Comments:
I bought this DVD player at Sams club at least 3 years ago becuase it was cheap ($100 at the time), it had lots of features and it was hackable (macrovision, region-free). It worked just fine for a couple of years and then the DVD Drive started dying...then it was dead. So I cracked open the unit and put in a DVD drive I had bought at a garage sale. Hooked up the power and IDE cable and....boohyeah! Works better than ever. I used hot glue to put the little black piece of plastic that says DVD on the from of the disc carrage.

I love this player.A lot of information regarding upgrades etc on the web.
I bought 5 with varying degrees of problems(eBay) cheap, made three good ones, sold one to recover my cost.I then fitted a LG 8160 16x Dvd rom player, with a RPC 1 bios re-flash,set it to Master,a 80 pin ata 100 cable fitted. And upgraded the Dvd player bios with Macrovision and Css disable select and a louder volume output,Now it's brilliant, runs everything i've put on it.

So far I'd give it a full 10!
I've read some responces, but I have mine for 6 months and never felt sorry to buy one.
Majority of usage for the first months was a karaoke function. Works well. Later I started to use it playing burned by myself DVD-Rs. Any (eve the cheapest media) DVD-R was working nicely, more exciting was the fact that it plays any PAL DVDs, I've tried it even playing a PAL movie (on DVD-R) with zone 5, and it worked just fine while my other 2 DVD players (Panasonic 56 and 32) won't even recognize the disks. For DVD-Rs I used SmartRipper, then ReMPEG2 to shrink the movie and IFOEdit to author (Nero to burn).

I've had this for over a year and overall I love the thing. I recently got a DVD burner which has been a trip to find compatible DVD-R. I know the Imation DVD-Rs work but cost $2.12 (the cheapest on the net). I'm counting on the Ritek discs....$0.96 per disc. Princo's do not work.....I only use DVD-Rs.

I've tried all formats...VCD, XVCD, SVCD & XSVCD. I can rip a DVD with SmartRipper, then use DVD2AVI, and finally convert with TMPGEnc. I burn my CD-Rs with Nero. I get 32-35 mins video at 720 x 480 with 3000 bitrate and get no trouble on playback. Can't tell the difference between the original DVD....it just takes a few more discs. I can give you settings if anyone needs them or send you a template.

I've been using DVDxcopy to copy my DVD rentals. I received 12 DVD-Rs with my new computer & DVD burner and they work perfectly. I'm trying to find some cheaper discs that work as well. I found the Imation discs for $2.12 which is pretty good.

The only problem with the player is that will freeze on me from time to time. The only way to fix it is to power down and reboot. Since I upgraded the firmware, I've had no problems at all. I give this player an 8 only because it's been hard to find DVD-Rs and the locking up. If the upgrade solves my freezes, I'll give it a 9.

Joe

this was the perfect player... until it stopped playing DVDs just recently. it's not even 8 months old. i only know of my own unit, so i can't shoo people away without justification, but just be aware of this problem.

other problems:
-it reads maybe 2/3rds of CD-RWs... doesn't make a difference if they're regular CD-RWs, or High Speed CD-RWs (up to 10 speed)... it just sounds like the clamp (or similar device) just plain slips. CD-Rs play perfectly.
-lastly, some SVCD res MPEG2 files and some SVCD discs will have audio skipping (picture will be fine), but as far as i can tell, it's just limited to fucked up aspect ratios like 1:1 (opposed to the usual 4:3)

