CVD? $? 1 days 9 of 10 DVD-RAM Comments: I just got this player today after bidding on it and winning. The sound and picture is amazing. The features I wish it had can be forgiven due to the outstanding performance. I do have a problem however, I have hooked up a Pioneer PDR-509 cd recorder to it and it will not record optical or coaxial. The display says 'Cannot Copy'. It will record via the analog inputs. I have not had this issue with any other dvd player I have used with the Pioneer PDR-509. All the settings on the Denon are correct to pass a digital signal. Don't understand why it won't do what I want it to do. If any one has a solution, please let me know. I have tried several formats with the 2800mk2: dvd audio does play but only 2Ch. It will also play Dualdiscs but again only in 2Ch. It will not play 48k dvd audio. It plays dvd-r's perfectly. Dvd+r is hit and miss, some will play/some not. HDCD sounds very good. Dvd's sound very good with plenty of impact and bass slam. The Denon does handle the bass very well, if you are a bass freak this player will amaze you. The sound overall is very 3d-like with a huge soundstage. Picture wise, it is hard to fault the Denon. Via component outputs the picture is clean and crisp and again very 3d with a lot of definition. So far, I am very impressed.

Freezes up for some time and then ssometimes just freezes. Have had the player for two years and I'm positively surprised. It was a dream to upgrade firmware. I just burned the file to a cd and put it in the player. Did some buttonpushing and wham it was done. I upgraded to a firmware that was region free and it works as a charm.I will purchase a new Denon-DVD as soon as they support SACD's in a new model.

N/A No rating Comments: Well gave it another try with DVD+R media it it works!! I used a memorex burner and Verbatim media and used DVDXCopy v1.3 and it is fine. Again shame we do not have dual layer media to fit all of the data on one DVD. Come-on dual layer media!!!

This is usefull for other players as well.

CVD? $550 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Well it played everything I've thrown at it till now, a DVD+RW Memorex Disc burned using a Memorex DVD+R+RW burner, their only current model. Heck I am looking for a model number on the box and can't find one. Anyhow I am disapointed that it does not play with the + media, that by most accounts I've read, is supposed to be the most recognized format that will play in most consumer DVD players. What a hunk of crap. Oh I burned the DVD using DVDXCopy Software. Well until that get us some media that is dual layer and will hold enough data to copy a movie, I'll stick to SVCD. I am taking this Burner right back to the store for a full refund. As far as Denon is concerned, very disapointed with their customer service and even though I reated this product a 8 I am very disappointed that it will not play everything you throw at it and for $500, man I should of bought a 50 dollar player and it would of played it all!! Please tell me how can that be????

N/A No rating Comments: A final note about this player and others for that matter, if the maufacturer(s) have not used a laser pickup that is designed for dvd-r or other types of media it is just luck as to how well the unit performs. this means that a particular model can vary between totaly useless to working with every thing you put in to it. The manufacturers of the optical pickup will most likly second source components which will give even more scope for variation in performance. A freind who has access to many models checked out several of the same models and the above is the conclusion we have come to. But to be fair the majority of the same model seem to work ok. There is a similar story about the xbox and dvd/games etc, with a change in the dvd reader from one make to another comes a preference to different disks ! Back to the 2800 that i have, It did not perform 100% on dvd-r it would freeze and jump every few seconds or so until that is i tried a generation 4 disk, With these it plays 100% with no problems at all. (dvd-master gen 4 printed on the disk and are rated 2x), Also i burn 1x,udf1.02 with everything else unticked (VOB). 2800 does not require udf setting but the x-box does ! You can buy these at your local computer shows at less than a pound each. I had tried almost every other disk with no success at all. Also tried these on other players that were not 100% and they too were perfect.

CVD? $650 N/A 9 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: It definitely plays Verbatim and Vesastar DVD-R (burned on a Pioneer A03 Writer) It played all tested SVCDs, but it has one bug: You cannot forward or rewind. If you do, it jumps back to the start. Pause works fine. No problems at all with VCDs. Used all kind of CDRs so far. Never had a problem. Superb video and audio quality. Progressive Scan is build in for NTSC, but can easily upgraded to PAL as well. MP3 is supported. Even with long filenames, but the folder names are limited to 11 Chars. Apart from that, no problems so far. Remote is quite ok. Nothing special, but ok. The same is true for the OCD. I really love this player.

N/A 8 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I Have one with firmware 5250 and Denon sad that this is the current one. miniDVD is supported - but the datastream is to high for a cd! Viewing a DVD on a CD is more like a slow motion. I tested some burned DVD's (Verbatim) and he plays them. Against the note from Paul Drag! The DVD's are burned with Pioneers A03. SVCD seems to be a bit problematic. The player plays them but sometimes you have a jitter effect of the picture. I also tested some XVCD's and XSVCD and he playes them also. The only problem is that the bitrate should not too high (less than 3000).

CVD? $600 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Has latest firmware from Denon (2250?). Tested with HP brand DVD+R/RW media - DVD+R works well, DVD+RW was not recognized by player. VCD/SVCD only tested on CD-R (not RW). Worked OK. Did have optical pickup assy failure after 9 months (replayced unit under warranty). I'm much happier now knowing that this player works with DVD+R!

CVD? $600 N/A 8 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: I have had time to research this and contact DENON, they say it is not supposed to play dvd-r so complaining will get you nowhere. I have a pioneer A03 DVD writer and have used unbranded and branded dvd-r discs and they play the same,ok for a while then it freezes and jumps but on my old pioneer 515 it plays perfect for the 24 min clip. Both myself and a friend have made discs and we have the same problem but we tried a third 2800 and it played ok. It seems to be more luck than by design they work. The maufacturers are missing out if they do not ensure that there products play all or most discs, i would say take a test disc to the shop try it and purchase the unit you have just tried it on. My friends bought a cheap cyberhome for their son and guess what it plays every cdr/dvd-r i burn, fun isn't it.

CVD? $600 N/A 8 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: Just purchased this player for projector use, but i am disapointed with mini dvd playback no menu support and its jerky and worse on cdr/w than cdr plus no audio. Svcd works ok but can have problems on cdr/w sometimes. Audio/mp3 on cdr-cdr/w no problems. I have used ulead dvd movie factory for burning mini dvd, i have also tried it on LQ setting with most brands, still no good ! For home cinema i give this 10 out of 10 a stunning picture on 6 ft screen but 8 out of 10 for general use.

I have no idea what's wrong with the guy who made the first post, I assume he hasn't a clue about what he's doing. This player is incredible, although the remote control blows. But clear pictures, reverse/forward frame searching works perfectly, zoons all work fine, and it's nice and crispy.
