but I've not really tested that.

As far as I can tell, it does not support external subtitles for avi's - I don't know much about these, but I tried putting a susbtitle file with the same name as an avi on the same disc in .srt, .ssa and .sub format - and the player seemed to ignore all of them. Perhaps it's possible, but I don't know how.

The player seems to handle mulitple audio tracks on SVCD, but not PBC (i.e. no menus) and not selectable SVCD subtitles. VCD menus (and DVD obviously) are fine.

This is pretty much the same CVD/SVCD support as the player it has replaced - a Pacific 1002 from ASDA too. In fact, a lot of the interface is very similar. The file navigation is a slight improvement on how basic its predecessor was - it looks nicer, and when it is used to play mp3 files, this one shows some information such as time elapsed and has a little 'EQ' type display (better than nothing?!)

Overall, this player is phenomenally good value for money - it would be worth it for the MPEG4 support alone, but it also seems to be a fairly well-featured VCD/CVD/DVD player (e.g. the 5.1 outputs)

I cannot comment on DVD-R/+R etc.. as I don't yet have a DVD burner.

As the previous reviewer said, it would be good to find a support website for this, with a view to updating the firmware in the future etc.. I'll maybe contact ASDA and post any info they give me back here.

Hope that's some helpful info for people researching the player.

There is absolutely no info to be found about this player anywhere on the net, hence my long boring post :-)

A nice looking, slimline player, although it has quite a big footprint. On the plus side, it has blue LED's.
I have been waiting to buy a Divx player for ages, but was waiting for the price to drop.
I got sick of converting avi's to Mpeg and authoring etc, so when I saw this for £50, I snapped it up from Asda.
I'm not too technical with the Bitrate side and most of the info comes from the instruction manual.
My only actual experience is with Bulkpaq 4X dvd-r.
Divx (4 & 5) and Xvids were burned as data files using Nero 6 and played no problem, with what seemed like reasonable quality. For the tecchies, Divx upto 10000 Kbps and resolution of 720x480 @ 30fps or 720x576 @ 25fps is supported.
Mpeg4 is supported upto 8000Kbps.
Connectivity is pretty good, having full 5.1 output, composite video,S-video,Optical audio, Co-axial audio and Scart.
As I said, Info is impossible to find and I am concerned that it might not be supported with F/W upgrades.
If anyone needs (fairly basic) info, mail me at tcbg25185@blueyonder.co.uk and I'll try to help.
Likewise, any hacks would be greatly appreciated.
PS There is also a cheaper DVD player at ASDA, the Dual 858, but no info on that either.