oh, and the remote is pretty gay ~_~

Comments:
Since the Mpeg1/2 feature was added to the list I decided to update my impression about this DVD player. There is no firmware update needed to have this player play mpeg1/2 files strait from the CD. It comes with this feature from the box. It plays Mpeg1/2 from the CD-R/RW encoded using DVD templates and even able to read Mpeg1/2 files with non standard GOP( I use tmpGenc and my settings in DVD NTSC CQ-VBR and GOP – I-4, P-3, B-0). I am using this feature for making my home made DVD movies. Before burning a DVD video I am copying the encoded for DVD mpeg2 file to the CD-RW and see
if any blocking or skipping occurs.
I am using Ulead DVD movie factory for authoring. Nero 5.5.9.0 and Windows XP CD writing capabilities . So far only media that this player has problems with were CD-RWs High Speed disks and DVD-RWs Princo. Worked perfectly with OPTODISK DVD-R 2x. Works also with RITEK DVD-R 1x
but sometimes I see dropped frames and pixilation every 2-5 minutes of video. Still don’t know if this is a media or burning/authoring problem.
SVCDs Mpeg2 are working ok with no skipping. However, when playing mpeg2 740x480 with 8000 KB/s data bit rate from CD-RW it seems like loader is not able to read file fast enough to keep up with the video rate. So, every 20-30 sec it friezes and continues playing next second.
Over all it was a good player when it came one year ago which was easy to hack and it still shows incredible compatibility with most mpeg video, audio and mp3 audio files. Not giving 10 because it is not compatible with DVD-RW. Also the loader used on this DVD player is rarely used and updated firmware for DVD-RW support can’t be found for it.

Player works well with everything but dvdr and dvd-rw I've tried many brands of media and different authoring apps and yet dvd-r works about 95% of the time. At first I assumed it worked because I rarely watched an entire dvd I made. Still it is easy to remove region coding and macrovision. And it plays anything on cd, even raw mpeg and vob files. And it acts up after being paused on a Regular DVD. Though hitting stop and play resumes the playback normally. E-mail me if you know of media that works with it.

I just bought this player with manufactered date
Oct' 2001. Currently I own a Sampo 620 with 3.5F firmware which supports, XVCD,SVCD,XSVCD and MPEG-1 files(but not dat). I expected same from this too.
but to my surprise, it was able to Play MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and .dat files and comes with menus to select.
Some people complained XSVCD with 9000KB/s is not supported, but it didn't complain, it played.
The only bad thing in this Player is, it encodes MACROVISION for all outputs even source don't have.
The tested the following formats.

MP3- 128kbps,192kbps
VCD-
XVCD-2500kbps
XVCD -variable bit rate-1100--2500kbps
MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 with variable and constant bit rate upto 5000kbps
with sizes 352x240,480x480,720x480 pixels.(Tested, may support more)
SVCD-upto 9000kbps
DVD- PAL/NTSC

I bought this at SAMS club last fall. Yesterday I upgraded the FIRMWARE to disable macrovision and disable region codes. The upgrade went perfectly.

Other than that, some ergonomics issues (button locations and types, and menu formats) this is the perfect machine. It just works with everything that can be put on a CDR.

The biggest complaint is that I had a difficult time finding a UNIVERSAL remote that would work with this. I went to www.remotecentral.com and found one via their FORUM messages. I had to buy this remote from radio shack, and then build an interface cable. Then I uploaded the control codes from my computer. Took me a while to figure this all out, but works fine now.

It has played all of my homemade SVCD's on 80 Min. CD-R/CD-RW(various brands) flawlessly!! I cannot tell the difference between the SVCD and the original DVD! (However, my TV is a 35" Sony; not HDTV). It also played xsvcd, but the results emulated playing a poor VHS tape (jumpy frames). No problem on the xsvcd audio tho.

This DVD Player worked great for a short while. It played everything I burned for about a month. The first thing that went wrong is the buttons on the player stopped working. I could still control it with the remote, but nothing on the player itself worked. At the same time the display stopped working. Another week later it started locking up playing XSVCD's that used to play perfectly. Daewoo support is a Joke. I called them 5 times over a period of 3 weeks, each time I heard that I would be called back within 48 hours. The last time I called I was told it was being forwarded to a Manager. I NEVER got a call back. The player played nicely, but pray that it never goes bad.

This is by far the <bBEST</b> DVD player I have ever had the fortune of using. It has played everything i've tossed at it except one svcd, but that was the creators problem[it wont play in any dvd-player]. I have tried Blues, Golds, Greens, Silvers, Polka-Dotyed(ok well not really polka-dotted) cds and it hasn't rejected a single one.. it plays DVDs grand too, volume is a little low on them but i think that is the actual dvd itsself.. I love the fact that the console itsself has all the buttons on it, so i don't have to fumble for the remote at night. Over-all this is a superb player and is worth WELL over the 100$ it goes for.. If you can still find one, GET IT
