| I give this DVD player a 6 because I had it for about a year and a half, and it is now not playing all DVDs (all region mixed), and it is getting really annoying. Although it still works for CDs (and some DVDs), I have to get rid of it... |

Plays my SVCDs on CD-R fine. Also, plays at least one kind of Maxell DVD+R 8x, but this player would not play one kind of Maxell DVD-R 8x.
Occasionally, the tray gets stuck. Instead of pushing the tray closed, I recommend using the button. (It's hard habit for me to break.)
All in all, this DVD player was a good deal when I bought it December 2004. |

This player is a real deal. I can't understand the nitpicking about how far the drawer opens or whether it decodes HDCD, when it is only $40 and does so much so well. Do you really think you are going to hear a benefit from HDCD with a $40 player, and more importantly, your other hardware you are connecting it to? No, you won't. So lighten up.
The PAL/NTSC conversion looks quite good. No partial lines at the top or bottom and no flickering of the top and bottom border. The region hack posted earlier works perfectly. One of the biggest pluses for me is the mp3 navigation. So many players prectically require having a monitor on to davigate the disc, but not with this one, so long as you don't use folders. Simply enter the track number on the remote and hit play. FF and FR also work.
All this, plus both coaxial and optical outputs and I have to say it is a good bet for a very cheap universal player. As is common with players this cheap, I expect the initial defect rate is probably high, so run it through the paces right away. Hopefully it doesn't just die in 6 months. |

This is my last entry since I have returned the player.
I felt I gave the player a fair shake but it had far too many quirks to justify my keeping it. The quirks:
No HDCD playback. An e-mail to Daewoo went unanswered.
Automatic play is permanently enabled. Bad idea.
Tray does not open all the way.
Video dac is lower bit resolution for a modern player.
Observed motor spindle rumbling on some discs.
1 rental disc would not play, it just kept spinning.
No video enhancements.
Zoom featured ruined by onscreen display of setting.
Onscreen menu very bright/contrasty.
It did however, have some bright spots:
Fast transport.
Good MP3 playback.
Plays DVD-RW.
Reasonably good cd playback.
Good audio fidelity on pressed cd's/cdr's/cdrw's.
Good remote control design.
I did have a peek under the hood and it appeared to be well laid-out competent design. I had hoped that maybe another player would play a HDCD correctly and light up that logo in the display, but a quick check of another player in the store proved to be futile. Daewoo needs to take a hard look at this and their next player and solve the problems I've mentioned.
I hooked my Panasonic ra-60 back up and will stick with it until I can find a dvd player with the features I want to replace it. The bottom line is I can't recommend the Daewoo after my experience with it. |

This unit will play dvdrw just fine: tested disc: Fuji.
HDCD problem is still an issue with no reply from Daewoo yet. I did some listening with headphones and pressed cd's sound very good, a tad bass-heavy to my ears however. Nonetheless, well-recorded cds will shine on this player. Another quirk: most players will let you load a disc and before closing the tray, you can choose the track # and press play and that selected track will play. The Daewoo will not do this. Automatic play is enabled for some reason which is strange. The transport is very fast, faster than my Panasonic which has a little lag time between tracks. I have watched several dvd rentals with no problems. The picture is a bit dark but this can be solved with the tv's brightness control. The players menu is easy to use but looks very contrasty on my tv. The zoom issue is still present with the zoom display on the screen. I was hoping to use the zoom feature to watch those letterboxed movies full-frame, but that on-screen setting just won't go away. The tray doesn't open all the way and inserting/removing discs is harder than usual. I am using component video cables and the picture looks quite good, less so via the svhs connection. Testing continues... |

UPDATE: Some specs from the Daewoo site: 24bit/96khz,
27mhz/10 bit. I watched the new restored version of 'The Shining', it looked quite good on this player albeit with still some grain in the image. When playing a dvd if you press the 'search' button on the remote, lo and behold: a bitrate meter! I'm not sure what the appeal of this would be but it's nice to have discovered it. It is not mentioned in the manual. Played an MP3 disc at 192kb and it sounded fine. Will try higher rates. My other player(Panasonic Dvd-RA60)has a 54Mhz/10 bit video Dac and clearly has the edge on picture quality over the Daewoo but it doesn't play MP3's well at all. And the Daewoo has tricks the Panny doesn't. About the 7 3D modes: They are: Concert, Living Room, Hall, Bathroom(No kidding!), Cave, Arena and Church. They sound a bit gimmicky with various forms of reverb/delay. Not sure when these modes would come in handy but they are there. I also discovered you can make setup changes while the dvd is playing. The tray is very thin and makes inserting and removing a disc somewhat difficult, it's best to grab the disc by the center hole to remove. The display on the unit is very small, and no dimmer or off option. The resume function is nice. The testing continues... |

