| Truly dreadful player how this was ever released i dont know.Sure it will play all formats but it plays them badly.DIVX disks work but you get huge lip-sync problems.Backed up dvdr play ok for about 1hr then you get picture break up and this was on ritek media.Retail dvds dont escape either as i was getting lip-sync problems on some disks too.On 1 dvd i couldnt switch off the subtitles as it couldnt navigate the dvd menu.At the very least you expect a dvd player to play retail dvds but this doesnt avoid at all costs ! |

Player does support packed bitstream and QPEL.
Does not at all support GMC. Not even with one warp point.
Supports AC3 6 channel in Divx/Xvid file.
The biggest problem:
The srt, etc subtitles in Divx/Xvid mode are very small and in light yellow. Also they are a quarter up from the bottom of the screen which is all very very very bad.
In DVD mode the subtitles are perfect. In white with black outline and the size of normal subtitles you see on TV or in the movies. As a dvd player it is good but as a Divx/Xvid player it is very very very bad. Also there is no official or unofficial firmware upgrade available for this player which corrects this problem.
Also the file browser only displays 8 characters for directorynames and filenames. The window is a split screen one side for the directories and the other side for the filenames. Even if you have no directories it splits the screen in two thereby throwing away half the screen. It also does not show the extension. So it is back to the DOS age for this player. Also I had two Divx films named filmname CD1.avi and filmname CD2.avi and guess what the first file it listed was filmname CD2.avi not filmname CD1 so the sorting of the filenames is also weird.
Also sometimes on the same video file it does not play the srt subtitles. When you try it later it all of a sudden does work. Could not find a clear reason why it does that. Also on some srt files it displays normal subtitles in unreadable characters, garbage, whereas on my computer with bsplayer it is just plain english.
It does not support original DVD subtitles .sub + .idx. It does support MicroDVD .sub, SubStation Alpha .ssa and SAMI .smi.
On some video files I also saw a sound problem in that if somebody says something there are several millisecond of delay with when you hear it. It's like watching a german movie which was originally english.
As a divx player it is very very bad. Do not buy it if you just want to watch your Divx/Xvid files sitting on the couch in the livingroom because the subtitles are just unreadable from that distance.
To remedy my problems I bought the LG dv 9900. Without doing a firmware upgrade it does have similair font in Divx mode that you have in DVD mode. If you still think that the fonts in Divx mode are not big enough then you can always try the unoffical firmware upgrade of fallenangel but you will lose warenty. Also the filebrowser displays about 52 characters when there are only Divx files on your DVD and 22 characters if there are jpg or mp3 files on the DVD. It only has video playback problems with GMC video files with more then one warp point. But that's a small problem compared to
all the problem that the Denver 808 had. The only big problem of the LG DV 9900 is that in the Netherlands it is hard to come by. LG Netherlands took the model out of production because they can do things even beter now. So I could only get one from a shop that still had some LG dv 9900 in stock. I also got an english model not dutch. But I am a very hapy LG user. |
