New Firmware (DenverDVD438 1252 v3 Mtz) - 16-06-2006

What's new:
1. Big subtitles, white, outlined with black.
2. New fonts for menu and subtitles.
3. Solved the bug when not displayed the first character in .sub subtitles.
4. Unlimited number of characters for subtitles displayed in max. 2 or 3 lines.
5. Up to 46 characters for filenames in file browser and you can see the extensions.
6. New icons (laza), backgrounds; english OSD "re-translated" in 188 version.
7. Added support for the following Language Code Pages: 1250, 1251, 1252, 1253, 1254, 1255, 1257.
8. Denver 438 v3: You can play any subtitle from CD/DVD/Folder

Subtitles characteristics in the firmware:
The subtitle font can display up to 52 characters/line because the area for displaying subtitles is extended and the size is very similar to movie subtitles of TV Stations. The subtitles are in lowered positions and displayed from bottom to top.
You can see the subtitles files (.sub and .srt) in file browser. This is good for checking if the subtitle have the same name as the movie. You cannot select and play the subtitles because is not supported.

To read Xvid you must recoded the Xvid.
I play without problems this way:
Program:
- VirtualDubMod
Options:
- Video -> Fast recompress
- Compession -> Xvid MPEG-4 Codec

Configuration of Xvid:
- Load Defaults
- Bitrate -> 900 kbs
- 1 Pass CBR
- Advanced Options
- Global
- Disable all check box in this tab except DV50 B-VOP compatibility

Then in VirtualDub Mod, just select File -> Save as ... and wait for the recode.
I Have a AMD XP 1800+ and take 1 hour to finish the job.
But sometimes some avi take longuer.

Attention: there's a new firmware update (V.04.03) on Denver's official site.
Corrections made with this update

1. Subtitle with shadows so it is easier to see on white background
2. Improved DivX subtitles so cut off doesn't appear as often as with firmware 2.06
3. Subtitles no longer dissapears when fast forwarding.

I've made the upgrade and it worths!!!

I´m having problems reading some dvds. Some dvds9 with a movie with more than 1 hour and 45 minutes freezes in the midle and don´t play again. I have do turn off the player and after a few tries it works again. Some dvds like Hulk, Gladiator and Braveheart are doing me that! Don't know why! I've got the last firmware(24 Augost) and nothing. It always did this! Could be a problem with dust and needed to clean the dvd with a dvd cleaner or something else? Everything else plays fine!

- Good player and good dvx support, but

- avi poor subtitle support (truncated, missing
characters, etc.)

It appear that the subtitles are limited to 34
characters per line and 60 characteres overall, but
if the first line have 50 characters and the second
line 20 characters there will be displayed only the
first 34 and 10 characteres from line 1 and 2
respectively.

The ù character does'nt exist.

It needs another firmware upgrade

Excellent for the price ...

Subtitles (.srt) must have the exact same name as .avi file. (Sugestion: less than 13 chars so you can see the all the name on the screen )

managed to put several .avi files and related .srt files in a single DVD and it WORKS ;)

.avi identified as "Div3 Low Motion" by gspot program don't work well
div3 Fast motion, divx4 divx5 xvid work
(but probably not every version of codec)

Oh yes. Now I got it to work. Another thing that still don't work is foramting the subtitles, f.i. "<i> test </i>" the word is not shown in italic-format.
This, and the three things in previous post is not good, but the subtitle-function can be still used. Hoping for a fix for these 4 items :-)

If you upgraded with the file MTS1389.BIN then you already have the 2.06 version. You can confirm that by pressing "setup" and the numbers 1379 on your remote control.

The only format supported, until now, is .srt.
My experience is that the name of the .srt shall be the same as the .avi.

The subtitles are not perfect yet, they are:
1) Align to the right,
2) Don't have shadow (unreadable in white background images)
3) Sometimes are cutted (don't know if there is a maximum number of characters for each subtitle)

I have updated my 438 with the official http://www.denver-electronics.com/dvd438update.htm
but still I can't see the subtitle in Divx.
I don't know what format the subs has to bee, .sub, srt, .ssa or some other format? And how shall I name the subs? Same name as the .avi?

Somebody wrote about a firmware-upgrate taht did the trix, the 2.06 version. How do I flash it, and where do I find this firmware? Or do I not need it, when I have put the MTS1389.BIN in the player?

I just upgraded the firmware and now I can read the subtitles from my DivX/XviD movies.
I've a good impression, but, so far, I encountered 2 problems in reading DivX movies:
1st - Subtitles are cutted, it seems that there is a maximum number of charaters per line.
2nd - In one of my movies, there was a problem with the audio. It seems that some sounds couldn't be played (I didn't check what audio codec was used).

The final conclusion is:
Very good Quality/Price relation.