| I am still in the testing phase and will update when completed. So far, HDCD discs will not light up the logo in the display, very disappointing since this was one reason for purchase. On some discs/dvds a motor noise is heard when spinning up and during playback. On other discs, it's very quiet(no noise). An oddity for sure. Since this is a budget model there are no tweaks such as dialog enhancement/color/tint/sharpness/contrast. There are 3d enhancements however(7 in all)for cd/dvd/etc. The zoom works fine but leaves the setting displayed on the screen with no way to turn it off. Another oddity. On the rear panel is a optical/coaxial output, 2 ch audio out, composite and component. There is a dynamic range control which is nice as well as a volume control. SPDIF options are: Off/Raw/PCM. There is a screen saver. Display otions are: Normal Pan and scan/Normal Letterbox and 16x9 Wide. This is not a stripped down player by any means and has many other features I haven't listed. Pressed cds sound fine, a bit flat sounding for my tastes. Nothing written in the manual about what type of processor is used. The remote is nice with many buttons, I judged it easy to use and read(No backlighting). The manual is a little spartan and could be improved by talking more about HDCD. No SACD or DVD Audio playback, just the graphics for DVD-Audio and normal 2ch playback. This player does a lot for the money. Time will tell whether or not I keep it. I will update later after more testing. |

| Another fine Daewoo product, but fails to detect HDCD encoding. The "HDCD" light doesn't come on on the display. I don't know if maybe HDCD encoding really is working but fails to light it, I can't tell the difference if so. Otherwise a fine product, and an excellent value for money. Easy to make region free also (like all Daewoo's I've had experience with) with very high quality PAL/NTSC conversion - you can't really tell it's coverted content (in fact - my TV supports 50Hz (not PAL color though but I use the component inputs) and I prefer watching the 60Hz conversion in some ways since it eliminates the flicker) |

I picked the Daewoo DVG-9200N up from Target for $40 - amazing price.
But when I tried playing a DVD - it would stutter briefly during playback - it did this so often that it made the movie un-watchable. I tried another DVD - same problem. So I took it back and got another.
The second one did NOT have the problem - So... if you do buy this model make sure that you keep your reciept handy, and test several DVDs.
I decided on this model since the Daewoo web site (PDF file) showed that it plays almost everything DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, VCD, SVCD
Jpeg files, CD-R CD-RW, and of course CD-audio.
I grabbed as many discs that I could find and it played them.
Here's what I tried (it may exceed these tests):
- CD-R & CD-RW with MP3 files 64,128,160,256 & 320kb (shows graphic EQ)
- CD-R with MPEG1 and MPEG2 files
- DVD+RW with MPEG2 files (from my Replay TV - non standard format)
- CD-R with lots JPEG images
These all played fine - file and directory selection
is on-screen with 14 character names (the rest get chopped off)
The current directory name can be up to 29 characters - oddly
enough, longer names lose the beginning characters.
- DVD pre-recorded movie
- DVD+RW ripped movie
- DVD+R with a home video
- VCD on a CD-R & CD-RW
- SVCD on a CD-R
- CD audio - pre-recorded disc
- Mini-DVD (DVD video on a CD-R)
I have 3 mini DVDs - two played ok, but the third - was a bit
stuttery - I'm not sure if that is the fault of the player or
the encoding. It plays ok on my PC though.
------Media: Discs tested ok----
DVD+R Memorex and Teon
DVD+RW Memorex, Ricoh
CD-R Memorex, Hi-Val, Imation and several No-name cheapie discs
CD-RW No-name
All discs played ok.
----------------------
Other notes: This DVD is replacing my older Daewoo DVG-3000N that was starting to have problems skipping on pre-recorded DVD and pre-recorded CDs. (Strange... it didn't have problems on my burned discs) I paid $100
and thought it was the lowest price possible. But now $40 buys even more.
The remote on this player works much better than the remote on the 3000N and it still has that peculiar 'pitch adjust' feature allowing you to shift the pitch of the audio - without changing the speed of the playback. I guess it's for the karaoke lovers.
It also adds progressive playback - for when I eventually get that HDTV set.
Here's a link to Daewoo's web site - the PDF file shows more details.
http://www.dwe.co.kr/eng/support/filedown.asp?cod ... -9200N.pdf
Note that the User manual is for the 9100 and the 9200 model. The diagram in the manual makes it look as if the 9200 has no front panel display. This is not true - it DOES have a display that shows track number, time etc.
Also claims to do HDCD audio.
